The physics of masks is very interesting. Masks filter out: πŸ“~100% of tiny particles (<0.1μm) through Brownian diffusion πŸ“~100% of the larger particles (>1.0μm) through interception πŸ“medium particles (~0.3μm) are trickier but an N95 mask will still filter out 95% of these.

This is another fantastic video from the same team which explains the genius physics behind how N95 masks work to protect you against even the tiniest fine particles. TLDR: They work more like magnets than like sieves.

DJ, see also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAdanPfQdCA or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAdanPfQdCA a 6 minutes video on N95 masks

Masks protect against CoViD, but also flu...other viral diseases in the air. In combination with glasses/eye-protection it will offer very good protection.

Of course one has to take hygiene also serious. If a virus gets on a surface and-via contact-in you than you still can get infected.

In poor area's UV-C desinfection may allow -maybe- reuse of some basic protection. One has to check the product instructions for that..A tear in the mask, bad fitting, could mean NO protection !

Also limiting time in high risk area's may be wise...Ventilation ALWAYS !!! It will lower the viral load !

I have to disagree. The vast majority of people are not wearing masks that are P95 or better, they are wearing cloth masks, either homemade or surgical. And almost everyone, regardless of whether they are wearing a P95 or a different type of mask are wearing the wrong size and even if they have the right size, they are not fitting them properly when putting them on.

I've seen the masks on sale since the start of Covid and i've only ever seen the one size fits all. Now I can tell that prior to Covid, N95s came in different sizes and i know this because we buy them for our business. I wear a different size mask from my husband. So the overwhelming majority are wearing ill fitting masks. And tiny particles are travelling in and out of the mask via the air gaps around the sides and on the bridge of the nose and around the chin.

And then we have the issue of the duration of effectiveness of mask and the protocol of putting them on and taking them off. It's over and above ridiculous. And don't get me started on medical / surgical masks.

I will say that the one advantage I can see on mask wearing is that it heightens the wearer's awareness of germ transfer, as it's an ever present reminder about air bourne infection.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

KiwiMum-I agree with some of your points;

-a mask has to fit...In the video N95 would offer 95% protection-not 100%- if it fits OK...a beard reduces protection a lot...Also shown in the video...

-N95 masks do better than more simple-often cheaper- ones...

- It has to be part of a strategy including ventilation, good hygiene, if possible eye-protection...

But even then it will never be 100% perfect !

However most HCW-ers in high risk care did NOT catch CoViD...so -nothing is perfect- but masks DO protect...but I agree with the nuances KM is making...

----------

Maybe my viewpoint; We did end up in a "fight over vaccines"...Lockdowns/curfews may also not be a first policy...That leaves (other) non-pharma interventions as a strategy...

Masks have to be part of that strategy...they were part during the Spanish Flu (1918 around) pandemic and masks have been in use for centuries...Even during the plague...

https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/breaking-news-study-finds-that-covid-19-triggered-exposure-of-carcinogenic-phthalates-to-many-via-masks-and-gloves or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/breaking-news-study-finds-that-covid-19-triggered-exposure-of-carcinogenic-phthalates-to-many-via-masks-and-gloves ...you need "high quality" protection....There have been reports that during the pandemic crisis used masks, gloves were sold to "the market"....

-The will to get another booster may be gone in many countries...

-Restrictions also may not be possible...

-So -my view- masks may be one of the few things left...YOU control where to use what...for YOUR protection...

I expect CoViD and flu to get problematic again...also ash from fires/bad air quality may need lung protection...(better get masks blocked by "dirt" than your lungs !)...

KM-or anyone else...if you know of a better alternative...please let me know ! (I am NOT an expert !)

I still see people here who wear masks. I was at an event a couple of weeks ago which was lots of women crammed into a small hall and everyone in close proximity to everyone else and there were 2 or 3 in masks. I doubt the masks gave them any protection but maybe it made them feel better.

The problem is that some people are much more vulnerable to illness than others and there is a limit to what they can do. Lock downs and mask mandates have shown us all that it's not practicable or realistic to lock up healthy people in a vain attempt to save frail people. Afterall, we've all got to die of something sometime.

Maybe the answer lies somewhere in the realms of each individual trying to make themselves as healthy as possible? Get fitter, lose weight. I would say give up smoking but the French paradox during Covid blows that idea out of the water. Plenty of smug people said that Covid would wipe out all the smokers but when the French government noticed that fewer smokers were dying than non smokers they did a study (that was then hushed up as it was generally felt that everyone should be encouraged to give up smoking and it was irresponsible to point out any benefits of smoking). The study showed that nicotine in cigarettes actually stopped the spike protein in Covid from binding to the lungs and smokers generally had a much milder Covid experience.

So who knows what the answer is?

https://exposetobacco.org/resource/smoking-covid-french-study/ or https://exposetobacco.org/resource/smoking-covid-french-study/ ;

On April 21, 2020, two encouraging studies were released. The linked French studies argued that smoking and nicotine can protect tobacco users from COVID-19 and serve as a treatment option for the novel disease.

However, these studies are problematic and deeply concerning because:

Media coverage has failed to identify the weaknesses of these studies, in some cases even prompting the panic-buying of nicotine. Studies such as these undermine the clear and consistent messaging on COVID-19 that is critical for public health and understanding.

Read more about how these smokescreen studies were conducted and why they can’t be trusted.

DJ, In general being in good shape may offer some protection...But it could even result in cytokine overreaction https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2020.01648/full or https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2020.01648/full

NOT catching the virus may be the best option !
