Doctors warn against "extremely contagious" stomach virus in Midwest

Published:

QUINCY, Ill. (WTHR) — An "extremely contagious" stomach virus is making its way across Illinois.

Doctors at SIU Center for Family Medicine told WGEM they started seeing cases of the virus a few weeks ago.

That virus is has made its way across Iowa and Missouri, too, http://www.wgem.com/story/38604154/2018/07/09/local-doctors-warn-against-extremely-contagious-stomach-virus" rel="nofollow - according to WGEM.

Doctors say the symptoms of the virus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The virus lasts 24 to 48 hours.

"Keep pushing water," Dr. Bill Dixon at SIU Center for Family Medicine http://www.wgem.com/story/38604154/2018/07/09/local-doctors-warn-against-extremely-contagious-stomach-virus" rel="nofollow - told WGEM. "Keep pushing fluids. It's the dehydration that's going to get folks in trouble. If you can keep from getting severely dehydrated, typically it'll fix itself."

To prevent the virus from spreading, Dr. Dixon recommends washing your hands frequently.
