WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Protein Sciences said Thursday it has developed a commercially viable cell-based method for producing influenza vaccines against potential pandemic strains, such as the deadly bird flu, that takes only weeks instead of the several months required for traditional egg-based vaccines. However, some experts cautioned that the new treatment could be years away from approval. The vaccine, known as FluBlok, has received accelerated approval status from the Food and Drug Administration and the company said it anticipates having the product on the market by the Fall or 2007 at the latest. 'FluBlok is going to revolutionize the vaccine field and we can`t wait to get it approved,' Dan Adams, Protein Sciences` president and chief executive officer, told United Press International. 'We could shortly be on the market with this product,' Adams said. 'We`re shooting for this Fall, but we`re pretty comfortable with 2007.' |

Sorry guys, but all this vaccine news is, IMHO, Happy Talk.
Any press releases by public companies are suspect, because they serve to increase the value of their stock. If a new, revolutionary vaccine fails to live up to expectations, stockholders will have made a killing in the run-up. It's to their advantage to hype any research. Governments are loath to admit there's no vaccine, and are happy to see these `hopeful' reports. And every research center with a virologist, a petri dish, and a dream see the federal funding for research as a gold mine. While one of these projects may bear fruit, the odds are, it won't happen until a pandemic is well underway. Developing a vaccine is only part of the problem. You have to produce it in quantity. You have to distribute it. And you have to, in the midst of a pandemic, innoculate literally Billions of people. We learned a lot of lessons in 1976, about the difficulties of vaccinating the entire country before a pandemic. With a full court press, we managed to vaccinate 40 million people in 10 weeks. Imagine trying to coordinate the innoculation of the citizenry of the United States, and the rest of the world, during a pandemic. Assuming that people will come out of their homes and queue up for hours for a shot (while exposing themselves to possibly infected individuals), how do you keep it from being a madhouse? Millions will show up the first day, and be turned away. Told to come back another day. The logistics of innoculating the world are staggaring. The protective qualities of most vaccines take 2 weeks to develop. How many will get sick from this exposure? And we won't know how safe or effective any vaccine will be based on small clinical trials. The military, law enforcement, and medical workers might be vaccinated. But the general population? I don't see that happening until the pandemic is nearly over. I'm willing to be proven wrong here, but right now, I'm not buying it. Just my 2 cents. |

Yes you are right on your assessment, it will be some time before any vaccine is ready for jo-blo public. we will be on our own if this thing takes off in near future. It is refreshing to see some progress being made though. |

Even if they could only vaccinate all health-care workers, it would be something.
