I've thought for some time now that it makes sense to require everyone to wear masks.  Even if just a surgical mask which doesn't protect but prevent.  Everyone is prevented from spreading virus so transmission would be slowed.

Experts say face masks can help slow COVID-19, despite previous claims

To mask or not to mask, that is the question.

But scientists now think you may want to put a face mask on it after all — if you have one.

Their advice is laid out in a new report in Science Magazine.

People in Asian countries have been wearing masks for months, which the head of the Chinese Center for Disease and Prevention supports.

In the US, face masks are in short supply and government officials want the rapidly dwindling supply saved for health-care professionals.

“This virus is transmitted by droplets and close contact. Droplets play a very important role —you’ve got to wear a mask, because when you speak, there are always droplets coming out of your mouth,” the Chinese Center’s George Gao told the magazine.

“Many people have asymptomatic or presymptomatic infections. If they are wearing face masks, it can prevent droplets that carry the virus from escaping and infecting others,” he said.

KK Cheng, a public health expert at the University of Birmingham in the UK, put it bluntly:

“It’s not to protect yourself. It’s to protect people against the droplets coming out of your respiratory tract… I don’t want to frighten you, but when people speak and breathe and sing —you don’t have to sneeze or cough — these droplets are coming out,” he said.

Besides slowing the spread of COVID-19, a few researchers think masks can help prevent people from getting it as well.

“It doesn’t make sense to imagine that … surgical masks are really important for health care workers but then not useful at all for the general public, said Benjamin Cowling, an epidemiologist at the University of Hong Kong. “I think the average person, if they were taught how to wear a mask properly … would have some protection against infection in the community.”

Cheng agreed: “Just imagine you’re traveling in the New York [City] subway on a busy morning. If everyone wears a mask, I’m sure that it would reduce the transmission.”

The guidance is in stark contrast to the stern words that came from the U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams only a few weeks ago.

“Seriously people- STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and out community at risk,” Adams tweeted on Feb. 29

Its working for Japan. They have the best results so far.

I've been watching a Japanese twitch streamer walking the streets. I've been very surprised to see restaurants and cafe's open.  They seem to be operating at near full capacity. I think some places are closed such as pubs and clubs. Everyone wears a mask. Its like there's almost no restrictions...

The Japs are very disciplined and respectful of others.  Its working for them

I watched another streamer in Vietnam for a few hours last night. Everyone is required to wear a mask. The police are fining people.

I think the US government released propaganda around masks saying they don't work. I think they were caught with their pants down and not able to provide PPE to front line medics. They were possibly trying to stop people hoarding them so they could buy them??? The statement said that surgical masks are ineffective, which is essentially true. However P2 masks are effective. There have been countless tests showing this.  I don't know, Its my conspiracy. I cant see any other reason why they would say they dont work... Its idiotic

No masks has been a mantra of some here too.. I disagree. Masks work.

Maybe the more important factor with wearing a mask is it stops incidental mouth and nose touching. and or if asymptomatic cases infecting others. Masks may also work to remind people to pay attention and do the right thing.

Hopefully when we get caught up with the Masks needed for medical workers, regular citizens can get their hands on masks.

Trump said today in his address that he is considering having everyone wearing masks when they go out. I think they were just saying that before because they didn't have them. They are making plenty now.
