A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the northeastern prefectures of Miyagi and Fukushima on Wednesday night, registering an upper 6 on Japan’s earthquake intensity scale, one step below the top level.

The weather agency issued a 1-meter tsunami advisory for the two prefectures, calling on local residents to stay away from the sea coast.

According to the Meteorological Agency, the quake struck at 11:36 p.m. off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture

The quake was also felt in Tokyo, where it lasted for several minutes and led to power outages across the city.

More than 2 million homes in the Kanto region had lost power, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.

The government has set up a task force at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed officials to conduct rescue operations in cooperation with government ministries and municipalities.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory for the northeastern prefectures of Fukushima and Miyagi.

A magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at 11:36 PM on Wednesday.
The depth of the focus is estimated at 60 kilometers.

The quake had a maximum intensity of 6-plus on Japan's seismic scale of zero to 7. Tremors were felt across wide areas of eastern Japan. A tsunami one meter high is expected to hit coastal areas.

Meteorological Agency officials are calling on people in the affected areas to stay away from the coast.
The quake triggered blackouts and disrupted train services in wide areas, including the greater Tokyo area.

Tokyo Electric Power Company is checking its nuclear power plants in Fukushima Prefecture after a strong earthquake struck the region.

TEPCO says its workers are confirming whether there are any abnormalities with the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini plants.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says more than 2.09 million households in nine prefectures in its service area are being left without electricity after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan.

These include more than 700,000 households in Tokyo, over 300,000 in Kanagawa, more than 290,000 in Saitama, over 210,000 in Chiba, more than 220,000 in Ibaraki, more than 120,000 in Tochigi, more than 80,000 in Gunma, more than 110,000 in Yamanashi, and over 26,000 in Shizuoka.

TEPCO is working for recovery and investigating the cause.

Update (1154ET): Residents in the Miyagi Prefecture of Tokyo on the east coast of Honshu island have been told to evacuate after the quake. Tsunami advisories are still active.

Radiation levels at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant are normal.

The area where the quake struck is northern Japan was previously devastated by a 9.0 magnitude quake and tsunami in 2011 that also caused a nuclear disaster.
