This is a region I do not know too much about, so I am wondering what sort of fault lines will emerge in the various countries that have been hit hardest by Corvid-18.  That is, will they have a chance of breaking apart into various regions etc?

Anyway, according to https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries when ranking countries by deaths per million population (the final column is the rise in deaths/million since the beginning of the month), the worst hit countries in the Americas  are:-

8. Peru       546       + 274

9. Chile      472       + 180

[11 USA     451        +  69 ]

12. Brazil    407       + 138

16. Mexico   336     +  127

17. Ecuador 312      +   58

18. Panama  295     + 160

25. Bolivia    217      + 127

The recent and substantial rise this month in number of deaths must be putting a lot of strain on the various countries that are reporting (eg Venezuela seems to be vastly under reporting).  Given this strain, will the governments of these countries hold?

I realise that with under-testing the strain on these countries must be greater than the figures above suggest.

The logging and mining companies must be rubbing their hands in glee.....

This is going decimate the native populations

Excuse me for being cynical.....

DJ alluded to same in his post.........

Was it preventable?

Maybe not....

but letting it rip has benefits for some....

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/escobar-brazils-money-laundering-scandal-hell-no-one-wants-talk-about exploiting greed on the Latin American elite made most governments US puppets. Income inequality is far worse in Latin America (and a lot of places) then even in the US.

Brazil has a large black population-from a slave history. Most other-spanish speaking countries do not have a slave-history as bad as that of Brazil. Most of them have native Indian tribes to exploit.

One remarkable note on the Indian tribe in Brazil now seeing lots of infections-they live very, very isolated in the Amazone rain forest. How did they get infected with Covid19 ? Most likely due to illegal trade in wood-cutting down the rain forest did get a boost under the neo-fascist bolsenero. Also transforming the land into agriculture by small farmers (to have to pay to land owners showing up after the act) did spread the virus.

Most people in Latin America are poor-no good public healthcare (because the US does see that as "socialist"-kill leaders that try to go that way). Also most of them did see civil war like conditions in the past, mixed often with drugs trade.

The US is supporting the rich elite for decades, even in mass murder of Indians, socialists etc. At best "peace is fragile" land reforms often go very difficult.

Brazil did develop its own air-industry, car makers did have factories in Brazil, Mexico. These industries will be the first to suffer from impolding global demand. The (US government paid) Boeing factory is running out of space to park their new Boeings, India and China are entering the global car market. Since Eur-Asia is the main global market with over 5 billion consumers Latin America may end up in a corner. They can profit from the US-China trade war. Soy beans export to China is increasing.

On the other side China is investing in a.o. Venezuela oil industry. Also providing help in dealing with the Covid cases in a.o. Peru.

Last year Russia did fly two bombers to Venezuela, Iran and Venezuela are allies. Latin America is becoming a battle field between the US and Russia-Iran-China.

The corona-crisis is weakening the poor countries even further. The social stratification-a small elite and a large group of poor people will cause further social unrest. Both the US/EU and Russia-Iran-China are willing to use "new oppertunities".

Maybe a reminder https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War kicked out the Spanish colonizers out of Cuba, Peurto Rico in 1898-to be replaced by a US elite-colonization. The UK still has "dominions" and influence-from British Guyana, Belize, Bahama's to Canada. In Argentina there is a major British minority. French Guyana is used by the European Space Agency. Denmark did sell the Virgin Islands to the US, we-NL-did give up Surinam-in 1975 for political reasons but still have Curacou, Aruba, Dutch part of Sint Maarten (other part is French), Saba etc. The colonial history is just around the corner.

Independence often did only change dependency. https://southfront.org/bolivia-post-coup-regime-postpones-elections-again-social-movements-call-for-mass-mobilization/ DJ-The US is increasing its grip on Latin America. China is very "interested in oppertunities". https://southfront.org/growing-crescent-of-political-and-economic-instability-in-south-america/

Mass demonstrations during a pandemic worsens the situation. Problem for many poor is "they will die anyway". No work=no food. The economy collapsed, exports decreased. Governments working for general interest have been replaced by the old elite (often of Spanish, western origin).

Replacing US exploitation by Chinese exploitation does not improve much for those (often over 90%) poor. Covid19 has all the room to infect and spread (and mutate).

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
