One of my good friends is an herbalist and she and her mom always use grated potato as a poultice when there is a boil, or something under the skin that needs to come out. Grate the potato and lay it over the skin. Cover it with something to hold it there, heat is good also. Change this three to four times daily. Another recipe uses flax seeds, unground, with a little water. Use the same way.

Who else has poultice recipes to share?

Therese thanks for the information.  This will be very helpful.  I wonder if there is any kind of book that you can buy on poultice?

My grandmother made all of her own medicines one of her least favourites for us grandkids was the cough medicine where she would chop up a raw onion sprinkle it with brown sugar, covered it and left over night. the resulting liquid was then dosed out by the teaspoon full, it smelt horrendous and tasted so disgusting we where all too afraid to cough around her in case she made a batch up.
Though the lemon juice, honey and whisky hot toddys are still a winner when we have heavy colds.
She did make poltices, some with bread and others with goose grease but i dont know how she made these.
