I’ve scrolled back through the pages,to the first mention of this”new virus” in Wuhan and reread many posts,we were all searching for info, throwing out ideas and stories that most in time proved to be inaccurate, but we kept going and learning as we went.At that time the sickness and deaths seemed distant, not touching any of us yet,it was abstract, detached. We all weathered the waves as best we could, some losing friends or family or contracting it ourselves. We held Dr’s,nurses, scientist in high regard, they were and still are our “Florence Nightingales” though it would be hard to prove that today. They delivered vaccines that are effective, but I would say they presented them not with the best messaging. They should have said “they are on the whole very effective, but as we know season flu shots are not 100%, you can still get sick but not as severely, this holds true for the covid vaccines”That was the error. Also now we are dealing with a much more virulent Delta. Unfortunately some people took that as an opportunity to politicize, denigrate them, which fueled  the anti vax group.Sadly most in opposition to the vaccine would  rather promote quack Dr’s,animal medications,we even had a president that eventually got vaccinated on the sly,but also promoted bleach and hydroxychloroquine, gargling with betadine, all have been proven by many ad nauseam to be ineffective.

If that wasn’t bad enough, most feel entitled, refusing the shot, refusing masking, distancing, promoting  this ocean of misinformation, downplaying the severity of pandemic “it’s only the old and sick that die,for the rest us  it is a mild disease” to suggest pediatric illness and deaths are small  shows tone deafness but if it is your loved one sick or dying,no amount a data will ease you pain.

So here we are,9 months of vaccinations, yes it still rages on but now 95% of the hospitalizations and deaths are UNVACCINATED,hospital care for the rest of us getting scant in some locations. See a trend here?

There are a few countries that have suppressed the outbreaks. When you have a citizenry that  is willing to abide by the restrictions, progress can be made.Just a few thousand cases and deaths I could count on my fingers and toes, they are fortunate, but for a few I believe they still see the world’s suffering as an abstract observation.

Great post, Pixie.  You said what I would say better a and quicker than I could.

I will just say one thing about he messaging:  The vaccine did as well as promised against the initial virus.  The messaging I heard scientists and doctors said they thought and hoped that their vaccines would protect about as well against future variants.  But there was no way they could know for sure.  They could only speculate as to how the virus would mutate.  Now Delta dominated much of this year.  The fact that some people jumped on this as proof that the vaccines didn't work, and used it as an excuse to not vaccinate is disingenuous to me.  Don't get me wrong, people are free to refrain fromCovid vaccination if they want, but they need to be ready to accept any consequences, such as losing a job that requires vaccination.  And I personally know a bucket of people who are refused access to their grandchildren for not vaccinating and even one lady who is in a legal action to prohibit her maskhole ex from visitation till he gets a vaccine.

And that brings up the other thing, as you mentioned, Pixie.  You can tell the motives of those who don't get the vaccine.  Are they people of principal, or just selfish and entitled?  Do they take actions to protect others?  Or do they just beat their chests and proclaim their "rights?"  And what happens if they decide their children should not get the vaccine, and one or more f the children gets really sick, long Covid, or God forbid, dies?  It is not at all rare, as some think it is.  Last week, I Facetimed with my mother and brother and we talked about that.  My brother said if my parents had ever made a deliberate decision like that that cost any of his siblings lives or long-term health, they would have to look elsewhere for someone to take care of them when they're old, and that they better either be very rich, or hope one of the other siblings would take pity on them.  I doubt he's the only person who feels that way.
