Pebbles, I did the same thing when my favorite soup went on sale. I would rather make chicken soup, but I couldn't pass up 15 oz "Healthy Choice" Chicken with Rice and Chicken Noodle. I went to 3 diffferent Ralphs stores within a few miles from each other. I bought whatever they had on the shelves. I always left a few cans. It didn't feel right to take them all. |

I'm Appalled, oh I didn't take them all. The shelves are restocked after midnight so the stores are loaded in the am. It's just that when I go after 8pm they are out of the popular items like potatoes. So, I just take my limit of 12 cans of corn, etc. This store is a HUGE chain and I'm sure there will be enough for everyone, even if they're like me and stocking up. I just couldn't believe that not one person has asked us why we are buying so much.

I made the comment earlier in this thread that I didn't want everyone knowing that I'm a prepper. I come from a long line of preppers. Mostly just from living out in the country and not wanting to be snowed in without food. Also, when I was growing up, my dad would only work the summer months. My mom stocked up all summer so we wouldn't do without all winter. I am telling people about the bird flu. I bring it up by asking them if they heard "whatever the latest is" on the news. Some of them are taking it seriously and some are not. I've had a few people laugh at me and say it's another Y2K thing. I still tell them that they need to be able to take care of themselves. I just don't go into detail as to what I have in my preps. I have a cousin who is worrying me to death. She goes to town every other day for something for their evening meal. She doesn't have more than a day or two worth of food in her house and she has two young boys. I have been trying to talk to her but she just blows me off. I know there are lots of other people out there just like her. It's scarey to think what is going to happen to these people when the grocery stores are shut down due to the BF.

It is a shame that people in general won't just prep for the sake of their children. Even if they think it's foolish or silly. I mean, if it were just them (adults) then that would be one thing, but we should always consider the children. The future is their's. It is up to us to make sure that they are okay; and they have what they need. So often people have different priorities. I am sorry to hear that especially women as not taking heed of this potential disaster since it is the children who seem to be most at risk, and are looking to us, to keep them safe. Some people have their own agendas or just purely do not comprehend the potential threat. Other merely cannot afford to prep but to laugh is insulting. I'm sorry to say. I know that some people see me as "chicken little" running around saying "oh the sky is falling, sky is falling." But you know what? If the sky does fall, I am ready. I am not normally an alertest, and my family and friends know this about me..all the more reason, I think to listen. I am a bit freaked out by all of this and I may be chicken little right now, but what if chicken little is right? It is insulting for family and friends to laugh when all we are trying to do is to give them a chance to save their own lives. Thank goodness not all are deaf to the issues, however. Some have thanked me for keeping them informed. Perhaps, laughing is their way of coping. I do not know, but to me, it is insulting. They can laugh all they want though, because it won't stop me from preparing. If is gets here. If the worst is realized, we are ready.

I stopped at the local safeway tonight on my way home from work to pick up a paper (for once, that's all I got!). The guy in front of me was buying 8 frozen dinners and a bag of dog food. Somehow I had the feeling that he was buying his week's worth of food and didn't have more than that on hand (and, he looked well-heeled and like he could afford to have more on hand). Unfortunately, there are way too many people who don't see any reason to keep more than a week's worth (or, alas, a day's worth) of food on hand.... -- Libby

Oh this reminds me of my trip to Walmart a couple of weeks ago. I was buying cases of canned goods. I had 3 baskets full of food and prep items. Everyone looked at me and my kids but I told them not to tell anyone. I saw a girl I went to school with and I told her I was just stocking up because I hated going to Walmart...and laughed it off. My son asked why I didnt' tell her the truth and I told him that 1)people might think we are crazy 2)I don't want her showing up at my house mid-pandemic. I did ask the cashier at the Dollar Tree though if she noticed people stocking up on things and she said no. Not really noticing much difference in unusual stockpiling here but I live in a suburb of a city and no one really pays much attention to each other. I definately have started paying attention to sales and stuff especially on canned goods. I still havn't found a good deal on canned goods like those around the holidays. Maybe Easter will bring some good sales! |

Well I can assure you all, this lady can afford it. They are living in a very rich neighborhood, on a Golf course, have no kids at home. They have the money. It's just her lifestyle. Boy it's going to be hard on her and others like her. I'm just hoping to bring it up again as the games are over now, I would expect more on the news in regards to Bird Flu |

I live in central Maryland and volunteer at the local hospital; attend church groups regularly; socialize with friends routinely. I have suggested prepping to friends. They, however, offer numerous ideas counter to any need for prepping at this time. So its become an activity for my family and we're restricting our insights to only those who respond with interest. I'm still working to determine any plans the hospital might have. I can tell you, the secretaries and technicians are totally reliant on the hospital for leadership in this, and they have heard nothing yet. Everyone already practices good hygiene: washing hands with soap & water or the hand cleanser with alcohol; not touching bathroom fixtures/handles after washing; etc. Yet there is a modest level of anxiety on the part of rank and file hospital staffers should this new threat appear. |

I went to the store this evening, just to pick up some powdered eggs. Which has been one item that has been getting away from me, but this evening, I got them. I had to laugh at myself because I have gotten so accustomed to looking for deals that I went crazy buying/prepping again. LOL. There were so many great deals, that I just could not pass them up. I figure that you just cannot have too much, so what the heck. I always look at the expiration dates and know that what I do have will keep for a very long time. The cashier asked me if I was finished stocking up now. I said, "I only came in for the powdered eggs but you had such great prices, I couldn't resist getting in on those deals." When we finished loading everything in our car, my son told me that he felt really happy but he couldn't explain why he felt that way. I believed that I knew the answer, but I didn't tell him. I believe that he is feeling relieved and ready for anything. I know that I am. Thanks for listening. Take care call. |

I shop every Friday morning at 8 am after I drop the boy off at school. I shop this early to avoid the crowds on the weekend. The store is usually lightly populated and I never have to wait to check out. This Friday morning the place was hopping. Not only was I not the only one with a cart piled high but so where alot of other folks carts ,quite a few couples had two carts piled high. Now I'm a Nosey Nellie when it comes to other people"s purchases. I sneak a peek to see which way the wind is blowing. The shoppers this Friday morning had alot of the same things. Bleach, Dog food ,lots of water and canned or boxed Items. I saw a few camp stoves too. What I did not see were "luxery Items" Clothing, electronics, toys for the kids.etc. The clincher was an obviously single guy. no ring, with TWO carts full of stock, no beer or Pork Rinds in sight. I asked the clerk if she had been busy like this for a while. She rolled her eyes and said "It's been busy like this all week!". My sister called me later that day and informed me that on Wensday nite her Wal-Mart was the same way. She's a prepper to and lives in the next town over. So it seems to me, at least in my little town things are picking up. I live in a small town 47 miles south east of Disney. I believe the Orlando area will be one of the first places BF shows up due to the high influx of tourists. |

Albertson's is probably the NW Equalent to a Kroger's in other areas. It is a grocery store chain but they have better prices usually than say a Safeway or privately owned mom and pop grocery. It is the only grocery store that I have found in our area that carries the powdered eggs of any kind, except Fred Meyers where I found (1) white only. They are hard to find, unfortunately. These I found in the baking aisle close to the cake mixes.

Thanks Kelly I did a search for Albertsons or Krogers and none in my area. However, when I looked at the Krogers site, I found references to Dillons Food Stores so I'm sending the hubby tomorrow after work to check it out. |

Okay...I'm desperate...
Does anybody out there know how to go about dehydrating their own eggs? During Y2k, I stored about 900 eggs in a non-refrigerated solution that I got from our local drug store. I can't remember what it was tough ... does anybody else? I have everything, but those damn Iimportant) eggs. HELP! God help us all... Peggy in MN |

Deej, do you have an A&P near you? If so check out their circular this week(online)...it's all about prep stuff....really outrageous deals. I went this afternoon and alot of the stuff was almost gone but I talked to one guy who told me that another truckload was coming in tonight (every night I think) and that I should come back tomarrow morning. Lg. cans of BB salmon for $1!!!!!! Big boxes of Rice Crispies 6 for $10and $1 for gatorade. I've never seen that. Unfortunatlely powdered milk will never go on sale I think. BTW, up here anyway, you can get powdered egg whites in any grocery store. They are in a rather small can in the bakery section and pretty pricey for a little can I thought. |

I am always glad to help if I can. Health Food Stores sound like a good alternative. The cans are very small and pricey but they will be worth their weight in gold..if this happens. The dehydrated/powdered egg whites is in a can about the size of a small crisco oil can. Whole eggs are a lot smaller than that, so it is understandable that they are difficult to find. Good luck. I wish you all well. Happy shopping!

My neighbor told me he purchased $200.00 in mountain house dehydrated food online in the event of worst case scenerio where we have lost all control of our property after the bullets have flown and its time to run to the back up location. P.S. this is her neighbor doing the telling. As I had broght this to her attention some time ago and we both are going to protect each other as a team. I have been stocking up on food for month, getting all the sales, scraping to buy all I can, I even decided to stop smoking as that was more money for the food fund. I have 55 gallon drums ready to fill with water and have developed a plan to make a safe room under one of my sheds floors where we will move all food supplys and water will be accessable, with a way to get out under ground. The amount of preperation, thought and research we have done would blow your mind- from the mouth of kelly. As Kelly has said-----How well did the goverment help katrina victems? And after all the food we have I wonder will it be enough? I have worride about worst case senario and hope not. I know that If this dose happen that it will bring out the worst in people, I have seen the worst in people and have had to deal with it. I tellas many people to prepare for it will be one less person I have to keep away from our food supply.

No stockpiling in The Netherlands at all. No decline in poultry-sales as yet.
We went to our house in France last week to check up after the winter (old farmhouse in the country): no stockpiling whatso ever in France that I could see. Only thing very different from usual: all chickens, ducks, geese and other birds are kept inside: VERY quiet!! Marjo The netherlands |

I went to Major Surplus today to buy some fresh MRE's and the place was packed. MS is one of the top survival supplies store in our area. Older people, whole families, single guys. They were out of a lot of stuff they usually have. Alot of people there were prepping. There was a line when normally there is no wait. I am not relying on MRE's I just think that they are something that is grab and go if you need to move. You need to have both. It is like water filteres and having stored water. If you get pushed out of your home it is best to be prepared. You do not want to be refugee and you certinly do not want to be taken care of by any goverment agency! |

Where was that picture taken? I live in the northeast and have not noticed any sales nor any stocking up by the masses. In fact we are still reelling from the increase in oil prices. I doubt that many people have any extra money at all. |

If I was to guess, it would be a picture of a store where a hurricane was getting ready to hit, or a store that was looted after a huricane hit. Today when I was in Walmart all the 6 gallon water containers from the camping department were gone. |

I went today and got my back up water purifier I needed as the first would only do 200 gallons and my shipment of freeze drice food is to come in two day from mountain house.
As I have to plan that I may have to leave my dwelling. One post said that no one in there country is doing pre work. I have not told my neibors I am so what makes you think they are going to tell you. All of our food stuff is going to be stored under ground in a safe room if this goes to h2h. |
