The pandamic has arrived and we are all prepped to the ceiling with food and comfort items. I just want to know what you think is the most important thing we can be doing right now to prevent catching the flu.
My thought is eat lots and lots of fruits to keep the digestive track clean. Please just keep your suggestions short and to the point. |

we will all get it. because people will eat out, go to school and work, get mail, go to the library... one would have to hide out totally and not even open the door... and I had to have people in to change a battery. (not kidding)

Well, after my son got it, I figure I will get it some time. I will take Tamiflu and do my best. I still go to Walmart late at night but I work in a school so all my avoidance is just a sham. I use hand sanitizer all the time but I will most likely get it.

I do not think we will all get it. No population ever has a 100% infection rate.
My daughters had what may have been the flu, how do we know. They had all the symtoms. I took the ten thousand units of vitamin C every hour, I used a 3% Hydrogen peroxide mixed with tap water and put several drops in each nostril, when my nose felt like I was catching something. I also used Symbocol (elderberry) Royal Jelly, Bee Propolis, and something that the Chinese said they believed helped them through the 1918 flu, which is called Devils Dung, it is really a herb used in Indian cooking, called Asshwadia or something to that effect. I never caught a sniffle. Went to the Dr. for a yearly physical, and they said my 53 year old COPD lungs sounded exceptionally clear. I wash after I touch anything in public. Keep up the fight, a perfectly healthy kid in TN died. No time to get complacent.

I agree abcdefg we need to be vigilent. I think if for no other reason to avoid some secondary illmess, for example strep throat. Everyone needs to be in the best health as possible to give yourself (and kids) a fighting chance.
I have been trying to bump up foods with natural vitamins C, D, B. Oranges hmmm. Multivitamin (some argue it just = expensive pee) Dont forget that some vitamins like D are fat soluable meaning you need to take with a snack that has some fat in it to increase absorbtion.
Also getting the kids a little earlier for sleep. Wash hands frequently.
I have increased my strictness on shoes off at the door. And wiping surfaces down at home. School books in one area then that area cleaned and disinfected.
I too agree my family cannot completely avoid it but cutting down un-necessary exposure has got to at least prolong it.
Hoping that schools will close before my kids get H1N1, think about it not every kid will have it if a school closes, hopefully the kids of parents at AFT will be that percentage. Just do whatever you can to boost your kids immunity systems.
My plan is probably to not give my kids the vaccination, they have had the seasonal, the pneumonia and are up to day with all others. This continues to weigh heavily on my mind and heart.
One local pediatrician actually said that he thinks this (H1N1 pandemic) peaked about two weeks ago, at that time there was only two kids on his local pediatric floor at the hospital. I hope he is correct, but my inner AFT was like " Your an indiot sir." Oh of course I didn't say that. Rest, nutrition, hydration, vitamins, exercise, handwashing. Prayers Hoosiermom

#1: NeilMed Nasal Flush, with a simple sea salt and purified water solution. The nose is the usually the first point of entry, and this simple device (Walgreens $12, now at Wal-mart $9) has been around for over a thousand years (at least the Netipot version). It makes a much more hostile environment for the flu virus to set up camp. Seriously, look into this. I have a compromised set of lungs (due to a rampant pneumonia that almost killed me at a year of age) and have caught every cold that has ever slunk the earth, and the best thing I've ever discovered was the nasal flush -- in me colds almost always last more than a week, and turn into a horrendous cough, and the nasal flush, along with my discovery of ginger, has not only stopped most colds, um, COLD in their tracks, but has kept me from getting my usual nasal infections and nasty cough). The Nasal Flush should be your #1 preventive measure in keeping the flu at bay (and the rhinos, those nasty, horny hippos).
#2: GINGER. Yes, the spice (not the castaway, although...well, nevermind). Ginger is long rooted (get it? got it. good) in most cultures (gingerbread cookies around Christmas time). Candied Ginger. Just think about how REAL Ginger ale makes you feel better (and many natural sodas and brews DO use real Ginger). I think Ginger is better suited to handle the rhino virus of the common cold, but it has been proven effective against the flu. No, it's not a magic bullet, but again, it makes your body more of a hostile environment for the flu to get established. It is a weak antibacterial and antiviral, but is most potent at empowering other herbs (and works well with most flu-fighting herbs). You can pick up capsule form very cheaply, usually about $8-$10 for a bottle of 90 capsules. Take it daily as a preventive, and start adding the spice Ginger to your food. #3: OREGANO. Yes, the spice. It's been used as a curative herb in many cultures and might be one of the reasons the Mediterranean diet is healthier than most. Oregano works great with Ginger, and is just a little bit more expensive in capsule form, but highly effective, Oil of Oregano at about $12 for a bottle of 60 capsules. Look into OREGANOL, which is a highly condensed form of oregano oil, which is much more expensive, but is a proven antibacterial and antiviral, and all-natural herb and oil (the downside is that like garlic it can give you a slightly nasty cloudy smell, which people describe as "pencil shavings," but if it works, and it DOES, it is worth it. A teeny tiny bottle (I think 2 ounces) of the highly condensed Oreganol sells for about $60. But it does go a long way in that one or two drops under the tongue. I'd highly suggest this over colloidal silver, as oregano is 100% GOOD with no downside (other than the smell). Those are my Top 3 preventive measures, although I don't think it will keep you from catching the flu; however, it makes it a much more bumpy ground for the flu to pitch its tents, and it won't LIKE you so much (oh it'll like you, just not quite such a star-struck love). Also, if you don't have a vaporizer going at night, do it. The flu virus does not like humidity. When you catch the flu, at the first signs, seriously, eat sauerkraut. I'm not talking miracles. Just eat it (and add onions to it, and ginger, and oregano), and hydrate your body with green tea instead of plain water. Green tea has proven to be a bump in the road for flu. I think these are the best measures for surviving a Cytokine Storm, as these simple, cheap, common sense measures hamper the flu, trip the virus, cause some stumbling of the flu, which I think provides for a better, calmer, less spastic immune reaction. Doing things to "switch off" the immune system are just plain stupid. You want a strong immune system (you just don't want it to freak out). Sambucus is also a great immune-strengthening measure, and it is a little pricey, but it has been clinically proven to fight the flu virus, and yes, it does strengthen and aid the cytokines in your immune system, but you WANT a strong immune system. REST, this should be a no-duh knowledge base item, but it is rarely mentioned in fighting the flu,or in NOT GETTING THE FLU. Ensuring that your body has enough rest is a much better and much more practical defense than washing the hands (but yes, wash the hands, another no-duh everyone should know kind of thing). The perfect amount of sleep is different for everyone, and you should figure out what yours is (and it won't be less than 7 hours, even if you might think so, it will be 7 or more hours, some people seriously need 9 or 10 hours, I personally seem to flourish with seven hours and anything more makes me dopey). |

As with the first poster, DIET (as in what we eat).
YES, fruit. Fruit, fruit, and more fruit. And some fruit. Fresh fruits. Canned fruits (make sure there is no high fructose corn syrup involved). Pineapple, and avocado (yes, I hate it that avocado is officially a fruit, but it is, so we just have to accept it). No, avocado is not fattening. YES, leafy green vegetables. As a preventive, start eating lots of salads comprised mostly of green, dark green, light green, and more green, all kinds of the lettuces (yes, they kind of are like weeds, I know). |

When I notice a sore throat coming on, I start to gargle with apple cider vinegar, followed by a chewable vitamin C. Nine time out of ten, I wake up in the next morning without a sore throat.
