this has been a learn as i go thing. i never thought i would need to prep like this. i am not in a panic mode by any means. i have been quietly prepping for months. i believe my kin folks think i am having a middle age crisis. it is far better to have a prep and not need it than vice versa.

i would love to hear what yall have done as far as storage, preps in general. these would include storage of food and water, heat sources, fuel, and security.
we can learn a lot from each other.
if we have time, education may be the key to survival.
i would be happy to dicuss what i have done, what i intend to do and
any thoughts that i have. we may need a little more than luck to survive this.
i work in the medical field. a lot of you do not. so, lets help each other.
thanks,
randy/aka tigger1 Wink

Hi Tigger, I'm ok I think with my water supply.  I have 4, gal 55 drumbs of water about 40 store bought single gallons.  8 cases of individuals bottles of water and we had a hand pum well put in this summer.  We bought a couple extra parts for the well.  My storage space is ok,  of course I could use more, but I can manage with what I have if I get rid of some junk.  For heat We have our regular furnance, we had a wood stove put in for y2k, and have stocked up on wood.  This summer we had a 500 gal.  propane tank installed along with 3 propane heaters thur out the House.  We have 2 6000 watts generators. and hope to store some gas soon .  We already have the 55 gal. drumbs for them.   We are still adding to our preps weekly a little at a time.  I have also bought over the counter medicines.

let me start with the medical field, hospitals. please dont expect any help from your local hospital. im sure they will do the best they can. the care will come on a triage system, the sickest gets the bed. most if not all hospitals will become overwhelmed within a few days to a couple of weeks. i have seen every hospital in this area overwhelmed in a regular flu season. if the bf hits most of your hospital staff will stay home. that is the feeling i get from talking to people.
i know lots of doctors. i have not found a single one that even wants to dicuss the bf.
what i am hearing is very, very little. that is what is scary.

mm,

wow, now that is a good setup. i am prepping for 3. i wont be able to even come close to what you have and will get.
i have 6 55 gal drums of water, a 30 gal drum, 40 gallons of store bought
water and the 30 gallons that will be in my hot water heater. i have been stocking up on food for months. i have a huge variety. variety will be the key as far as food goes. most of my food is in cans. i have a good bit of the
hamburger helper and tuna helper. i have some suddenly salad in the box.
i am from the south. do you know what johnny cakes are? i will be able to make those and cornbread. pancakes can also be used as bread or pancakes. i also have lots of crackers, jelly syrup etc. i have lots of powdered milk and canned milk. shoot, i can mix up a gallon of milk put a can of cream in it and you got close to whole milk. leave the cream out and you got 1% milk or close to it. if the stores are out of bread, you can make it.
mm,
excuse me for rambling on. other people will read this and might get some ideas. that is the whole reason for the website. education, learning, doing and surviving.
i have a 5500 watt gen. i am looking at a 1100 watt. it is much more gas efficient. the main reason for the generator is to keep my brother alive.
he has pulmonary fibrosis and is on O2 24/7.
my fuel for a little heat and cooking will be propane. it is against the city code here to have a big propane tank installed. i can get all the big portable tanks i want. these are portable and would be used in rvs or camping. they cant say anything about that.

mm, thanks for sharing. i read the posts on forums. the posts are so much like articles or stories. there is no life in them. there is no mistakes of fixes in them. there is no feeling in them.

please dont get me wrong. i appreciate all the posts. education needs to also come from people. we need to read what we have done, what works, what does not.
mm,
i cant tell you how much i appreciate you sharing. that is awesome.

thank you

Trigger, It sounds to me like you have a wonderful set up and have all of your bases covered quite well.  My set up sounds like a lot but it wasn't done over night.  I am orginally from the south, Ms.  but lived in Chicago for over 40 years.  We left Chicago, in 1999 running from from the big city if y2k struck.  We laid the foundation for a lot of our emergency survival then.  Every year when we got income tax money back I would put it into some major emergency stuff.  I also save a little money each month in a special fund.  After 5 or six months whatever is in there I take it and put it toward emergency stuff.  Next month i will have about $400 dollars in this fund and will have a propane water heater installed and get rid of the electric one.   By Jan. or Feb. if the bird flu haven't  hit I will exchange my electric stove for a propane one.  I just keep at it little by little.  You reminded me I need to buy more crackers.  How are you storing your crackers?  I admire you for looking out for your brother you guys are blessed to have each other.  By the way what is salad in the box? I remember johnny cakes, do you have a recipe for them?  i would love to have it,if it's not to much trouble for you.  Do you know anyone else that is prepping or do people think you have lost it?  I have almost stopped talking to people about prepping, very few seem intrested.

mm,

this is the medical again. most of the people that i have asked about the bf will stay home. these are the people that i work with. they have families,
babies, young children. they dont own up to prepping but willing say they
will stay home. i have spoken to many of the nurses, most will stay home.
i will speak to the E.R. docs next
if you want to catch the bf, the best place to go would be a hospital. that is if tshtf. can you think of a hospital that is overwhelmed with bf with 50% of the staff staying home. 50% is a lucky guess.
good luck to all. let us survive.

tigger1, I would suggest, reading the early posts on the subjects you want to  learn about. lets say  water go to the ist post and read back , a lot of great info, everything you want to know, it will take a little time to do, but  worth it, some people posted their mistakes or asked for advice and got really good info for their situation    good luck   roxy

Hi Happy camper thanks for the compliment, I just keep plugging away a little at a time.  I have been reading your post and enjoy them very much.  If I remember correctly you have been prepping for a while and have most of your supplies.  I know this is a good feeling for all of us to have stored extra.  Sometimes I still think I'm crazy for doing all of this, but I just keep at it.  I think I might have moved from the crazy phase to being addicted to prepping.  I think I secretly enjoy it, I'm not sure what it is.  Anyway you are welome to come stay and visit after the threat of bird flu is over. ( SMILE)  I would enjoy having you.

Tigger and Mississipp Mama, did you treat your water that is stored in the 55 gal drums?  I wasn't sure what to do actually - go ahead and store the water or wait until later. I have a 1500 gallon water tank, but as of yet, have not filled it up.

Tigger, one of my major concerns is with the medical aspects of all this. Applying bandaids and antibiotic creams is about the extent of my abilities. I have the basic cold medicines, but is there anything thats available over the counter for pain....and was wondering what was the best thing to have incase someone gets cut pretty deeply?  suture kit?  Just the idea of having to sew someone up without being able to deaden it, gives me the shakes.

ikay,
always remember this. 8 drops of plain clorox in any gallon of water will make it sterile. it will not make it clean. i can go down to the cedar creek and get a bucket of water and let it sit for a while. then i pour the creek water into another bucket. this gets rid of the sediment. i then put the clorox into this bucket. if this is for drinking i would pour through a charcoal filter. i have a Brita Pitcher and about 50 charcoal filters. i found them at a salvage store that was going out of business. the filters cost $7.00 a piece at the dollar general. i was getting them for anywhere from
.50 to a 1.00. it pays to be cheap and keep your eyes open.
ikay hope this helps

ikay,

i am sorry i got so wordy i did not reply to all of your post. i would treat as i drawed it out to use it. go ahead and fill it up. worry about it later. water is water.

i am a respiratory therapist, im not a nurse. if you are not comfortable with sewing a wound up then do not! the person you are going to sticth up is going to be in a world of pain. that would hurt. if a fairly major artery is cut
there wont be anything you can do. you can pray.

Our neighbor and landlady (it's a duplex) is an RN at the local hospital.  We've been mentioning BF and pointing out articles to her for months.  Needless to say it has all been taken with a huge quantity of salt.

Last night she rang our door bell and spent a good long time talking to my wife.  She is a little freaked out and seemed worried about BF for the first time.  It seems that at her work yesterday (the hospital) they had mandatory fittings for N-95 masks specifically for avian influenza, they were quite strident about making sure the masks were a propper fit with no leakage or air gaps around the sides. There was a presentation that she said reminded her of the old "duck and cover" propaganda that said, "even though a nuke just went off downtown, SMILE! you can just duck under here like this, and every thing will be just fine! SEE THE HAPPY CHILDREN SMILING UNDER THEIR DESKS?  You'll be fine just like them!".  The tone of "you'll be just fine" to her was saying anything BUT.  Plus there was a page-long article in a professional publication they subscribe to, which apparently affords a degree of authority that her neighbors say-so just didn't rate.

Like I said, she's finally getting that this might be a big deal after all, and it has her worried.  So she came next door and offered us TWO! of the N95 masks she brought home.  My wife had to contain a smile and assured her, "no, that's all right, you keep them"  knowing we have close to a hundered of them.

Tonight I may drop by with a copy of Barry's "The Great Influenza" for her to read, put things in a bit of perspective.
