Hello friends and thank you for taking the time to look at my post. I have a simple question to ask. Should I be going to work during this pandemic. I live in the UK where a lock down is in force. Only workers who are classes as essential are permitted to work. I am one of those workers. I work on a waste water treatment works(sewage works). I accept that this is an essential service but here is my worry..... I have chrons disease and take 2 forms if immune system suppressant. The NHS in the UK class me as medium risk so am classed OK to work. This is fine by me but I care for my elderly mum who is 87. She lives with me and is on total lock down. She will only get covid 19 if I become infected and give it to her is my way of thinking. I am fastidious about hygiene but I have to prep mums meals etc . I am terrified I will end up infecting my mum should i get the virus. I apologies if this is not the sort of question to ask on this forum but these are worrying times. Thanks again for looking and STAY SAFE

STAY SAFE

You are in an unenviable position, ckes101.  I understand from friends over in the UK that NIH classifications are rather funky erring on the side of minimizing conditions.  I don't know the answer, but I'd certainly be investigating the leave of absence policies!

In your shoes, I would refuse to work, but I am about to turn 60 and reasonably financially safe.  It might not be so easy if your finances are not stable.  You don't say how old you are, ckes101.  Crones is not (to my knowledge) a particular risk factor, but immunosuppressants are.  And so is age.

If you are forced to continue work, can you isolate yourself from your mum? (two halves to the house and a loo in both)  Because this damn bug is probably transmitted fecal-orally, I would think your job extra risky.

I believe our government has advice available on its website and the BBC answers questions on its text service of 61124 during the Victoria Derbyshire programme (BBC News 24, 10 - 11 am weekdays).  Even the medical advice line 111 might have some specific information available if you can fight your way through the queue.

Believe it or not, your questions need to be far more specific, for a more specific answer.  Keep coming back until you know what you are doing.  We will all try to help.  Some of the answers will be: "We don't know." and others will only offer hard choices, but we will try.

His lips or pen are moving.
