Department of Health fears pandemic will hit UK

Government officials have issued tips to help hospitality staff deal with a potential flu pandemic.

Experts fear that a worldwide outbreak of the virus will emerge from bird flu mixing with human flu and have warned staff at pubs and hotels to be prepared.

The Department of Health document states: Everyone will be involved in the fight against pandemic influenza in terms of managing the impact it will have on society and preventing further spread of the infection.

This guidance explains what managers and staff in the hospitality industry can do to protect themselves and their families, their colleagues and their guests, to prevent the spread of flu.

The guidance says that pubs and hotels may need to contact local GPs on behalf of guests who become ill, and expects that "most guests with flu during a pandemic" will be able to remain on the premises.

Tips include:

• Wearing surgical masks if within a metre of an infected customer

• Checking reports of staff illness at the start of every day

• Cleaning staff to wear gloves and aprons

• Rooms should be cleaned thoroughly, including paying extra attention to hard surfaces, door handles and light switches.

The report adds: If a flu pandemic starts, it will eventually affect the UK.

Currently all services and organisations are developing contingency plans in order to maintain essential services in the event that large numbers of people become ill.
