Hi FluMom, thank you for your advice. This is the first night I haven't had nightmares about it, so I hope that's a good sign. Still feeling kind of numb about it all though. I had to inform Sierra and mine's mutual friend in Japan about it last night so I hope she is coping well. Our Japanese friend has a 1 year old so I hope she isn't stressed out. She can't accept it either because Sierra was planning a trip to visit her next year in Kyoto :/. I am not sure if my school had grief counselors even though a student that graduated from my school was a fallen victim as well. If they did, it's probably only for students with school insurance and I didn't qualify for it.
Hi Techno, thanks for the response. Over here, the normal meaning is typically a ghost. One dictionary claims its a spy in North American English, but I wonder if they mean Canada. The derogatory meaning is pertaining to black/people of African descent. Kind of random huh? I don't think it's used all that much now though. As someone who studies language, I find it interesting to learn new meanings. |

I've read numerous spy novels, mostly set in Western Europe, that use that term as a spy. It's earliest use as a ghost that I am aware of was in the mid thirties Little Rascals episode where Buckwheat says "I saw a spook!" Which was hilarious and cute and innocent but somehow I think that scene is at the root of the modern American derogatory use.

I would like it if this subject could be split in two (or three) one dealing with grief, one with panic and "how to deal with terror" and a third one asking questions. Losing some you liked or loved is very bad and painfull it should not be mixed with speculations on "who did it" . I opened a new topic. This tread should be a place for memory of victims of terrorist-crime. |

That's actually really interesting. Didn't know the Little Rascals was that old. |

Update on the student services: My school just sent out a badly worded letter that sounded like they only wanted to support Muslim students (excerpt "We especially want to offer support to our Muslim community, who may need extra support at this time..even if you do not identify as Muslim, you may interact with students who are experiencing crisis.") For a school that also lost an alumna, you would think the services would include everyone; for instance, those of us who actually lost someone. I think the exclusion of most the student body isn't right, they really need to fix the wording. I bet they'll retract the letter later and make it more student body inclusive when someone comments on the wording.

Hachi, Sierra's family was on the Dr. Phil show that aired yesterday. It was heartbreaking, they are in so much pain.
Unfortunately I don't think the Dr. Phil show puts full episodes online anywhere, at least they didn't use to. If anyone finds it though could you post it here? |

Really? I didn't know they were on it. Hopefully the episode repeats. I remember that Sierra's sister's birthday was a couple of days after we learned the news and she had posted that she didn't want to celebrate her birthday, but her friends said Sierra would want her to be happy. I believe that as well.
