SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) -- Pediatricians are seeing a higher number of hand, foot and mouth disease than normal in the Salt Lake Valley. We can all do a better job at preventing the spread of the disease by hand washing.

Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Reduced appetite
  • A sore throat
  • A feeling of being unwell
  • Sores, rash, bumps, and blisters

It's usually seen in children under 5 years old, but it can happen in older children and adults.

"It's usually worse for the children but occasionally there is a strain that can make you miserable," said Dr. Per Gesteland, U of U School of Medicine, Primary Children's Hospital.

Hand foot and mouth disease is contagious and very common in daycares.

"Be vigilant, if you or your child get sick, try not to go out. Wait until your child doesn't have a fever anymore and the sores are healed up," said Dr. Gesteland.

Primary Children's Hospital says other illnesses they're watching are gastrointestinal illnesses often spread at picnics or parties and they're also seeing several respiratory viruses going around, which are seen normally in the winter.
