The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1I4LOsR ) reports the Ohio case cropped up in a commercial deer operation in which deer are bred for enormous antlers, then shipped to fenced hunting preserves to be shot by hunters willing to pay thousands of dollars.

Real sporting, eh?

It isn't reported anywhere, but the concern is that CWD from deer will cross species into dairy cattle.

Why?

a) dairy cattle and deer like each other's company and graze side-by-side

b) CWD is transmitted by urine, feces, or saliva - deer aren't carnivores, so they are able to pass it amongst themselves

It's just a matter of time.  We have CWD in Illinois herds, I don't eat venison anymore.  Lots of TB out there as well.

Smart!  I wish I had the discipline.  I do keep working in that direction.

Be safe, Chuck

I am with Chuck on that one.  I wish I had the discipline.

If you want to go 1/2 way for your health protection, why not give up those parts of flesh which most closely resemble us?  Mammals first, then birds, lastly fish.  The only incurable diseases I am aware of (that can not be prevented from transmission by cooking) come from mammals.  The closer it is genetically, the more "bugs" we have in common.

If it is the welfare issue which bothers you you could try my compromise.  I do not eat the bright, or anything which is tortured for production.  So, no squid, octopus or pig: as they are too intelligent,  no lobster, crab (cooked alive) oysters (eaten live) or any meats produced without stunning such as Halal.

I also will not eat any primate - no matter how distant, so no Rabbit.  (Genetics reveal them to be a primate.  Howzat for a surprise!)  Hares are still on the menu, they turn out to be an extreme species of deer.

148 deer in Tennessee test positive for deadly disease

Dec. 16, 2019 Updated: Dec. 16, 2019 2:18 a.m.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nearly 150 deer in Tennessee have tested positive for chronic wasting disease so far this season, according to the state Wildlife Resources Agency.

The deer infected with the deadly disease were identified during a test of 8,700 deer, news outlets report, citing an agency statement. Infected deer were found in Tipton, Shelby, Fayette, Hardeman and Madison counties. The state Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved $1 million for an incinerator to dispose of the infected carcasses.

The disease first recorded in the U.S. in the 1960s was found in Tennessee last year. The statement says the agency began testing during the 2018-19 hunting season when 185 deer were found to be infected with the contagious neurological disease, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is believed to be caused by abnormal proteins that damage brain and spinal cord tissues.

Though there have yet to be any recorded cases in humans, the agency recommends people avoid eating meat from infected deer. The disease may spread through contact with contaminated body fluids, tissue or indirect contact, according to the agency. It may incubate for more than a year and infected animals may slowly develop symptoms, which include stumbling, listlessness, drooling and excessive thirst, among other issues.
