French minister says patients should take paracetamol rather than ibuprofen or cortisone

The country’s health minister, Olivier Véran, who is a qualified doctor and neurologist, tweeted on Saturday: “The taking of anti-inflammatories [ibuprofen, cortisone … ] could be a factor in aggravating the infection. In case of fever, take paracetamol. If you are already taking anti-inflammatory drugs, ask your doctor’s advice.”

Health officials point out that anti-inflammatory drugs are known to be a risk for those with infectious illnesses because they tend to diminish the response of the body’s immune system.

The health ministry added that patients should choose paracetamol – which is known in the US by the generic name acetaminophen and commonly by the brand name Tylenol – because “it will reduce the fever without counterattacking the inflammation”.

Dubious advice. 

It should say in the early stages of the coronavirus during fever please avoid ibuprofen. For the reasons described. However in the later stages when secondary infection starts. Ibuprofen can be beneficial reduce inflammation in the lungs.

expert reaction to reports that the French Health Minister recommended use of paracetamol for fever from COVID-19 rather than ibuprofen or cortisonecortisone.

Prof Paul Little, Professor of Primary Care Research, University of Southampton, said:

“There is now a sizeable literature from  case control studies in several countries that prolonged illness or the complications of respiratory infections may be more common when NSAIDs are used – both respiratory or septic complications (1-10) and cardiovascular complications (11, 12). The observational evidence is always difficult to interpret due to so called protopathic bias/confounding by indication (i.e. were the NSAIDs prescribed at an early stage of the complications developing and so the NSAID use reflects the complications or a more severe illness rather than causing it), but where this has been controlled for the associations still persists(2). The finding in two  randomised trials that advice to use ibuprofen results in more severe illness or complications (13, 14) helps confirm that the association seen in the observational studies is indeed likely to be causal. Advice to use paracetamol is also less likely to result in complications(13).”

Seems the government doesn't want people using Advil. Maybe its because of hoarding. 

I suspect the government is pumping out propaganda to stop people hoarding. 

I noticed the same message with face masks. There are many studies proving that p2 face masks are effective against airborne viruses. 

My take on Ibuprofen is it shouldn't be taken during the fever stage. If however you have 2ndary  infection and inflammation in the lungs it should be taken. Note I'm not a doctor. I have just read lots of clinical studies around ARDS.

What's the information on aspirin ?

Anyone? 

My take on what I have read is that you should not take aspirin either.  It is also an NSAID.

I thought so too, Just threw it out there...

Again, not a doctor, but Asprin (yes it is an NSAID) is very similar to ibuprofen.  The first stage no, second stage yes, is a good rule of thumb.  I would not like to guess at how long to wait though.  Definitely not until the fever has subsided.

That also goes for naproxen and diclofenac.

DJ-What I understand that there is no real proof against Ibuprofen but chances of complications increase ?

Having just watched that, I would say:  

"Under no circumstances take any NSAID with the wu."

NSAIDS

• ibuprofen.
• naproxen.
• diclofenac.
• celecoxib.
• mefenamic acid.
• etoricoxib.
• indomethacin.
• ASPRIN.

Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet, but if you are taking aspirin prescribed by your doctor to prevent stroke or blood clots or heart attack - DO NOT STOP unless your doctor tells you to stop.

You could ask your doc if there were an alternative, but don't just stop.

Incidentally, asprin at very low dose is not medically considered an NSAID.

I take aspirin but if I got sick I would stop.  No doc told me to do it at 70 you just know to do it.   If you take it for a reason don't stop but contact your doctor to see what he says.  I bet it is stop if you get sick but other than that continue.
