Twenty people have come down with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, or bird flu, in the Spanish region of Aragon, local media are reporting.

The infected patients have been admitted into hospitals in Teruel and Zaragoza as a result of the outbreak.

Local health authorities said on Thursday the H5N1 strain of influenza A virus involved was unusual but covered by standard medical guidelines.

Among the measures being taken are vaccination of family members and isolation of patients, local daily El Periódico de Aragon reported.

Health authorities are now warning people of the importance of prevention. Vaccinations are available at health centres until March.

"You don't have to belong to a risk group" such as children or people aged over 65 years of age, the regional health department said of the outbreak.

Bird flu rose to international prominence in 2009 after a global pandemic.

Most cases of avian influenza  â€” a respiratory disease which originates in birds — are relatively mild, but severe cases can lead to hospitalization or even death.

Bird 'flu outbreak in Aragón leaves 11 in intensive care
By:
thinkSPAIN , Friday, January 10, 2014

AN OUTBREAK of bird 'flu in Aragón has led to 11 people being admitted to intensive care and nine others under observation on wards.

The regional government says nine patients are in various hospitals in the province of Zaragoza, of whom eight are in the intensive care unit, and 11 in centres in Teruel province, three of whom are in the ICU at the Obispo Palanco city hospital.

They are said to have been affected by the H1N1 virus which causes the so-called avian influenza, or more commonly referred to as bird 'flu, a potentially life-threatening condition which first hit the headlines nearly eight years ago.

Health authorities in Aragón say this is 'not an habitual outbreak' and have attempted to assuage fears of an epidemic, but they have activated emergency procedures set up to handle bird 'flu cases.

These involve vaccinating the immediate family members and anyone else who has come into contact with the patient, who is placed in isolation.

Aragón's health ministry has also stressed the importance of anyone who works with the public, especially the sick, elderly or children and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition or aged 60 or over ensuring they have their annual influenza vaccinations, which are normally available until March.

This said, the jab does not protect against bird 'flu or its mutant form discovered five years ago, swine 'flu.

The first post says that h5n1 rose to prominence in 2009 after a global pandemic so I assume that it was a typo and in reality they are talking about h1n1.

Yeah, we hope it was a typo. There are so many alpha/numeric variations, it's hard to keep track.

It's either a typo the reporter is confused.

Typo - this would be all over the internet if it was H5N1. I missed this thread when it was first posted and it certainly got my pulse rate up there for a minute  Shocked

A lot of typos and bad reporting lately, as well as testing and reporting issues. Hope they didn't mean h7n9 in Canada recently instead of h5, but who knows at this point.

That first report talks about vaccines, but is there a vaccine for H5N1?

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

MADRID, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- An influenza outbreak has been reported in Spain, where officials said 239 people have been hospitalized, many with http://www.upi.com/topic/H1N1/ - H1N1 , the strain known as bird flu.

Eleven people have died since the start of flu season in October in the country, ThinkSpain reported. The most serious case was in Aragon, where 26 people contracted H1N1 resulting in one death.

Health officials said fatalities thus far have been limited to the elderly, children or people with chronic medical conditions. Officials urged at-risk populations -- including seniors, the young and people who work with either -- to get a flu vaccination.

Of those hospitalized, nearly seven in 10 cases lead to pneumonia and many require intensive care to recover.
