Rapture,

Calm down. I think N. Korea is smart enough to know that if it launched a nucular warhead at anyone, and actually HIT something, that the world reaction would be swift and through and North Korea would probably cease to exist. Even they are not THAT stupid. Lets face it, they only have ONE! Nato allies have Thousands.

Sunday US time or Sunday NK time?
I hope they don't otherwise going by other scenarios Dubya might invade  Bangia Desh, Mongolia or the Maldives.

Calm down, I doubt it is a nuclear weapon and it probably won't hit anything. Interesting news though. I can't believe they are stupid enough to launch that thing. If hits the U.S. they will be in big trouble.

IF they did fire the missile, and IF it did manage to hit the U.S., I wonder where it would hit?  The west coast since it's the closest?  Or?  What kind of range does the missile have?

Surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to fire it, but ... Confused

This Sunday (as in, tomorrow), or NEXT Sunday?

My best friend and I have been preparing for the BF.  At first she was doubtful, but came around as I shared news stories.  Her husband is a differnet story.  He always throws a fit when she buys something, and thinks we are nuts.
He works at the Air Force base near me for over 20 years. He works the computers and radar systems.  He called me today and told me to get whatever I needed NOW.  His commanding officer told them that North Korea has placed their missle on the launch pad and are firing it Sunday.  He was told that 4 of our fleets have been deployed and that NORAD is on high alert.

Now, I am not a news sorce or an expert, but I have known him for 20 years and for him to worry is something.

I realize this a BF forum...but I would feel really bad if I didn't say anything about this.  I apologize now if someone is upset by this.

I am going to get everything on my last minute list NOW,do as you see fit.

May God be with us all.

Okay....now, hold on, hold on.  NK is not going to be shooting off any nuclear rocket at the U.S.  What has been in the news for quite a while now is the fact that NK wants to test a rocket that would have intercontinental/nuclear warhead CAPABILITY.  It's a TEST...TEST...TEST.

AND, the U.S. for the past week has been saying that if NK goes ahead with its TEST rocket, that the U.S. would keep an option on the table of shooting the TEST rocket either while it is still on the launchpad or after it has been launched.

NK in the past shot a TEST rocket all the way across Japan that landed in the ocean on the other side of Japan....and all of us are still here.  The world did not end.  And, if NK goes ahead with its test, either the U.S. is just gonna sit there and watch or it will shoot the bajebbies out of it as aforementioned.

So, let's just calm down.

The only thing worse than a brutal lie is the brutal truth. (M Twain) I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit; He set my feet on a rock. Psalm40

My son did a year in the DMZ in Korea.  He said the North absolutely detests the US.  They've been fed propoganda for 50 years.  But they don't have the mentality to try a First Strike.
Iran is a different story.  Look for an Israeli attack on the Iranian Uranium Enrichment  facility outside of Natanz before the end of the year.   It will be 1981 all over again, but  this time Nostradamus predicted this one.

I have been keeping my eye on this since it hit the news. The one thing that I heard on fox news cable channel today that it was pointed at the united states. I'm not really sure that they can get that info. I dought poly ding dang, or what ever that nut heads name is would  really do it  right now. It's already pissing off many countries. He is just posturing because of the situation that we are having with Iran.  Now where they have it pointing, Who knows, I did not hear any official state where it was pointing, just the news person. But if your friend in the air force is concerned  it makes me concerned. Please keep us informed about his feelings on the situation. But lets all be cool and relax, there really isen't anything we could do. Between BF and NK we will drive ourselves crazy.  EVERYBODY TAKE A DEEP BREATH...NOW EXHALE..ok yea that don't work. But lets do it anyway....

I agree. They, North Korea, has been saying they are going to test a missle. I don't remember hearing anything about a nuclear warhead being attached to it. Bush has been telling them they better not...or else! My understanding was that they are going to do a test launch. If it is more dire than that it's gonna screw up my day. I planned on picking strawberries & raspberries early tomorrow morning.

Mines as well sleep in!

thanks for giving your info RR.

I hope it's a bluff.  We have been dealing with N/ Korea's threats for a long time... the Mouse That Roared.

Anyway.  Here is something I posted yesterday.

Not sure if anyone read it?  See the date... 1994.

something to read... about this time in 1994

U.S. Policy Approaches And Options

Option 1: Wait out North Korea on the assumption that the
regime will not survive long enough to seriously threaten
U.S. or allied interests with its nuclear capability

Option 2: Seek a "comprehensive settlement" of Korean
        peninsula issues, primarily through diplomacy

Option 3: Seek economic sanctions under the United Nations
        Security Council

Option 4: Military augmentation

Option 5: Counterproliferation strikes against North Korea's
        nuclear installations

Option 6: Negotiated reduction of the U.S. military presence
        in South Korea

I have been reading bits and pieces about this threat all week.
Supposedly it has a range of over 9,000 miles. Don't know which direction it is pointed, but needless to say it would have to fly over populated areas any way they have positioned it.

I also read that we don't believe that they have a nuclear war head that is light enough to be put on this rocket. It could, however, be a hydrogen weapon.

There are also rumors that it may just be a satelite.

There have been tests of our missle protection program and the decision to shoot it down has been made.

So... As I told my co-worker earlier this week, we may be using our BF preps for something else, but at least we are ready.

Seems like this thread is going over the edge. Maybe Truckers are finishing up their runs so they can be home for the upcomming holiday weekend? Most people dont read the paper or watch the news. I cant believe all these truckers are so well informed, and nervous that they are going to drop their loads, loose their jobs and get home to hunker down because of One, repeat, ONE missile that may or may not have a payload. This forum is probably the best informed group in the country, but sometimes simple things get badly misinterpreted and overblown.

Every TV clip I see on the box shows a long skinny missile being launched.

In my experience ICBM capable missiles are all short and fat.  More space for fuel and warheads.

I have been following the nk situation for a while. yes, it is posturing. but it posturing with a purpose. everytime nk rattles it's swords, usa quietly offers them "incintives" to be quiet. this is just another attempt by kim jung il to get more of these incintives. also, it is a test. it is not loaded with anything. however, it does have the capacity to reach alaska and the extreme northwest continental usa. russia is ***sed. japan is in an uproar, america plans to shoot it down. and the rest of the world is watching.

I just found this on MSNBC's website...

N. Korea leader may have left for Russia

Leading South Korean newspaper reports Kim Jong Il departed via train

Updated: 11:15 p.m. ET June 22, 2006

SEOUL, South Korea - A leading South Korean newspaper reported Friday on the possibility North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has traveled to Russia via train, citing eyewitness reports.

The eyewitnesses told a person they had seen a VIP train, the form of transport preferred by Kim, crossing the border bound for Russia, the Chosun Ilbo daily reported.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry said it had no information and was checking into the report of a possible trip.

Kim shuns travel by air and has headed before to Russia via train, the last time in August 2002.

The North Korean leader rarely leaves his home country, and was last abroad during a trip to China in January.

Worst case scenerio...your ready. Best case, you got a great simulation in and will be that much more ready for a future situation.

You were right to post. It would be worse if you hadn't and something did happen. I hope you continue to post all your concerns. Regardless of how small or large they are. Someone told me size was relative?? Oh...that was my husband!

Just kidding, of course! Thanks goodness he doesn't visit the forum, and see that I use him for an occassional laugh..or does he???

Japan, as far as I recall, had no real reason (and lots of reason not to) bomb Pearl Harbor. Bombing Pearl Harbor made no sense -- it just ***sed off the US and gave them another enemy with tons of resources. Up until that point, we'd been staying out of the war.

But they bombed us anyway.

My point is, war isn't always logical.

Shooting a missile at the US makes no logistic sense from North Korea -- they can't win, unless they count global annihilation as "winning." But they hate us, and their leader's a true madman who is NOT well grounded in reality.

He may think that because we're preoccupied by Iraq and Afghanistan we can't fight another war. Note that this man has those who oppose him executed or sent to concentration camps. I can easily see a scenario where Jung Il asks his "advisors" -- "Is the US weakened by the wars in the middle east enough that we could win a fight with them?"

-- and his advisors, not wishing to be shot for disagreeing with the great leader, nod and say, "Yessir. We can beat our enemies. Lets start by taking DC out ..."

Plus Jung Il has made it clear he thinks we're going to invade him. If he thinks we're going to invade him anyway, he may figure getting the first strike in and making it count may be the best move. If we strike HIM first, well, he's seen what we did to Iraq and Afghanistan ...

If they have a bomb, it's likely to be a small nuke akin to what we hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki with. Small as such things go, not particularly technologically advanced, but rather reliable and easy enough to make. They have the technology to make it; most of their GNP goes towards their war machine. We know they have enriched uranium from their nuclear power plants and making a basic nuke from it isn't actually that difficult and could be counted on to work, from what I understand, without being tested.

(They couldn't test it first. North Korea may well cease to exist via a swat from the Chinese if they did. China's downwind and would be unamused. Plus it would tip their hand -- and if they have a limited amount of uranium, would waste it. They'd probably rather test it on their enemies ...)

Making it small enough to fit on a ballistic missile ... I wouldn't want to assume they couldn't. We could by the 60's. They're at least at that level of technology.

If they DO lob a nuke our way, my bet is that they explode it in the atmosphere rather than on the ground over a densely populated area -- DC, New York, LA. This would take less aiming and be a more efficient use of a single nuke than trying to hit a specific target. They could be off by 100 miles in the DC area and still make a big impression.

The resulting electromagnetic pulse would be a very bad thing, would disable any unhardened electronic device within several hundred miles and take down the grid.

I'm not sure how bad the radiation would be from an airburst ... anyone know? I suspect not "as" bad as a nuke exploded on the ground as there would be less fallout.

Korea worries the hell out of my simply bcause Kim Jung Il is a loose cannon. He's an unpredictable madman who's demonstrated his lack of care for human life and his cunning on many occasions. You know, the reason we haven't attacked him in the past is that he's got Seoul (South Korea -- several million people) held hostage. There's a dam in North Korea that he's got wired with explosives; if we attack him, he's indicated he'll blow the dam and kill a few million people in Seoul.

Interesting times. I fueled my truck up today on the off chance that, if we do get hit, and the grid goes down, and I have a driveable truck afterwards, I can bug out to the high country. Otherwise, I think I have all the preps I need.

Here's a good site to keep up with the newest news concerning North Korea.

http://www.newsnow.co.uk/newsfeed/?name=North+Korea

This is a good article from USA Today:

Also, regarding size -- by the late 1950's, the US had a nuke small enough to picked up and carried by a soldier onto a battlefield and launched by a small rocket at opposing troops -- the idea was to contaminate the battlefield with short-lived radiation to prevent enemy advance, and kill any enemies within a few thousand feet in the process.

If we could develop a nuke that small using slide rules and 50's era technology, I'm sure the Koreans could do do the same. They do have computers and quite a bit of information about how to make things work can be inferred from the internet from non-classified publically available info.

Long range missiles are passe and stupid:   They leave a signature of where they were launched from.

Suitcase WMD's are in:  They are portable, untraceable, "low tech" (compared to technology required to have a missile hit its target), and easy to cross borders with.

The required size of a nuclear weapon capable of destroying pretty much everything in a 1/2 mile diameter is the size of a softball.  Weighs about 18-20 lbs.

Why does NK need a missile anyway? It's so much easier to load a warhead onto a ship and sail it right into port....   Less fiddling with finicky guidance mechanisms and whatnot.

This is a deal made between NK and the US Air Force to do a "live" simulation of the Star Wars defense system, which has never even worked on drone missles with known trajectories, much less a "real" attack. This way, the Air Force gets a free pass to further test a system that is a black hole into which the citizens have been pouring good money after bad for years.
If all is not lost, where is it?

A cunning plan indeed, redcloud!

But perhaps their intention is to distract us from ....from......from that... that thing we were worrying about before.....what was it?

Oh, yes, bird flu!

Thanks Rapt.Ready.  Do not be discouraged, i hope that no one would keep any news from the forum that could be important.  This is the place to share info. even if you can't substant. we should look at the history of indiv. posts, I have read your posts and think this is worth some attention.  I do agree links and proof are important but we also have to consider the fact some things are not going to be proovable.   God bless and keep us updated on any future info he gets . Hope your friend receives a little more support now from her husband in regards to prepping-can come in handy with any disaster!!
Speculative question, could this be a way to get us prepared for a disaster, without any government self blame for not preparing us more for things like ooh say bf. We could instead blame NK for the threat, I dont mean that its some conspir by our gov.  Maybe it is a coincid. that would work to our favor, being on high alert and preparing.  Sorry if my post sounds confusing..Confused
