Sitting here on my desk are two brands of water purification tablets, one military issue, one purchased at Wal-Mart in the camping section. The individual vials are about half the size of a regular bic lighter. each vial contains 50 tablets, active ingredient: Tetraglycine Hyproperiodide (16.7%) and Titratable. Iodine (6.68%) 2 tablets per quart or liter of water, no matter how filthy. You wait five minutes, with the canteen cap loosened, then moisten the treads of the canteen with a small amount of the contents and tighten it, then shake. You have to wait an additonal 30 minutes after shaking before drinking Do the math. 2 tablets per quart or liter...50 tablets per bottle treats 25 quarts. When I said no matter how filthy the water, I mean that quite literally. This stuff is very portable, very easily hidden, very easy to use especially if you don't dare risk bulding a fire to boil water or you are "on the move" and can't carry much in terms of bulk or weight. It's fairly inexpensive. |

I went to Safeway over the weekend, and they had sales on canned food and non perishables like you wouldn't believe, 10 for $10 on so many items. It was as if the government secretly told the stores to put all this stuff on sale now, so people would buy it.... I actually doubt that was it, but it was strange. I've been trying to stock up for a couple months now, and haven't seen a good sale in a grocery store on so many items all at once. |

Something I noticed the other day was that Home Depot has started
carrying a huge amount of various food items in bulk. (Never used
to carry ANY food items before.)
Examp. a "cube" of 15 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese for $9.00. (Got several of these.) When I walked in the door, the first thing I saw were huge pallets of fuel stableizer, then bottled H2O, then batteries & flashlights, then paper towels, then the tons of food items in bulk. Interesting. So much for building supplies being their # 1. God help us all... Peggy in MN |

Thomas, My day of treating water per your post above was a ways back - I know it works because I have drank some nasty yeesh. One thing though the shelf life of the iodine tablets was not so good. I can't remember a time frame though. I think by inspection when they turn dark you throw them away. I think also the bottle is good until you open it - then they start to degrade. Can you comment on that? |

The civilian issue, well there's no exp. date on the product anywhere, and no mention of a test date. The seal is like the thing you find on a jar of peanut butter or aspirin, so I am going to set them in sealing wax as a precaution. I would not recommend using them for an extended period of time, like months on end unless there is simply no other choice. They weren't designed for that kind of use. |

Thanks - I will look at Wal-Mart for some - they would be good to have for an extreme event and I would imagine that they are fairly inexpensive. |

I have almost finished Prepping. I am starting to see that some of the better canned meat like Turkey Spam is starting to disappear from some of the stores that I visit. I'm wondering if any of you have noticed this. My feeling is that people who have a clue are loading up.

I just had a weird experience. I went to the grocery store to get
some dinner and a few last minute items for my preparations. On
the way out of my complex, I drove past a guy wearing some kind of
respiratory mask. He was standing by a car talking casually with
someone sitting inside the parked car. When I got to the store, I
went to the heated table where they normally store chicken and
turkey....completely empty. I found an employee and asked him
where the birds were. He said they were out. Slightly
confused, I wandered over to the water aisle. I've been buying
these 3 gallon jugs recently and wanted to pick up a few more.
There was 1 left. I got in line and noticed that the checkout
lines were formed entirely of boxed and polybagged small water
bottles. My girlfriend and I just kinda gave each other an odd
look and began talking about what we'd do the day the whole thing broke
open. Altogether strange experience. Perhaps a series of
unrelated synchronicities, but it still felt like twilight zone for a
bit.

We also saw a man with a mask yesterday at Walmart in Puyallup. No outages of water, or chicken but it was strange to see this man walking around Walmart with a mask on his face. Makes you wonder. Take care all.

We have a man living in town who had a heart transplant and MUST wear a mask anytime he goes out, at least for awhile. That is a likely explanation. |

We had wondered if he might be a cancer patient too. Just didn't know. Never seen anyone out and about with a mask on before. It was just different. I thought to ask him but didn't want to embarass him, so I didn't. Thought that he might not want to talk about it, you know.

Wow. I purchased my crank radio about a year ago. Not because of BF but because we often go camping and I wanted a way to hear about the weather. It's probably from my days (okay many years) living on the Gulf coast and hurricane seasons. I always want to know what it going on with the weather. Probably explains my need to prepare, as well. Got very used to it down south. I lived in Gulfport, MS for about 17 years. Many of you probably recognize that town now, after Katrina. I still have a lot of friends down there, even after over fifteen years of being away. Still rough living down there even after all these months. I feel for them. Helped out my friends the only way that I could..I called in the troops..my family..and we all helped the best that we could. We also packed up all the goods and clothing items that we could and send them off to be given out to strangers. I know, as they know..we have to make sure that we can take care of ourselves and we cannot count on the government. They may not be there, or be there in time, or for a long time. Good to hear that so many people are preparing, listening and watching. I pray that our worst nightmares are not realized but if they are..I know that we are not alone..others are preparing and others will be better off for having done so. Peace to all. Good night.

In all seriousness here, getting back to the topic... I hvaen't really noticed anything out of the ordinary in my "travels and expeditions" prepping. I think that a lot of us are seeing things a bit differently than we did say six months ago and this heightened level of awareness may be a factor in how we look at the world in a larger sense. When we see someone with a couple of carts full of stuff like that we have been purchasing we kinda make the connection mentally that " Hey, there's another one of us", when it's sheer speculation on our part and probably a subconscious attempt to make our own behavior seem, well, not odd or extra-ordinary, something closer to "normal". This is something that always happens when situations like this come about, where patterns of behavior are self-modified and people begin to look for "acceptance" of their own behavior on some primal level. Screw that. You don't really need to put yourself through that. Just carry on, knowing damn good and well that while there may be a very tiny percentage of people out there prepping that we are only a very small fraction of the population doing so and what you're more than likely "seeing" is the result of heightened perception more than anything else. I can think of about a thousand reasons why someone would be buying most of the stuff I have purchased, in sizable bulk, with a few exception of course. If I was to see someone walking out of one of the military surplus places with half a dozen M9A1's with his family in tow, then I might think that there definitely is a person that's on the same wavelength. I see someone coming out of Costco or Wally-World with a cart of "goodies" near and dear to my own heart, I know that it's probably someone getting ready for the storm season or getting ready to go camping, or doing a event somewhere that requires a case of tuna and bottled water... I'm sorry, I just don't think that Joe-Six-Pack and Sally-Soccer-Mom are really aware of the threat potential, and if they were they would probably toss it because they don't want to think about it period. The world is a busy place, there's hundreds of news stories every day competeing to some extent with BF, and winning most of the time because the "Powers that Be" prefer it that way, and 99 percent of people are paying attention to begin with or are just distracted to such an extent that they can't "center". Face it. We are very different, a special breed of human beings that still retain a greater percentage of survival instinct and intelligence enough to cut through the crap and see things more clearly than others. We are special. |

Glad that we could amaze you. I am a bit puzzled, however. I'm sorry. 100? Only about 100 people have died in Asia? Oh, well in that case..... People. I ask you, is this number okay with you? To me, that is 100 people too many. Am I alone in my thinking? If 100 people were to die of BF in the US. among those 100 people..could be my father, my mother, my sister(s) or my brother. Not to mention my two children, their father, their mother (me) and numerous friends, etc. 100 deaths could wipe out my entire extended family and then some. Just because we don't know those people, or share a country, language, or culture with them..does not mean that we are not concerned for their welfare..and our own. 100 people may seem like a very small number compared to the population of the world, but it's still 100 people that died (what seems to be a horrible death). Let's not even talk about the potential numbers if it mutates. I think that we are keeping it cool. BTY, not all of us are cowboys. We are doing constructive things (preparing and planning). I guess that I don't get why that is not okay????? Who are we harming? No one. I also wonder why it is okay that 100 people died. How many have to die before it's okay to prepare? No, I'm not asking your permission. I am curious, however, of your opinion on what the magic number is. Here's a new twist that I haven't seen mentioned yet..but it may have been..I just missed it.. How many birds have to die? I worry about the balance of nature...how the death of millions..even billions of birds will affect the world..affect our daily living..bugs? If we have phobias..so be it.. I don't like bugs. We are concerned and we are taking action. Thank you.

And here, while I am sitting here, let me elaborate for a few mintes on what I meant in the last posts I made. You all remember Katrina. How many people live on the coastlines that could be effected by hurricanes? Millions. They knew Katrina was coming days in advance and wouldn't even get the hell out of the path of that storm, let alone prep for it. And Hurricane season is a yearly thing, mind you. Calclulate the odds of getting your s*it in the wind if you live on the coastlines regulary efffected by those storms...any Moron, I mean Moron by definition, that wouldn't flee something like that, that WOULD WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAMN DAY TO FILL THE CAR UP WITH GAS OR GO TO THE GROCERY STORE! And millions of people living on the coastlines act that way every damn storm comes along. They wait until the last minute. Truth is...and damn if I'm not hitting the subject on target here, probably two percent of the population is ever going to be on the same wavelength as the people in this forum. They'll wait until it's too late, just like they always do, just like they have always done. This shouldn't be surprising to anyone really. Well... here's a newsflash for those "new" to this forum and the situation: With this, H5N1, if you wait until the last day to make any preparations, you are screwed in a way that makes something like Katrina pall into insignifigance. |

You can't see H5N1, no sattellite images, no radar. If they won't run from or prep for a Cat Five Hurricane they can visually target we really can't expect them to prep for H5N1 making the jump... I have stopped trying to talk to people about it. I just mostly put lists together and prep for me and mine, try to help out here on this forum and a few others when I see someone forgetting something that I thought of or kick myself in the butt when someone comes up with something I didn't think of yet or forgot about... |

Yesterday, was the first time, in what seems like a very long time but really isn't, that I went to the store and did not come out with a buggy or two full of groceries and supplies. I went grocery shopping for last night's meal, bug stray, and for breakfast stuff. It felt strange but I liked it, too. I used to shop like that a lot, and not that long ago, either. I did notice many great deals again..this time Oatmeal..10 for 10, and many other things but the atmosphere seemed different somehow.. There weren't as many non-perishables on sale..more perishables..in the produce aisle and fresh meats.. more than normal. I did not notice anyone with a cart full but of course, it was a work day. I left the grocery store feeling good that I did not have a car load of supplies to deal with when I got home. LOL. It was a good day. My job is very nearly done. A few more things on my very short list..and unless I have forgotten something else important..I will be a free woman! LOL. I didn't realize it, but now, I can hardly wait for that moment. I do feel much more relaxed now..and less anxious knowing that we are in good shape and ready for....whatever may come our way. |

Kelly, I envy you that you are almost done! I'm not (obviously), but at least I now have an accurate, updated list and know excactly what I still need to get. Had a talk with my hubby yesterday about the current status of BF. His reponse:"Well, we just stay at home". I thought, great, he's finally on board. So, what does he do when I tell him we need to prepare? "Oh, no, not like that Y2K thing!!!!!! I could rip out my hairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

It won't take you long now, then. Knowing what to get..taking the guess work out of the equation..really helps to speed things up. We've been at it a good while. Months, really. Started out just getting a couple extra things here and there. I got the list early on, and then, with the income tax return, just went wild shopping. I was feeling a sense of urgency..that's why I went wild, like I did. I don't normally like shopping much.. So, I had to hurry up..you know..like pulling a bandage off.. quick..so it's less painful. I shopped after work, on lunch breaks, on weekends.. Worn out my teenagers, dragging them around with me, as much as I could. They helped me carrying bags, boxes, cartons inside, and in secret. They even helped put things away..and helped with inventory too. Amazingly enough, my teens were right on board with me..beside me all the way..not once did they complain. I'm getting older but I can still run circles around my kids (okay..on a good day - LOL). We have a small place but we do have a pantry. However, it was full with the first two shopping trips but we were not done prepping at that time. It's a lot. A lot to store, find a place to put things. My bedroom is ground zero now. LOL. Everything is organized, and we have been making an inventory list. I'm not finished entering all the items on that inventory list, yet, but my computer crashed last weekend..or I likely would have been able to finish that too. Computer comes home tonight. All better. Yeah!!! The spare CPU is super slow. Not sure how you could motivate your hubbie to help more; to prepare. I guess either a person gets it..or they don't. But please..don't rip out your hairs.. Support is very important.. Perhaps talking to your hubbie in those regards..about being supportive ..even if he does agree with you. Perhaps that would help. I don't really know. Hopefully, it will. Next weekend...we clean. Okay..the teens are going to complain about that though. Happy prepping. Take care!! PEACE, above all. |

I thought that I was finished prepping until yesterday's news. So, I am going this afternoon to get a few more things. Oh and women..(sorry men, I must go here) there are a few items that WE do not want to forget to pick up..just in case.. Don't forget about yourselves..and possible yeast infections..get something to deal with that, and the other stuff too. I picked up some cranberry juice also..good for blatter infections.. My daughter used to get them.. It would be miserable to have some female issues..and not be able to get what you need, when you need it.. Just a thought. I have made appointments for my children to get the pneumonia vaccine. That happens tomorrow evening. I will check to see if I can get one also, but feel that it is more important that they do. I've read that it helps. They could still get the BF but it may not kill them. I really don't want to think about that, but feel that I must for their sakes. So, don't forget..when you are out there prepping..you might want to add that vaccine to your list to things to do. Take care of yourselves. Peace. |

I have seen actual changes.....and i grocery shop a LOT. mostly what everyone else has mentioned.....empty shelves, or sales on canned goods....lots of people buying bulk bottled water and food. ill go to sams club or BJs and both my hubby and i have been spooked by what we see......i believe theres plenty of people around MA and RI prepping...a local paper polled 70% of people taking BF seriously, but this area is imbued with so many people in the medical profession.....we live near brown med school......maybe thats why?
im confused TA you say: Face it. We are very different, a special breed of human beings that still retain a greater percentage of survival instinct and intelligence enough to cut through the crap and see things more clearly than others. We are special. ta.....what makes you think we're somehow special? i mean im not saying you're NOT special im sure you are!!! but i feel you are speculating a whole lot and you know what? I AM sally soccer mom! i feel lucky to have the internet for sure though....this is where my BF info comes from. i feel that many people are unprepared simply due to lack of knowledge. its like some christians who say anyone who doesnt accept jesus as their personal savior is going to hell......what about the people who've never HEARD of jesus? do they go to hell too? i do agree though for the people who have heard about BF and are being lazy......that mentality KILLS me especially adults with children who cant deal with their denial or their procrastination..... my 2cents |

And what a good 2 cents it was too. I agree. In fact, I have to fight myself ..from getting started and getting on my soap box. I work in the court system, and well..need I say more? My faith in parents taking good care of their children has taken a beating. Then to hear or see people knowledgable about BF. not doing what they should be to protect their innocent children. Okay..I am stopping right there. I could go on and on. Sorry. It is maddening. Other prep items..goodies (okay healthy snacks) for the kiddos! Take care of yourselves. Peace. |

Oh, and on being special.. WE all must know it, at least a little bit, deep down inside. I, for one, used to be called WEIRD by my friends in high school. I knew that they meant it jokingly and not to hurt my feelings, but I always took it as a compliment, anyway..no matter what. Just meant to me that I was an individual..with my own mind and my own ideas. Be proud, People.. WE are the weird ones...not. Okay, I hung around with a bunch of dummies when I was young..what can I say? But you know what I mean..right? If you have ever been called NERD, or WEIRD, STRANGE..a BRAINIAC...CRAZY more lately..and numerous others.. You know WHO you are. People tend to lable things (people) that they do not understand. THEREFORE, WE ARE SPECIAL. Embrace it. |

Could it be that I'm special?..Not too likely, me thinks.
I'm just extremely blessed, is all. This afternoon, my DH & I went to the clinic to get our pnemonia vac. & the receptionist out front told us that they were all out of it. I was upset because a nurse from the clinic had just been in to the animal hosp. where I work & told me that they still had quite a bit of it. Just as we were about to leave, the receptionist came running out & asked, "Hey, are you Peggy?" Surprised, I answered, "Yes". "Well come on back, Sandy says she'll help you then." (I hardly know Sandy at all.) DH & I happily received our shots & afterwards, I asked Sandy why we were told they were out. She said it was because they were trying to save the vacc. for the elderly & the infirm, not the healthy. I'm not all that elderly (40ish) or ill (in spite of chest pains last Sat.), so I guess I must just plain be special!!! God help us all... Peggy in MN |

Kelly: My teenager says, "Don't tell people you are stocking up for BF!!" Then he keeps raiding the stash and taking the good stuff! I am only buying things I normally buy but more of it and he has figured out I have extra goodies stocked and keeps stealing the goodies. :>( Darned kids! I am personally amazed that I am not having the same issues..but of course, I locked up the goodies. LOL. Didn't buy that many to begin with because I thought that I would also be making a last minute trip out. I am hoping not, but you never know. Hard to keep kids away from the "GOOD STUFF." LOL. My daughter kept drinking the gator-aide. So, I bought a good amount in pouches..the dry stuff. She wants nothing to do with that..since she would have to mix it up herself. Kids can be so funny and cute sometimes..and then there are those other times. My kids are not telling either. In fact, one of my daughter's friends came over one day..and we had stuff all over the kitchen table. She didn't say anything about it, but her eye got really big. So, the kids and I discussed it and we decided that if she asked about what was going on..we would say that we were getting things together for charity. Hate to tell fibs but .. her parents would be the first ones down here knocking on our door, I'm sorry to say. They have burned many bridges in our neighborhood. Anyway, we got things put away..hidden from sight pretty quick. I feel bad for the little girl, but.. What's a person to do? Take care of yourselves. Peace to all.

I got the eggs from Dillons , You must special order them from the manager of the store. You have to do this right, they got some from albertsons and I also got egg whites. I also got some very interesting looks from the the manager... he has no clue as to the preps. We do need to get another 35 gallon water tank.
