In New Zealand, health authorities have reported no new virus cases for a week. Of the 1,504 people who were infected, 22 have died but all but one have now recovered. The nation’s borders remain closed, and staying virus-free when they reopen poses a big challenge. https://worldabcnews.com/new-zealand-nears-coronavirus-eradication-but-virus-has-grim-global-hold/ |

We have one active case left and no one in hospital. In total we've had 1504 cases and 22 deaths. Our excellent prime minister Jacinda Ardern, has said that we will keep our borders closed for the time being. We allow Kiwis to come home but no one else without special exemption. I believe that they are currently considering applications from various film production teams from America who want to come and resume filming here. (NZ has a huge film industry). There are halfway through the new Avatar film at the moment. Also the Americas Cup teams want to come here with their families for the next year. NZ is considering expanding our bubble to include Australia so that we can holiday in each other's countries, but until Australia manages to eliminate the virus, that won't be happening. The minister of tourism in Australia said yesterday that the Trans Tasman corridor would reopen on July 1st, but our PM said she might consider it in September but only after Australia eliminate the virus. Our tourism industry is dead in the water at the moment as far as international travellers is concerned, but Kiwis are great travellers so we're all going on holiday in NZ instead. It's a tricky one, but life here is almost back to normal. I think the success we've had has come because of 2 factors, one, we are geographically isolated so you can't sneak in here, and two, the Kiwi people are quite harmonious and content and so when we were asked to, we all pulled together in "our team of 5 million" and worked towards a shared goal. I'm not sure if many other countries have those 2 factors to draw upon. |

Being both isolated and sparsely populated probably helped, but the main reason you did so well is your leader. "Do as I do, care for each other, do without - to do the right thing. See, we will do it with you." ...and the people followed. Over here: Do what I say, ignore us breaking the rules before you!" ..and the people all cheated the system too. Only The Americas have done worse. Trump, Bolsanaro etc.. The less said about their approaches the better. If there could be a vote for a world leader, Ardern would have mine, I would canvass, campaign and intern for her too. She is a national treasure, more than your jade or gold deposits. |

We all love Jacinda. I'm definitely voting for her in the elections in September. I've just been reading about the Dominic Cummings fiasco in the UK. Honestly you couldn't make it up. It was even featured on the BBC political satire podcast The News Quiz this morning. Why can't the people who make the rules simply obey them? It's a case of do as I say, not as I do. |

Yep! It's embarrasing. Cummings is only the most recent in a long line. (Fergusson and Scotland's chief covid advisor among the list) We have 2000 KNOWN cases a day, but so little testing (STILL!) that there are probably around 8000. Yet we are opening up! The much vaunted Nightingale 1000 bed covid Hospital, built to handle the London excess, to stop the NHS cracking uinder the strain, has had 17 patients. Not because the NHS was unscathed or it was not needed, but because it had no staff. All the while people with reduced chances (but not none!) were taken off of ventilators to make room for the next wave of the desperate dying. I know what our government is trying to do. LOOK GOOD. "Hey! Our NHS survived!" But we have the world's second highest death rate and third highest if you go per/capita. Despite the chancellor of the exchequor, Rishi Sunak - who has been wonderful, I will NEVER vote Tory again. If our opposition is still full of commies, I will vote for the monster raving loony party! |

BTW, is NZ mutton dirt cheap now for those of you there, or have they found ways to keep its export going? I guess we will be living through "interesting times" as food supply chains adapt (and contract) to the new normal. |

Well... it is now reported that the "witness" who saw Cummings make a second trip now admits that he made the whole thing up....as a joke apparently. another who went to the police about Mr Cummings' activities is now found to be breaking the lock down rules themselves. a third 'witness' is an anti-brexit peer out to cause trouble I'd conclude that that the whole row is being generated and magnified by those who wish to kebab the government: in short it has nothing to do with CV19 and everything to do with politics and an anti-brexit witchhunt with the likely culprits being. 1. The opposite parties 2. The EU - to make the Brexit negotiations impossible however the row and their failure to remove Cummings has sent a valuable lesson to Europe and the EU that the UK government is not going to be pushed around. anyway do you REALLY think we have all being obeying the lock down rules since day 1? what planet are you on. might as well ask if we all obey the UK speed limits all the time. |

I am a Brexiteer. I voted for Boris - Sorry! Cummings ADMITTED the trip to Barnard castle. The joke was about a game based on the trip. 'And almost all New Zealanders did follow the lockdown. Why them and not us? We got told while they were led! |

It's interesting ,watching the psychology of different countries..... I watched a TV a series , It put groups of tourtists, from different countries is a castle ,things went wrong, each tour group got the same faults, in rooms, service, running out of things, power cuts, etc, It was really interesting to how each different nation coped, with problems, They didn't know it was a set up.... All the Brit's did was get drunk...LMAO http://www.windfallfilms.com/show/1178/The-Tourist-Trap.aspx |

I haven't noticed the price of lamb falling but to be honest I have 4 freezers full of meat so I wasn't looking. I know that all the cold storage at all the ports was full some time ago. NZ produces 20 times more food than we eat, so the vast majority goes to export. That is predominantly meat, dairy and fruit. I've read about other countries stopping their exports to preserve food for their own people, but not here. Since we're almost free of the disease, we're in full on production as usual. Hopefully they'll be a market for it all. Whilst we have very few planes coming and going these days, we still have lots of ships. I'm hoping our export markets will flourish. On a brighter note, because we have no overseas tourists here at the moment, the tourism industry are all offering special deals to Kiwis this weekend - it's a long weekend for the Queen's birthday, and some fancy hotels are allowing us to pay what we can afford, and campervans are $22 a day!!! And the weather down here in the South Island is gorgeous. |

A small step to open up in NZ (at least in an area that should bring strong economic benefit).
