Before anyone says, "this happens all the time in China"  I know, but still good to keep a watch on this because millions of birds in US have been killed due to a deadly Avian Flu outbreak also.  With China on lockdown and not transparent with info......

Two people who are hospitalized in critical condition in mainland China have tested positive for H5N6 bird flu, raising the number of cases so far this year to 19, officials say. The spike in human cases has led to calls for increased surveillance.

The first case, a 28-year-old man from Puyang in Henan Province, developed symptoms on March 18 after exposure to live poultry, according to the Hong Kong Health Department. He was hospitalized the next day and remains in critical condition.

ADVERTISMENT

The other case, a 53-year-old woman from Zhenjiang City in Jiangsu Province, fell ill on March 24 after visiting a live poultry market. She was hospitalized two days later and is still in critical condition.

Other details about the cases were not released by the Chinese government, which often takes weeks or months to announce new cases.

The Chinese government disclosed last month that a 12-year-old girl and a 79-year-old man died of H5N6 bird flu in December. Both lived in Liuzhou, a city in the Guangxi region, and visited a live poultry market before falling ill.

ADVERTISMENT

Only 78 people have been infected with H5N6 bird flu since the first confirmed case in 2014 but most infections were diagnosed during the past year. At least 19 cases, including five deaths, have been reported so far this year.

https://bnonews.com/index.php/2021/10/tracking-human-cases-of-h5n6-bird-flu/" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 17.600000381469727px; vertical-align: baseline; opacity: 1; transition: all 0.25s; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); box-shadow: rgb(194, 194, 194) 0px -4px 0px inset; - H5N6 bird flu is known to cause severe illness in humans of all ages and has killed nearly half of those infected, including children and young adults. The outcome in most of the other cases has not been disclosed and only 8 people are known to have recovered.

There are no confirmed cases of human-to-human transmission though a woman who tested positive last year denied having contact with live poultry.

“The increasing trend of human infection with avian influenza virus has become an important public health issue that cannot be ignored,” researchers said in a study published by China’s Center for Disease Control in September. The study highlighted several mutations in two recent cases of H5N6 bird flu.

Thijs Kuiken, a professor at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, expressed concern about the rising number of cases. “It could be that this variant is a little more infectious (to people) … or there could be more of this virus in poultry at the moment and that’s why more people are getting infected,” Kuiken told Reuters in October.

Earlier that month, the World Health Organization said the risk of human-to-human transmission remains low because H5N6 has not acquired the ability for sustained transmission between humans. However, increased surveillance is “urgently required” to better understand the rising number of human cases, the spokesperson said

Good find Roni. There are so many "officials" telling us that the next pandemic with come from a bird flu and that Covid was only a practise run. Perhaps it's something that they are brewing up for us! A 50% fatality rating would certainly get everyone's attention.

There were some reports of co-infection of flu and Omicron in NL...BA.2 subvariants spreading fast in China and may mix with H5N6...

Chinese state news has announced that they have uncovered new Covid cases in Beijing caused by a subvariant of Omicron. They haven’t said exactly which subvariant of Omicron though.

“Beijing authorities said on Wednesday that several individual COVID-19 transmission chains were found in the city recently. The officials vowed to unwaveringly uphold the “dynamic-zero” approach despite great complexity of the epidemic prevention work. Some of the cases are infected with an Omicron subvariant, which has little homology with previous cases found in the city or nationwide.

Beijing reported seven new locally transmitted cases on Wednesday, including four in Shunyi district and three in Chaoyang district. The cluster infection at a South Korean-style clothing store in Chaoyang has drawn particular attention. 16 people related to the cluster infection tested positive for coronavirus.

The infection also spread to a kindergarten, infecting one child and one teacher. There are 12 staff members and 113 pre-school children in the kindergarten.

The Chinese Global Times newspaper has also published a fierce defence of China’s dynamic zero-COVID policy, pointing out that Omicron has killed more people in Hong Kong than the Delta variant over a specific time period. They also point to the long term effects of infection and the vaccination status of many elderly Chinese as reasons why they should continue with the policy.

Our opinion:

There is no right or perfect way to fight a virus that is hell-bent on infecting every person on the planet. One thing is for sure though; helping the virus achieve its objective by removing all mitigations is not going to work (and we still haven’t seen ANY scientific data to back up the notion).

It’s already apparent that the lifting of Covid mitigations across Europe has allowed dozens of new variants and recombinants to be generated and to proliferate across the globe, threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. More variants are sure to come…

PREDICTION: A new variant with pathogenicity that outcompetes all previous variants by a very wide margin is on the way. With vaccines waning, a multi-layered defence of NPI’s may be the only tools we are left with to deal with the new threat.

UPDATE 1 – 10th April 2022:

“Endemic SARS-CoV-2 implies vast transmission resulting in yearly US COVID-19 death tolls numbering in the hundreds of thousands under many plausible scenarios, with even modest increases in the IFR leading to an unsustainable mortality burden.”

DJ Flu and CoViD can co-infect but the chance of creating ONE new virus out of the flu-virus and corona-virus is as good as 0%...('two very different animals")..."Flu-rona co-infection spread however may become a problem. Co-operation between two virusses, the one "helping" the other to spread/infect may be a "nightmare scenario"...

From that perspective more H5N6 showing up maybe in people after a-symptomatic CoViD ???????

Just reading on twitter H3N8 just killed a 4 year old in China on bno news.  They said it was the first official detection of this virus in a human although they feel it was what caused the 1889 pandemic also called the Asiatic or Russian flu.  They think it is avian in nature although it affects horses and dogs also.  They don't think it has the ability to go human to human.

Still....scary!

In 2003, 89 people in the Netherlands were confirmed to have been infected by H7N7 following an outbreak in poultry on approximately 255 farms. One death was recorded - a veterinarian who had been testing chickens for the virus - and all infected flocks were culled. Most affected people had mild symptoms including  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjunctivitis" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background: none;" title="Conjunctivitis - conjunctivitis . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H7N7#cite_note-1" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background: none; - [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H7N7#cite_note-2" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background: none; - [2] Antibodies were found in over half of 500 people tested according to the final official report by the Dutch government:

As at least 50% of the people exposed to infected poultry had H7 antibodies detectable with the modified assay, it was estimated that avian influenza A/H7N7 virus infection occurred in at least 1000, and perhaps as many as 2000 people. The seroprevalence of H7 antibodies in people without contact with infected poultry, but with close household contact to an infected poultry worker, was 59%. This suggests that the population at risk for avian influenza was not limited to those with direct contact to infected poultry, and that person to person transmission may have occurred on a large scale. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H7N7#cite_note-3" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background: none; - [3] Final analysis of Dutch avian influenza outbreaks reveals much higher levels of transmission to humans than previously thought. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H7N7#cite_note-4" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background: none; - [4]

DJ, I think the problem with a lot of types of "bird-flu" is that it does not only infect birds...other species may get mild/no symptoms...unless they have a weakened immunity (because of an other infection...).

https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/china-reports-first-human-case-of-h3n8-bird-flu or https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/china-reports-first-human-case-of-h3n8-bird-flu - https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/china-reports-first-human-case-of-h3n8-bird-flu ;

BEIJING (REUTERS) - China has recorded the first human infection with the H3N8 strain of bird flu, the country's health authority said on Tuesday (April 26), but said the risk of it spreading among people was low.

A four-year-old boy from central Henan province was found to have been infected with the variant after developing a fever and other symptoms on April 5.

No close contacts were infected with the virus, the National Health Commission (NHC) said in a statement.

The child had been in contact with chickens and crows raised at his home, it added.

The H3N8 variant has previously been detected elsewhere in the world in horses, dogs, birds and seals, but no human cases of H3N8 have been reported, said the NHC.

The commission said an initial assessment determined the variant did not yet have the ability to effectively infect humans, and the risk of a large-scale epidemic was low.

Many different strains of bird flu are present in China and some sporadically infect people, usually those working with poultry.

time will tell....Maybe it could get involved in a form of "flu-rona" flu-corona co-infection...in children ? After a first CoViD infection giving less immunity ?
