Even as its infections have accelerated, Russia remains the only one of the 10 most-affected nations with a death rate below 1%. Spain, France and the U.K. have mortality rates among those confirmed to have coronavirus ranging from 12% to 14%, while the U.S. comes in at 6% and Germany at 4.4%. Globally, out of 4.3 million known infections, 293,366, or 6.8%, have died. ------------- If it's to be - it's up to me! |

But are we really at 6.8%?!?! Here in Canada it's 72,200 cases & 5301 deaths so 0.0734 percent fatality... 6.8% overall seems awful high? Or is my very tired brain not thinking right and that's 7% vs .07% ??? ------------- If it's to be - it's up to me! |

Russia is just one of many countries that seems to have a very low Case Fatality Rate. Many of the Middle Eastern countries are in the same situation [Qatar 0.06%, Bahrain 0.16%, Djibouti 0.25%, Oman 0.48%, Saudi Arabia 0.63%, Kuwait 0.67%, Palestinian Territories 0.73%]. It seems that they are willing to test for, but not to attribute deaths to, the coronavirus. To get a good picture one needs to look at total deaths and what is being recorded as pneumonia or heart attack / stroke and if these are up against a 'normal year'. We can expect statistical variation between countries, but as a standard one could use a country with a record of a good testing policy such as South Korea. South Korea has a Case Fatality Rate of about 2.35% - so if a country seems to be doing significantly better than they are probably using a different definition for what is a "Corvid19 death". Differing definitions do make country to country comparison hard. |
