DH closely monitors nine additional MERS cases in Saudi Arabia

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Department of Health (DH) is today (February 4) closely monitoring nine additional cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) (including four deaths) reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and hence called on the public to stay alert and maintain good personal, food and environmental hygiene during travel.

According to the WHO, the cases are:

* A female patient aged 84 with underlying illnesses but no exposure to risk factors during the incubation period. She was discharged upon recovery;
* A male patient aged 77 with underlying illnesses but no exposure to risk factors during the incubation period. He was discharged upon recovery;
* A male patient aged 80 with underlying illnesses who was in an emergency room where two previously confirmed patients had been treated but with no direct contact with either case.

He passed away earlier;
* A male patient aged 38 with underlying illnesses who underwent surgery in a hospital where a previously confirmed patient has been treated but with no contact;
* A male patient aged 76 with underlying illnesses who received care in a hospital where a previously confirmed patient had been treated. He passed away earlier;
* A male patient aged 67 with underlying illnesses who frequently visited a health-care facility not associated with previously confirmed patients and with no contact with respiratory patients;
* A male patient aged 62 with underlying illnesses but no exposure to risk factors during the incubation period;
* A male patient aged 67 with underlying illnesses who lived in an area with heavy presence of camels with no direct contact with camels or consumption of camel products. He passed away earlier; and
* A male patient aged 93 with underlying illnesses who was admitted to a hospital where a previously confirmed patient has been treated.

He passed away earlier.

In addition, two previously confirmed patients died.

To date, 965 laboratory-confirmed MERS cases have been reported to the WHO globally, including at least 357 deaths.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the DH is seeking more information on the cases from the WHO and the relevant health authority. The CHP will remain vigilant and work closely with the WHO as well as overseas and neighbouring health authorities to monitor the latest developments.
