Oh wow thanks! Well, I am in 8th grade. My main focus on the report is: History- The Spanish Flue details and what not. Where it is so far- Symptoms Importance and Precautions I noticed that most people in my area have no idea what the Avian Flu is, how important it is, and how it will effect them! So i would say the main focus is how it will effect everyone and why it is so important.
I have the same information up on the other thread, so sorry for the repeat! and Mahshadin, those sites are great thanks so much! Thanks! Steph

Steph, Well you've picked a whopper of a topic! How long is your research paper supposed to be? It's currently in Southeast Asia, the Asian continent, the European continent, the Middle East and now the African continent. That leaves North & South America, Antarctica, and the Australian continent officially free of H5N1 (Bird Flu). India and China, two of the effected countries comprise 40% of the world's population, each having just of a billion citizens. I would like to suggest that you use the official name and not the popular name. Avian Influenza H5N1 is the official name, Bird Flu is the popular name. Right now H5N1 does not infect people easily and one person can't easily give it to another person. We are lucky, because if it ever acquires the ability to go from one person to another ( called Human-to-human transmission) it will be a serious situation that will require very special reactions from people and all the world's governments. Every government in the world is trying to put things in place to meet the challenge of a possible pandemic of influenza. A pandemic being an epidemic that effects the entire world. No place will be free from illness, it will just be a matter of how fast the germs get there. Well, I gave us a good starting point... perhaps you can jump in with any questions you have. I want you to know that sometimes pandemic issues are confusing, even for college educated people. And sometimes it can be scary, even for parents and grandparents. If you read something that frightens you please talk to one of your parents about it, and we will be happy to talk to you too. I would also like to suggest that you have one of your parents come to the forum with you so that we can introduce ourselves properly. I look forward to helping you and I know others here are as well. |

Your right some of the pictures i was looking at earlier where pretty gross, but when i choose this topic it was something I was expecting. Also, I am thinking about maybe going into the medical carreer but I still am not sure. Well my teacher told me the report can be as long as needed but I'm thinking 50 pages (wich woudl be hard) is a lot, so it just depends on how much i get. Also, my dad has visited this site many times, but i'll be sure to show him what great help you are!
I do have one main question though. My dad tell me that the virus is sensitive to heat. I live in a very hot area, and my dad says it might never get to us. Although, i know he isn't a doctor and for seem reason i dont' see his line in reasoning (and i don't think its true). Also, my peers tell me the same thing my dad does, do you have any ideas what to say to them?

Yes, the virus is killed by heat. Dry hear or wet heat (boiling) but the kind of heat that kills virus easily is much hotter than even a desert. You would need an oven, microwave or boiling water to be sure to kill the virus. But your dad is right in that the virus survives LONGER the colder it is, and if it's also wet, well that's all the better. 50 pages is a long paper, I'm impressed! But there's a lot of information available so you should have an easy time finding it. One place I would like to suggest is the Flu FAQ's room on this forum. There is a thread called "User friendly Explanation of Flu". Read that, there's some really good information. And when your dad finds it convenient please have him come on and introduce himself as Steph's dad and we can introduce ourselves to him. |

Hockeybunny.... Hi, welcome aboard! What course level are you working on? If it's the same general level as Steph's we might look at keeping the information together.... if it's above 9th we might want to do a separate thread for Hockey's Research paper. Please let us know. |

Steph, I think if you credit the board in general for our original posts that should be fine, but if you would like to credit an individual poster that would be wonderful too. But, if you use anything that we have posted from another source you must site that in your paper, giving credit to the original source. IE: The New York Times, The CDC, WHO, CNN, etc. |

Ok thats great! Another question, As i read and learn more about this Avian Flu, the more i think its a really important. Though i don't see anything on the news (like the tv) Is there any specific reason why? |

There are two reasons for that (in my opinion). First: It has infected less than 200 people around the world. It is almost totally only infecting birds right now. So people just aren't that worried about it. That will change of course if it becomes a virus that can easily infect people in the way I explained above. Two: Chickens are the major victims of H5N1. Chickens are ugly birds. They just don't evoke a lot of sympathy or heartbreak from people the way an Eagle or Robin or Hummingbird would. If people were more concerned the news would be more extensive. Our news media is a business. They want to give the people what they want. Right now, people just aren't that interested. I sure wish they were of course. But, I don't own a news channel so my opinion doesn't count much. |

Hi Dan.car and Steph, As far as siting...there are two academic types MLA : http://kclibrary.nhmccd.edu/mlastyle.htm and APA style (this link has a link to electronic siting): http://www.gv.psu.edu/foweb/lib/gvweblinks/apa.html Check with the instructor. The APA is more universally accepted. 50 pages is really alot! Save it and add to it when you go to college to use as a graduate school thesis! -K |

for info on the 1918 flu- check out the book The Great Influenza by John M. Berry. You could use this book for quotes. It is about the 1918 flu, but also has some info on the current avian flu. The book The Bird Flu Pandemic by Dr. Jeffrey Greene is an excellent reference book regarding the current avian flu. It also gives some info on the past pandemic flu strains. However it is a new Feb.2006 release book. So, I hope you can find it in a library. I ordered both copies from Barnes and Noble. Good luck on your paper.

Steph, Thanks for the correction...you just saved 70 college freshmen from experiencing a bad easter break! They were going to get an addition to an existing research paper tomorrow. 9 pgs is more like it. Save the paper anyway. -K |

Hi Steph
I'm in UK and it's a ;ot closer to us than you at the moment. Anyway I thought it might be useful to listen to some background discussions. I posted some podcasts on a thread. Just search the forum for 'podcast' and it should appear. There's a lot of background info contained in them relating to the current outbreaks. Hope that helps |

hehe yea pebbles i guess they are very proud! And rowee thanks for that sight i used a couple things in there, (but that picture is just gross!) Well, my teacher just told me today that i need direct qotes from people, so if any of you guys have anything to say about some of your fears, plans, or anything really I would love to use that. For the sitation of your quote, in most cases, i would need your last name but because of your privacy issues or what not i can use your screen name! Pretty Simple? Thanks! Steph |
