I believe the CDC knew at the onset that the vaccine escape was a problem,so let’s not count all cases. If we went state by state we will find increasing breakthroughs.

BOSTON (WHDH) - Eighty fully vaccinated Massachusetts residents have died from COVID-19 and the number of breakthrough cases reported across the state has surpassed 5,000, new public health data shows.

As of July 17, 716 more fully vaccinated residents had tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the number of breakthrough cases statewide to 5,166, numbers released by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health indicate. Fifty-seven fully vaccinated residents were hospitalized and later died from the virus, while 23 others who were vaccinated died without going to the hospital.

Deputy director of the Barnstable County Social Services Department, said 93% of cases were detected in men and the median age is 35, with cases detected at ages ranging from 20 to 70 years. Seventy-three percent of the 132 cases reported as of Friday are symptomatic, Harik said, and the majority of symptoms are mild.

The number of cases among those vaccinated is being investigated, Harik said, but it is “significant” and “greater than the vaccine’s 5% effectiveness rate.” City manager Alex Morse said cases among those who are vaccinated made up the “vast majority”.

There are so far 256 confirmed cases in the Provincetown outbreak. Of them, 109 are from people who live in Cape Cod's Barnstable County -- less than half of the total --while 66 are from people who don't live in Massachusetts, Morse said.

More than 150 people have died and nearly 600 have been hospitalized in Illinois due to COVID-19 in "breakthrough" cases after they were fully vaccinated, according to state health officials.

According to data updated Wednesday by the Illinois Department of Public Health, 159 people in Illinois have died due to COVID-19 or complications after being fully vaccinated. That figure equates to 2.3% of COVID-19 deaths in the state since Jan. 1, officials said.

At least 593 fully vaccinated people have been hospitalized in Illinois, IDPH said. The state only reports breakthrough infections among those who have been hospitalized or died, following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH said.

The Johnson and Johnson vaccine is not fully effective against the Delta variant!! 

I can't believe they are still vaccinating using it.  (They are.  I checked.)

Moderna, PfizerBiontech and AstraZeneca all are >92%  effective.

I need to clarify that >92% effective status.  It relates to preventing serious disease and death.  The reduction of transmission is lower.

Thankfully, Cape Cod has suspended J&J vaccinations, but there are still many people relying on earlier vaccinations with that vaccine.

Misleading articles. Massachusetts has one of the highest rates of vaccination in the USA (I live in MA). Cape Cod is the biggest tourist destinations in the state (Barnstable and Provincetown). The mortality rate is a fraction of a percent. Testing positive is not considered a break through case.

Looks like people are still getting the J+J shot.

Maybe you should read my post again. The numbers are VACCINATED Breakthrough cases.

The higher the vaccination rate is, the higher these bogus "break through" cases will be. Mild and asymptomatic positve test results aren't considered "break though" cases.

Everything about this can be misleading.

Firstly, the more people vaccinated, the more of the cases will be among vaccinated people.  This is not proof of vaccine failure, just simple mathematics.  If everyone were vaccinated, the handful of deaths would be 100% from vaccinated people;  there would be no one else to get sick!

Secondly, no vaccine is 100% effective.  Some people have immune systems so damaged by other diseases, the vaccine can't protect them.  They are vaccinated anyway (usually) as a tiny bit of protection is better than none at all.  

Some people have had the J&J vaccine, and it does not quite score as well at fighting the Delta variant.  It performs as well when a booster shot of one of the others is given too, but on its own it allows a few more 'breakthrough' cases.

Any of this set of data can be 'repackaged' to make an argument for or against the effectiveness of the vaccines.

Having said all that, and being convinced that the current variants are adequately covered for by the current vaccines (excepting sinovac and J&J)  it is still important to watch for this sort of thing.  I don't think it did so this time, but it might forewarn us of vaccine failures in the future.
