New MERS case surfaces in Republic of Korea

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Sunday that a new case of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has been found in the Republic of Korea (South Korea).

Across the country, there have been 186 cases of MERS-CoV during this outbreak, 36 of which have resulted in fatalities.

The International Health Regulations Focal Point for the country has provided additional information on this case, a 35-year-old patient who was admitted into a hospital with a fever and a positive MERS result on Oct. 11.

The patient was previously hospitalized for this condition after testing positive for the virus in June 2015. The patient was discharged Oct. 3 after two negative test results.

The WHO recommends that member states continue surveillance of respiratory infections and that they report any unusual patterns. They do not recommend that special procedures be established at points of entry or restrictions on trade and travel.

Those with compromised immune systems and those with chronic lung disease, renal failure and diabetes are thought to be at higher risk of contracting the illness.

MERS symptoms include fever, shortness of breath and coughing. Severe complications, including kidney failure and pneumonia, have been reported. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preparedness states that approximately three to four out of every 10 cases result in fatalities.
