Yes we managed it !

France have made it to Sunday’s World Cup final while having to deal with all kinds of setbacks and adversities. The most recent concerns the players’ health. A number of players have gone down with a mysterious, debilitating virus, similar to the flu - the situation is understandably a cause for concern with the France camp. The two most affected players to date are Dayot Upamecano and Adrien Rabiot - neither of whom were well enough to play a single minute of Wednesday’s semi-final against MoroccoRabiot remained in isolation back at the team hotel. In Qatar there is concern about a virus dubbed Camel flu that is going around for the past couple of weeks. Many fans attending the World Cup, including those who have now returned home, have also come down with a nagging cold that they have struggled to shake off.

Camel flu is the common name for Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) - a viral respiratory disease caused by Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS‐CoV), a zoonotic virus which can be transmitted between animals and people with camels being the main link between the two. It was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and since then there have been 2,600 laboratory confirmed cases in humans, and at almost 1,000 deaths worldwide although 80% of cases of MERS‐CoV affecting humans have been confined to Saudi Arabia.

Human-to-human transmission of MERS‐CoV is possible and studies have indicated that there is also a risk of airborne transmission. Approximately 30-35% of the cases reported to the World Health Organisation during the past decade have died and there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment available to treat infected patients. Qatar is one of 27 countries that have reported cases to the WHO.

MERS‐CoV ‘Camel flu’ - what are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms include feversore throatdry cough and shortness of breath. Patients might also suffer gastrointestinal symptoms - abdominal painnausea or diarrhoea. Some severe cases have led to other complications such as pneumonia but that isn’t usually the case.

DJ;

At this time of year there are a number of nasty viruses doing the rounds, and while France coach Didier Deschamps and his medical staff will be concerned about his poorly players, it doesn’t mean they have contracted Camel flu. Deschamps did confirm that another player is showing early symptoms - Kingsley Coman. Coman also sat out the Morocco game. “Kingsley had a fever this morning. In Doha, the temperatures have dropped a bit and most people still have air conditioning on all the time. We have had a few cases of flu-like symptoms. We are trying to be careful so that it does not spread and the players have put in a great effort on the pitch and obviously their immune systems suffer,” the coach explained.

So no confirmation but also no sense of urgency...Are they that stupid !!!

Mass gatherings, such as sporting events and festivals, create ideal conditions for human-to-human transmission of a range of infectious diseases, which can rapidly spread globally due to ease of travel.
1 In Qatar two mass gathering events are being held simultaneously, the FIFA World Cup 2022 championship
2 and the Camel Mzayen Club's camel beauty pageant festival.
3 These have attracted hundreds of thousands of people from within the Middle East and across the world. Many are attending both events, interacting closely with each other and with camels, creating ideal conditions for the transmission of camel-associated zoonotic pathogens with epidemic potential.
4 These pathogens include the highly lethal MERS-CoV. Dromedary camels in the Middle East are a major reservoir of MERS-CoV. Humans sporadically become infected through direct or indirect contact with MERS-CoV-infected camels or camel dairy products.
5
MERS-CoV was first reported as a new human pathogen from Saudi Arabia in 2012.
6 MERS-COV is the most lethal of the three zoonotic coronaviruses (ie, MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2) that have caused human outbreaks.
7 As of Nov 1, 2022, 2600 people have been reported to have laboratory-confirmed Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), including 894 deaths (ie, a 34% case fatality rate), globally from 27 countries.
8Although the majority of infections have occurred in the Middle East, eight countries in Europe have also reported confirmed infections, all with travel links to the Arabian Peninsula. In May 2022, Qatar authorities reported to WHO two individuals with MERS, of whom one died.
9 Both had primary MERS-CoV infections, contact with camels, and had consumed raw camel milk. With MERS-CoV being endemic in camels in Qatar, the simultaneous hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022, and the camel beauty pageant, poses an enhanced risk of transmission and globalisation of MERS-CoV. ...

DJ...testing for respitory infections almost stopped...So if MERS-cases would be spreading/mixing we may find out very late...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MERS#Epidemiology or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MERS#Epidemiology

WTF?! Three French football players in the World Cup in Qatar contracted MERS-CoV, yet nobody is making a big deal about it. By calling it Camel Flu it may be hard to decipher which virus they contracted but the media is reporting it is MERS-CoV indeed.

DJ...and the winner-world cup for utter stupidity goes to ....

To put things in perspective...we have now over 1100 Omicron subvariants detected...no doubt lots more undetected yet...https://outbreak.info/situation-reports or https://outbreak.info/situation-reports ...lots of mutations result in (more) immunity evasion...(so vaccines, earlier infections offer less protection...) ...Also decrease of immunity is -by now- worse then MERS, MERS recombinants spreading...

DJ- I am NOT an expert...but "exponential excess deathsscenario on its way ?

Although the specific virus affecting the France camp is as yet unclear, many visitors to Qatar have struggled with Middle East respiratory syndrome, which can cause a flu-like illness ranging in severity.

"In Doha, temperatures have fallen a little bit, you have air conditioning which is on all the time," said Deschamps.

"We've had a few cases of flu-like symptoms. We are trying to be careful so it doesn't spread and players have made great efforts out on the pitch and obviously their immune systems suffer.

DJ december 13 article https://www.coronaheadsup.com/health/mers/recombination-potential-between-sars-cov-2-and-mers-cov/ or https://www.coronaheadsup.com/health/mers/recombination-potential-between-sars-cov-2-and-mers-cov/ ;

A June 2021 preprint looking at the potential for a MERS-CoV/SARS-CoV-2 recombination event is receiving a lot of social media attention today following rumours of MERS-CoV/SARS-CoV-2 infections at the World Cup in Qatar.  There doesn’t seem to be any evidence from the reports we have seen that a MERS/SARS-CoV-2 recombinant event has actually happened, however.

Several tabloid newspapers across the globe are referring to a briefing note sent out by the UKHSA recently about the possibility of World Cup fans bringing MERS infections back from Qatar, but the document doesn’t seem to be available publicly. This NDTV report carries the information from the UKHSA that has been republished by many other newspapers.

On the 2nd December, the Australian Health Department issued a warning about possible MERS infections for fans attending the World Cup

Replying to
ESPN article says the virus causing illness in French players is unknown so far.

Lol. Really? Someone thought it's smart to organize CAMEL BEAUTY PAGEANT & the World Cup simultaneously?!

MERS!!!! That's nasty. I'm as surprised as you that this isn't getting more coverage. Well spotted Josh.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

With fewer than 24 hours left until the beginning of the end of the action in Qatar, there are fears for France as Raphaël Varane and Ibrahima Konaté are the latest players to fall ill. Meanwhile, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino hailed the tournament as “the best World Cup ever”, and we discuss whether the mental health of players is being properly considered by football authorities.

DJ...did the (by now 5 ?) players get CoViD-tests ? (PCR ? )....One would expect some sort of testing...maybe inconclusive...? So no CoViD or flu came out of the test ? But does a test for MERS take longer-need sequencing ?

A type of coronavirus known as NeoCov has been making headlines around the world, with some comparing it to the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19. But that comparison is not really accurate, and this is certainly not a new variant.

The NeoCov virus is the closest known genetic relative to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, leading to comparisons with the latter’s fatality rate of one in three infected people – but there is no risk to humans from NeoCov yet.

The NeoCov virus was first identified in 2011 and found to infect a species of bats known as Neoromicia, which are mostly found in parts of Africa. NeoCov is not known to infect humans. However, scientists in China who have been studying it caused widespread panic when they suggested NeoCov may have the potential to infect humans in the future.

3 soccer players infected with MERS in Qatar

3 French soccer players infected …

…Mustafa revealed that infection with the virus was observed among a number of fans of the teams at the current World Cup in Qatar, and the last of which was the infection of three players from the French national team only 48 hours before the final match scheduled for Sunday against the Argentine national team….

No official confirmations about this news

There seems to be more to the MERS concerns with a camel pageant happening at the same time. Article in the Lancet gives warning. The Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 and camel pageant championships increase risk of MERS-CoV transmission and global spread

so...maybe the Qatar football event first has to finish (this evening) before they "bring the news"..."no doubt mild camel-flu"...not MERS or some recombination...

Saudi scientists have reported that eight ICU patients with a SARS-CoV-2 and MERS coinfection were detected in 2020. Four of the patients were discharged home and three died.

During the study period from March 14, 2020 to October 19, 2020, there was a total of 67 SARS-CoV-2 ICU admitted patients who underwent simultaneous SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV testing by PCR. Of those patients, 8 (12%) tested positive for both SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV.

There were 6 (75%) males, the mean age ± SD was 44.4 ± 11.8 years, and 7 (87.5%) were obese. Of the patients, 7 (87.5%) were non-smokers, 1 (12.5%) had diabetes mellitus, 1 (12.5%) had heart failure, and 1 (12.5%) had been on anti-platelet therapy. The mean hospital length of stay (LOS) was 21.1 ± 11.6 days and the average ICU LOS was 10.9 ± 6.03 days.

All patients received supportive therapy and all were treated with corticosteroid. Of all the patients, 4 (50%) were discharged home and 3 (37.5%) died.

Research: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) coinfection

DJ...so 8 CoViD-MERS co-infections were studied almost three years ago and it now becomes news ? It looks like that...tested for CoViD AND MERS !!!! Between march and october 2020 !

How much more co-infections will there have been ? Did it result in "SARS-2/CoViD-19" picking up segments of MERS-rna ?  Why the silence ?
