Bump.
IMHO, this bears watching more than any of the other reports I've seen recently. The reason for the "watch this" gut feeling here is the extreme high fever and the fact that they are calling it influenza. Hopefully they'll type the flu and announce more later. Maybe some of our experts can try to dig up more info, as well. This is EXACTLY the sort of reporting we'll see if a pandemic explodes. And we'll know in very short order if that's the case. (Particularly in south africa, gads. Rather an internationally well connected country.) However, that DOES NOT mean this is pandemic flu taking off. It just means that they're having an outbreak of flu. And it's winter there and this is an area with a lot of immunocompromised people, for a variety of reasons. This could very well be seasonal flu. But ... IMHO ... this one bears closer scrutiny than any of the other news stories I've seen in the last several months, including small clusters in Indonesia and various outbreaks here and there of mystery diseases that don't fit typical flu symptoms. |
