This is news from University of Arizona in the USA:

I find this fascinating, as during the original SARS outbreak of 2003, it was determined that the outbreak was fomented by a malfunctioning toilet system in an apartment building in Hong Kong! -

Private sewer, private well,  they were on the checklist when we bought this place.  REALLY glad now!

We had both and I was very pleased, until I discovered neither were adequate.

We used water sparingly so when guests came the sewer would tend to overflow, even the farmer who emptied it encouraged us to hook up to the town system.   We hooked up to the town system when we were required to put in a better system and there was not enough land between out house and the road for this.

As for water, the original well was OK but before we came the moving of the road layout took out some of the front of the property and the new well (higher up the slope the house is built on) was never adequate so the previous owner joined the village supply.  But at least we have a little water for short emergencies.
