DJ,

I do not know what to think of this story; https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/breaking-measles-virus-spreading-in-zimbabwe-and-afghanistan-that-is-causing-deaths-in-children-is-a-new-genotype-never-identified-before or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/breaking-measles-virus-spreading-in-zimbabwe-and-afghanistan-that-is-causing-deaths-in-children-is-a-new-genotype-never-identified-before Claim is a "new kind of measles" is spreading (since may) in parts of Africa and West Asia giving also a lot of brain damage...killing already hundreds of children...limited spread in adults...Very likely to spread further...

More Than 150 Children Dead in Zimbabwe Measles Outbreak
August 16, 2022 4:57 PM
Agence France-Presse

A measles outbreak in Zimbabwe has killed at least 157 children, with more than 2,000 infections reported across the country, the government said Tuesday.

Cases have been growing rapidly in the southern African nation since authorities said the first infection was logged earlier this month, with reported deaths almost doubling in less than a week.

"As of 15 August, the cumulative figure across the country has risen to 2,056 cases and 157 deaths," Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said, briefing journalists after a weekly Cabinet meeting...

 The global focus now is at MPX......I put this also in latest news...from "pandemic breakfast"...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Measles or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Measles ;

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by measles virus.[11][3][12] Symptoms usually develop 10–12 days after exposure to an infected person and last 7–10 days.[7][8] Initial symptoms typically include fever, often greater than 40 °C (104 °F), cough, runny nose, and inflamed eyes.[3][4] Small white spots known as Koplik's spots may form inside the mouth two or three days after the start of symptoms.[4] A red, flat rash which usually starts on the face and then spreads to the rest of the body typically begins three to five days after the start of symptoms.[4] Common complications include diarrhea (in 8% of cases), middle ear infection (7%), and pneumonia (6%).[5] These occur in part due to measles-induced immunosuppression.[6] Less commonly seizuresblindness, or inflammation of the brain may occur.[5][7] Other names include morbillirubeolared measles, and English measles.[1][2] Both rubella, also known as German measles, and roseola are different diseases caused by unrelated viruses.[13]

Measles is an airborne disease which spreads easily from one person to the next through the coughs and sneezes of infected people.[7] It may also be spread through direct contact with mouth or nasal secretions.[14] It is extremely contagious: nine out of ten people who are not immune and share living space with an infected person will be infected.[5] Furthermore, measles's reproductive number estimates vary beyond the frequently cited range of 12 to 18.[15] The NIH quote this 2017 paper saying: "[a] review in 2017 identified feasible measles R0 values of 3.7–203.3".[16] People are infectious to others from four days before to four days after the start of the rash.[5] While often regarded as a childhood illness, it can affect people of any age.[17] Most people do not get the disease more than once.[7] Testing for the measles virus in suspected cases is important for public health efforts.[5] Measles is not known to occur in other animals.[14]

Once a person has become infected, no specific treatment is available,[14] although supportive care may improve outcomes.[7] Such care may include oral rehydration solution (slightly sweet and salty fluids), healthy food, and medications to control the fever.[7][8] Antibiotics should be prescribed if secondary bacterial infections such as ear infections or pneumonia occur.[7][14] Vitamin A supplementation is also recommended for children.[14] Among cases reported in the U.S. between 1985 and 1992, death occurred in only 0.2% of cases,[5] but may be up to 10% in people with malnutrition.[7] Most of those who die from the infection are less than five years old.[14]

The measles vaccine is effective at preventing the disease, is exceptionally safe, and is often delivered in combination with other vaccines.[7][18] Vaccination resulted in an 80% decrease in deaths from measles between 2000 and 2017, with about 85% of children worldwide having received their first dose as of 2017.[14] Measles affects about 20 million people a year,[3] primarily in the developing areas of Africa and Asia.[7] It is one of the leading vaccine-preventable disease causes of death.[19][20] In 1980, 2.6 million people died from measles,[7] and in 1990, 545,000 died due to the disease; by 2014, global vaccination programs had reduced the number of deaths from measles to 73,000.[21][22] Despite these trends, rates of disease and deaths increased from 2017 to 2019 due to a decrease in immunization.

DJ...No info on the recent outbreak in Africa/Asia on wiki...

https://www.newzimbabwe.com/measles-outbreak-death-toll-now-150-children-as-cases-reach-2000/ or https://www.newzimbabwe.com/measles-outbreak-death-toll-now-150-children-as-cases-reach-2000/ ;

HARARE: An outbreak of measles in Zimbabwe has killed at least 157 children with the death toll nearly doubling in just under a week, the government said on Tuesday.

The total number of suspected cases across the country has risen from 1,036 to 2,056 in the space of just four days, the information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said. The health ministry earlier blamed gatherings of religious sects for the outbreak.

The first infection was logged earlier this month. Most reported cases involve children between the ages of six months and 15 years from religious sects who do not believe in vaccination.

“It has been noted that most cases have not received vaccination to protect against measles. Government has invoked the Civil Protection Unit Act to deal with this emergency,” Mutsvangwa said.

Zimbabwe to step up vaccinations

According to Mutsvangwa, the Zimbabwean government was looking to work with traditional and religious leaders to gain their support for the vaccination campaign.

She also said the government would step up vaccinations and cited special legislation allowing it to draw money from the national disaster fund “to deal with the emergency.”

The measles virus mainly affects children with some of the more serious complications including blindness, brain swelling, diarrhea and severe respiratory infections. Once very common, the virus can now be prevented with a vaccine.

DJ...so maybe measles vaccination may be effective to slow down spread ? With major risks in groups that do not want vaccinations ? (For whatever reasons...DJ-it is their body...if people do not want to get a vaccine no government has any right to enforce a vaccine...however not getting a vaccine may bring other limits-my opinion).

Of course MPX, CoViD, Polio...one has to find strategies to deal with these diseases in a combination of risks...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

The Zimbabwe government has invoked the Civil Protection Unit Act to deal with the measles outbreak that has so far claimed 157 lives from complications after spreading across the country.

“The nation is being informed that following a report of the first case of measles in Mutasa District, Manicaland Province on 10th August 2022, the disease has now spread to other Provinces.

“As of 15th August 2022, the cumulative figures from across the country had risen to 2 056 cases, and 157 deaths,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

Manicaland has recorded the highest number of cases and deaths with 1270 cases and 122 deaths, Harare 121 cases and 0 deaths, Midlands 83 cases and 16 deaths, Masvingo 116 cases and three deaths, Mashonaland East 115 cases and 16 deaths. Mashonaland Central 87 cases and 0 deaths, Mashonaland West 130 cases and 0 deaths Matabeleland North 85 and 0 deaths, Matabeleland South 23 cases and 0 deaths and Bulawayo 12 cases and 0 deaths.

Most cases reported among children within the targeted age group for vaccination are from religious sects who are not vaccinated against measles due to religious beliefs.

He said measles is a highly contagious respiratory tract viral infection commonly found in children and is spread through sneezing, coughing and by touching or contact with secretions of an affected individual. Symptoms start with a cough, fever, and then skin rash, the high fever usually begins about 10 to 12 days after exposure to the virus and lasts four to seven days.

Dr Chimedza said other symptoms include a runny nose, a cough, red and watery eyes, and small white spots inside the cheeks can develop in the initial stage, after several days, a rash erupts on the face and spreads to the whole body.

“The public is advised that the risk of developing a severe form of measles or dying from complications of measles is very high among unvaccinated children under 15 years.

“Additionally, we are instituting a mass vaccination campaign targeting the six months to 15 years’ age groups regardless of their vaccination status,” said Dr Chimedza.

DJ; No doubt more will follow...both in news and cases...no doubt also in Europe, US etc...
