Usually the left is more rude. I can't apply that generalisation to Trump though. He is the rudest leader ever. I have to argue with both of you Mommy and Witchy, The left wing will attack Trump whatever he does. The right would be just the same if the tables were turned. That is just the way things are and why politicians need hides like a rhino. (Trump himself is an attack force on legs. If there were no opposition he would probably attack himself.) As a centrist, I don't think Trump did all that well at the start, and before the current crisis, gutting the CDC was desperately short sighted. But our politicians over here have done far worse. They started with a better understanding, but failed to keep up as the situation changed. They had a theory and they have stuck to it despite massive accumulating evidence to the contrary and desperate protestations from the WHO. A huge group of scientists petitioned them to change tack, which fell on deaf ears. Trump and co, on the other hand, seem to be learning as they go along and are making up for their poor start. I think Trump a disaster of a human being, but I would rather have him than the guy I actually voted for. |

I could say a lot to that FluMom... but I won't. It would only cause an argument that's not needed here. |

You're not arguing with me. That's exactly my point and you underscored it nicely. It would be just the same if the tables were turned. |

I have good friends who work at the CDC in Atlanta, and I don't defend their ineptness during this pandemic. There were proven COVID-19 PCR tests developed by South Korea and others, and we could have simply obtained these from WHO. However, the CDC was fighting for turf, and they insisted on developing their own tests for the USA. This is the politics of public health, which I know well. They fail much, much more than they succeed in my opinion. That being said, Trump has completely failed as a national leader. He gave himself a "10," I'd give him a "10 out of 100" for his performance. BTW, I'm a lifelong Republican who voted against Trump. I'll be happy to do it again and watch him go to Rikers Prison in NY after his only term is up. |

The thread has been hijacked its about the pandemic and this pandemic has a death rate of 3.5% a pandemic of H5N1 has a death rate of 60% a pandemic of H7N9 has a death rate of 60% So 3.5% is small potatoes Having said that it is as bad as the Spanish Flu - so it is no joke by any means So stop the politics - we are all in the same boat |

I think Italy is showing that the death rate is far higher when the health care system is overwhelmed. Aren't they running at a CFR of nearly 8% because they simply can't help everyone? |

I don't really think you can compare the statistics anymore. The testing discrepancies are just too great at this point. If Italy started testing at the rate SK has tested, I'm sure the numbers would become much closer. That said, once the health system is overwhelmed, that mortality rate is bound to increase. |

Our country has tested 35000 people, our Government called it a Pandemic in January.... Here in Perth western Australia we have cases, but all are Australians returning,we in Perth have no p2p transmission, I think America is going to see a huge upturn in numbers Because of the governments slow reaction, calling it a Democratic PLOT,and that's what they did you cannot defend what is out there on tape, that's what happend, wear it get over it, and for pity's sake MOVE ON THE BLAME game will be played out in your Elections Again we have tested 35000,not bad for a small country..... USA 5K last I heard..... Wake up |

I am aware of the weakness of the statistics we are getting, but I am still entering the WHO data into a database system I wrote. As I enter data it is clear that many countries are under-testing. This under-testing will make any CFR higher than it should be. Early on we saw the problem with China where even testing of deaths was no done and so they died of "pneumonia" rather than Corvid-19. Also the fact that local crematoriums were running day and night and they had to bring in mobile ones indicated a death rate much much higher than reported. In this mess we need to find the best data. The cruise ship The Diamond Princess gives one good case study, with about 19% infected and a CFR of nearly 1. [I noticed that in the latest WHO report the number of cases went up so infections are still being found.] Other places that show interesting data are the small (island) states. St Marino [a micro-state in North Italy] is showing over 3 000 cases per million population compared with Italy's 400 cases per million]., but then St Marino is showing a CFR rate of 5.4%. - - - - This is not in and of itself the "slate wiper" that some have been prepping against. However, I think the death rates will be much higher than the strict CFR as it will cause other problems - not least being overwhelming hospitals so other patients who might have been saved die because the medical profession can not give them the care they would have received. Other examples of Corona-related deaths: In China one father was quarantined and his handicapped son left to starve at home. In Italy there was a prison riot over the withdrawal of visiting in which 6 in-mates died. If society holds then these "secondary" deaths might be small, but if society does not manage this well then I am afraid that the secondary deaths might outweigh those from the SARS-CoV2 virus.

Exactly my fears. For our international members, we Yanks live in a country awash with very powerful firearms (I own a bunch myself), and I cringe at what may happen when hospitals are overloaded and patients are turned away for lack of capacity. Also, just the Internet rumor of national quarantine action by the US Government sent many to their gun safes to load their AR-15s. My own calculations and those of the Brits show that we may endure 2 million mortalities from COVID-19 in the US before this is done, and this virus will come back to visit time and again, as it is a novel virus that will likely join the mix of seasonal flu and other pulmonary diseases. Our government really screwed up by not learning its lesson from SARS and making coronavirus therapy a number one priority. Even with the MERS experience, we just let things slide. This pandemic is karma. Be safe, stay at home and keep your profile low. |

Maybe we could make new forum rules? A) we are only allowed to sling mud at our own governments! So - I can blast Trudeau for a couple months late response but can't comment on US, or Australian or Scotlands' etc governments or B) All political bashing stays under the POLITICS heading so that new members coming here aren't turned off by a bunch of people bickering, instead of finding us the useful resource we are! I know I have noted a couple threads in past that got too political and just never read them - but that's not really a good way to do this and not good for new people AT ALL!!! C) in following B - any thread that gets hijacked by politics like this one has - either gets moves to political heading, gets deleted, or ignorant &/or political comments get deleted Just my 2 cents... I will add this thread to my 'don't go there list'... |

If gets too bad, don’t worry - the mods will step in. We’ve had far nastier fights over the years (which I will admit to having been part of before) and we survived. Restricting people to only commenting on their own government is not the kind of censorship you’ll see here, although that’s not the first time it’s been suggested. Remember that many of our leaders make decisions that have wider ranging implications, and that makes them fair game to citizens of other countries that might be feeling the effect. We’re doing exactly the same when we criticize the Chinese government if we don’t live there.

Population of UK 67,886,011 million, tested as of March 15 40,279 +5Kx2 50,279= .000074% total % of population tested Population of Washington state 7.4 million, tested as of March 17th 14,129 =.19% total % of population tested Well not quite a appropriate parallel it seems, when the facts and numbers come into play. |

And "my agenda" is accurate and factual information relating to this virus, as my posting and thread history clearly shows, not the political spin of it in the US as others seem to inject into the conversation on a regular basis. |

Seriously, in a country of 320 million people you're splitting hairs over someone saying that you've only tested 5000 people when in actual fact it's 12,000? It's not even a drop in the bucket. 12,000 out of 320 million - wow your government's really got it covered!! |

It seems to me that it's mainly the new members on here who are throwing their toys out of the pram at the smallest possible thing. They seem to be looking for any reason, no matter how small, to take offense. Perhaps it's stress, or fear, or a need to feel they are a big fish in small pond. Who knows? And frankly, who cares? We've got bigger things to worry about at the moment than a few ill informed loud mouths. |

Your are right AI, but I also said: ....................... ' And we know we are not testing enough! This is what I've been moaning about for weeks. My government is not testing anywhere near enough! They have already decided the containment phase is over. This will kill thousands more than would have died otherwise. |
