I think the permafrost is really one to watch. I read something quite a while ago saying that scientists believed there were thousands of potentially lethal pathogens buried in it that hadn't seen the light of day for thousands of years and that if they were exposed and released through thawing, the human population and the many animal populations would have no resistance to them. They would be like zoonotic viruses today. And then there's the methane release.......

A new study in Geophysical Research Letters finds that the Arctic permafrost is the largest repository of mercury on Earth. Mercury is a http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs361/en/ - potent neurotoxin . And scientists now think there is around 15 million gallons frozen in permafrost soils — nearly twice the amount of mercury found in all other soil, the ocean, and atmosphere combined.

I read an article about this years ago.  I wish I could find it again and post the link.  It reviewed that Russian scientists were finding never before viruses in the soil in Siberia.  If I remember correctly, American scientists are now investigating the same situation in Alaska's rapidly disappearing permafrost.  It makes me wonder what they're going to find in Antarctica...

That may have been the one I read. Definitely about unknown pathogens. I also remember something about mammalian viruses on frozen mammoths that no longer exist in our world but that could make a comeback.
