During or after any big event whether thats a war or pandemic, change follows. So what are your predictions for 2022 and after? Rely on Ai more? Less proper cash? Things like bitcoin becoming the norm? Less travel? City centres not the heart anymore? Maybe every country will become strong within themselves and not rely on others?

I'm predicting a rather severe hangover in 2022 commencing on Jan 1st.

Happy New Year!!!

I'd predict a stock market reset, and with it a rise in interest rates. I think we'll find many people with negative equity and unable to pay their mortgages. This will lead to more social unrest because of a perceived sense of injustice, particularly in the younger homeowners who will be most affected. More ire directed towards the boomers.

I also think we are teetering on the brink of a hyper inflationary event. I don't think we've ever been more at risk. It might go either way.

The two biggest economic events from recent times that haunt me are Cuba's Special Period (1991) and the Cypriot banking crisis and subsequent banking bail in of 2013. Every bank in operation in the Western world today uses the digital bail in programs that were tested here in NZ and a banking bail in is a very real and present threat to our way of life, but most people are blissfully unaware of it.  In the UK, the government has some insurance on banking deposits but you have to careful how you distribute your money between institutions, but every where else in the world, governments have removed those guarantees and money in the bank is at risk.

Here in NZ the government removed those guarantees in 2008 (and I was the only customer at my bank who noticed this according to my bank manager) and although they announced last year that they were going to reintroduce them, they have refused to put a timeline to that promise and that worries me. Why would they delay? Well maybe they are expecting a significant market reset that may well see some banking institutions fail, in which case they would use the bail in software to grab the money of the depositors (issue them with the worthless stock of the bank) and bail themselves out. The irony of a bail in is that depositors lose any money they hold above a certain amount, but people who owe money to the bank in whatever form do not lose their debt, they still have to pay it off but the interest goes up.

Today the banks of the world hold very little actual money in ratio to the money they loan out and so they are at an increased risk of failure if a widespread default on loans takes place. The lower the interest rates are (and they are negative in some places) the less money depositors place with the banks because there are little or no returns. This money is invested elsewhere (the stock market, hence the surge). The only way to persuade cash rich people to put money in the bank is to raise interest rates - think of the 20% returns of the 80's - but this in turn leads to foreclosure on unmaintainable debts due to the crippling interest rates. Its a catch 22 situation.

With society in general, there may well be a kick back against authority's ever increasing efforts to control even the tiniest aspects of our lives. We've seen personal freedoms disappear over the last 2 years and I predict that people will rise up and demand them back.

Mother Nature may also creep up and surprise us. 2021 saw more active volcanoes than ever before and I'm sure the earth operates on cycles we are just not aware of, and perhaps we'll see a new era of natural phenomena that will remind us that we are but ants sitting on a beach ball, and the beach ball is in charge!

On a personal note, here in NZ we ever more likely to experience the next Alpine Fault rupture, as it's now officially overdue and it's a very reliable fault line. That's always at the back of my mind. So maybe we'll all get to experience that this year. I hope it happens while my children are still living at home and we're all young enough to enjoy it. I don't want to be so old I'm shaken off my feet and break a hip!

I make 2022 sound grim, but instead of grim, substitute exciting. We are living in interesting times. Happy New Year.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.
