Like the song goes, too much, too little, too late.....but we shall see.
Dennis, Mary and Tech, thank you for the information. I feel for the people there. They have been on financial hard times with the mortgage crisis as well (along with several other Slavic countries) and they're broke more than we are I think.Looks like they did the right thing to shut down. The situation sounds scary. We shall see what WHO finds when they go there today. |

Yes I'm hoping it didn't mutate. I'll keep digging and translating. The Temperature is around 32-36F degrees. That's the perfect temp to cause very high virulence. http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/UKOO.html |

I'm afraid that story you found tech regarding the deaths of the doctors "could" tell the tale, and it also probably means that the total number of deaths is about to rise significantly as the actual number may be somewhat unreported.

7,000 have been hospitalized. Similar to what we saw in Mexico, around .03% - 04% hospitalizations. With the temps lowering at the same time, this time around could get a little rough.

Hi Albert...
Yushchenko addresses nation, journalists about flu epidemic Today at 08:23 Obviously we are facing a difficult situation and today the effective assessment, accurate information on the sickness rate in not only the three regions but in the whole of Ukraine is an important issue. I have instructed the Minister for Health to develop a unified database, to prepare the official statistics, which would in real time inform primarily the Ministry of Health, the Prime Minister and the Government on the situation with the epidemic in all regions of Ukraine. Unfortunately there was no such database before today. We need to conduct the cumulative, effective monitoring. We have a Flu Center, which employs only one person. My request of May to the Prime Minister to allocate funds to establish a lab, to "arm" us in the situation, when the world is smitten by the epidemic of this flu, to date has not been answered. That is why only one person is working in the Flu Center. This is the center, which is supposed to conduct monitoring in whole of Ukraine, the center, which operates under the auspices of the Ministry for Health and of the Government. I have addressed the Prime Minister with the request to urgently allocate appropriate funds - 50 million hryvnyas for the center to function. So, the first question is the fullness of the information and establishment of full control over spreading of respiratory desists over the territory of Ukraine, the regime of real informing of the public per region and the country as the whole. Separately I have instructed Regional Administrations to established info-centers for the population of every region to avoid panic or disinformation. Question number two, which I think is the result of failures in the question number one, particularly the failure to establish the Flu Center, is determining the type of the virus. Today only one thing pulls the Health Ministry and effective system of actions back – determining the type of the virus. In many cases this question remains unanswered. There are even experts, who suppose it is another modified virus - the differentiated virus between the "bird flu" and the "pig flu". But only the operative analysis would answer that. The flu, which the risk group is suffering from, should be identified. Yesterday I have instructed the Ministry of Health to formulate and present to the meeting of the Government a real action plan, which the entire government team, all local authorities and local government are to be guided by. That means the Ministry should review the national pandemic plan and, taking into account current challenges, to bind it to specific territories and Ukraine in general. The Health Ministry should clearly formulate mandatory recommendations that should guide the citizens of Ukraine, specialists and experts. Further – be it premises restrictions, or the introduction of quarantine restrictions, or preventive measures, or vaccination, or isolation - it should be a part of a single national Ukrainian plan, which I hope I will hear at today's extraordinary session of the NSDC dedicated to the issue. The plan should include a set of quarantine measures and I will get an expert opinion on the measures already undertaken by the Government. Whether they are sufficient, or whether the process should be developed and extended. The measures we are to apply at the border, the procedure of citizens’ and transport movement between the areas. The supervision over full provision of the population with remedies. And if something is missing, buying and allocating it to the appropriate health care facilities. Providing medical departments with the number of beds necessary in case of the worst possible scenarios. I have instructed the Minister of Defense to mobilize all operational mobile hospitals so they could be deployed tomorrow in the areas, where they are needed the most. The supply of medicines that we currently have allows us to provide help to all those in need. I have addressed international institutions and partner countries so if the situation develops in such a manner and with such dynamics that it would threaten our capabilities, we will certainly get the required amount of drugs needed for treatment and prevention. At present the required number of medicines has been distributed to the affected people - this is the latest report of the Health Minister. I am sure we will be able to deal with this disaster. I would like to separately address you, dear journalists, because objective and responsible information, I think, helps the country and specialists to deal with this problem. So I ask you to refrain from agitating the country with unverified information and from using the information of dubious nature and the information that is untrue. More than ever before we now must be Ukrainians, help the nation with full responsibility to meet this problem, have a single national plan, support each other. Obviously, in the next couple of days we will assess why the epidemic was more acute in Ukraine than in any other country of European community. Ukraine Mystery Outbreak Sparks WHO Concern as Disease Spreads
www.bloomberg.com... Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The World Health Organization sent a team of experts to Ukraine today to investigate an outbreak of respiratory disease that’s sickened a quarter of a million people and left pharmacies without masks or flu remedies. A group of epidemiologists, physicians, laboratory technicians and communications advisers is scheduled to arrive tonight in Kiev, Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman in Geneva, said in a telephone interview today. Ukraine faces an outbreak of flu-like illness that’s killed at least 67 people and infected 255,000, according to the country’s first deputy health minister Vasyl Lazoryshynets. About 22 patients tested positive for swine flu, Lazoryshynets said. It’s “difficult to tell” whether the pandemic H1N1 virus is responsible for all the cases, according to Hartl. “There are a lot of unknowns,” he said. The crew of experts will collect samples from patients and send them to the WHO’s influenza collaborating center in London for diagnosis. The WHO may have more information on Nov. 4, Hartl said. |

What really got me worried is that they are closing down schools, theaters, etc.....similar to what Mexico did. And Mexico did this because they had no idea with what they were dealing with...the virulence of the virus that was going around. Could we be under a similar circumstance in Ukraine? Because if it's the "same" virus that is here in the states, why close everything down...unless of course it is that the US has underreacted.....makes me wonder...

I just read some interesting stuff when I googled it. They are closing everything for 3 weeks and may even not have the soccer championship thing there. Seems extreme to me unless we are dealing with something different from the regular swine flu....what do you all think? 3 weeks? wow...all public events cancelled pretty much. that is insane!

Roni either they want to take away the attention from the dire economic situation in that country, or they have a "new strain" that is more virulent, or they have the same strain as ours and are overreacting, or we here in the states are underreacting. But now Bulgaria just declared a swine flu epidemic and they too are closing...don't know how long...and to what extent as I skimmed through the article and haven't got a chance right now to post it.

Southeast Bulgaria declared Monday a swine flu epidemic over the rising number of people infected with the A(H1N1)
The Another southeast district, Yambol, has also declared a flu “vacation” for the schools but until November 9. The local medical authorities are deciding later on Monday whether to declare an all-out epidemic as in the neighboring Burgas District. The same decision is due in the Gabrovo District in Central Bulgaria. Gabrovo and the Varna District have the largest numbers of infected people with the A(H1N1) virus. Some of the municipalities there already have 175 infected people per 10 000, whereas epidemic is declared at 180 sick per 10 000. The northeast District of Targovishte declared swine flu epidemic on October 30, 2009; the alert there will last until November 6. Tags: swine flu, epidemic |

Loribearme and Glow, what you all are talking doing is admiral and very nice. But if you are trying to send over the counter medications to the Ukraine or to Russia,it will never make it to the every day people that need it. The people in positions of power will intercept it and use it themselves or give it to the police and the Army.If anything that you send that might help some one, actually gets into everyday peoples hands,it will be because they will pay the people in charge a very large price for it. That part of the world is not like this part of the world.Johnray1

I know that when my daughter had a Russian pen pal, we tried to send trinkets to her in the mail and she never reciieved them. Just as we would do, the gov. will open and inspect the pkg. Relations are not so good right now, how would they know or how would we know what could be being sent in the mail.
The very fact that they have no money no health dept. nothing available is more then likely what is causing this, this is or can be a mild disease if you have things like hot water, heat, or air conditioning, otc meds, prescription meds and Dr.s who can see you, hopsitals with state of the art equipment. We have discussed in here many times, that the USA more then likely the most prepared nation, is going to fall way short in a bad enough pandemic. To less fortunate countries, this or any bad virus is going to have many casualties. It is fine to say that you can limit the exposure if you wash your hands or use hand sanitizer and cover your cough, but if there is not way to accomplish hand washing and sanitizing, then you are in a heap of trouble.
None the less WHO can not assume that with a current novel virus so they mjust send a team anywhere where a lot of people are getting sick. The world would be outaged if they did not. It could be a mutation. I doubt it. Anytime we hear this type of story we need to look at the country and their wealth. If this happens in Austrailia, Great Britan, the USA, Canada, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, we need to run for the hills. If it is more third world we need to be on the watch and not panic.
Here is a nice example btw of gov. run health care. Your poor, you have none period, no tax dollars to pay for it. Could that happen here?? You bet it could, when the soviet union fell they all became separate countries, if our economy fails and the states become more like separate countries, and you live in Michigan your in deep trouble. Think about it.

alittle tidbit i found......
thanks to the writer Ukraine in panic over swine flu; WHO team visits By YANA SEDOVA and SIMON SHUSTER Associated Press Writers < ="" ="text/"> KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine is in a panic about swine flu, with officials closing schools, imposing travel restrictions and limiting public gatherings. Yet many suspect that politics, not health issues, are behind the uproar. The World Health Organization said Monday there is no evidence that Ukraine's outbreak is particularly severe, leading some political analysts to say Ukraine's politicians are using the swine flu scare to earn political points ahead of the country's presidential election in January. < ="" ="http://alt.coxnewsweb.com/coxnet/js/daytonbreadcrumbtable.js" ="text/"> "Right now all the candidates are weighing their political options, looking around for a theme, and this is a very hot topic right now. The panic is there, and they are acting on it," said Konstantin Bondarenko, director of the Gorshenin Institute, a political think tank. On Monday, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko dramatically met a Swiss shipment of anti-viral drugs at the Kiev airport. Last week, her main rival, President Viktor Yushchenko, said 48 people had died of flu and thousands were infected. The health minister, Vasyl Knyazevich, warned on Friday that nationwide quarantines could be imposed as the virus is spreading "extremely fast." On Monday, his ministry said 67 people have died of flu, but it did not specify how many of deaths were related to swine flu. In any case, that is a tiny number in a country like Ukraine, which has a population of 40 million. Worldwide, outbreaks of the regular seasonal flu claim 50,000 lives each year. At the government's request, the World Health Organization has sent a team to help Ukraine deal with the outbreak. "But this is not an indication that the situation is severe," said WHO spokeswoman Liuba Negru. "The information we have gotten (from the government), we have to double-check it and make sure it is real evidence-based information." Bondarenko said Tymoshenko has the most to lose from public sentiment over the outbreak, as state health officials answer to her. "This is the supply that will reliably protect Ukraine," Tymoshenko said of the shipment of 650,000 doses of Tamiflu, ITAR-Tass news agency reported. Her government plans to increase its hoard of the drug with another 300,000 doses, she added. The January election is a pivotal vote which could overturn the 2004 Orange Revolution that swept a pro-Western government to power. Viktor Yanukovych, the Regions' Party candidate for the presidency, has not yet commented on the swine flu uproar. Yanukovych, who was beaten in 2005 by Yushchenko, is leading in the polls with a platform that emphasizes closer ties with Russia. During the past five years of Yushchenko's presidency, relations with Moscow reached historic lows. Yushchenko's ratings have fallen to single digits in the wake of the economic crisis, which hit Ukraine hard, and years of political gridlock with Tymoshenko. ___ Associated Press writer Simon Shuster reported from Moscow. |

sorry if a dupe -
SHOCK! Epidemic of pneumonic plague in Ukraine?
Ministry of Health has not established the exact diagnosis of the epidemic disease in the western regions of Ukraine. Health Minister Vasyl Knyazevich has given information about spread of diseases in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions today at the meeting of Cabinet of Ministers.
According to the Minister, the World Health Organization is ready to render assistance to Ukrainian experts and the Ministry of Health in order to establish the cause of death and development of disease flu in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions.
"We are working at receiving the vaccine against influenza A (H1N1) also", - said Vasily Knyazevich and asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to render assistance.
Answering question of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko about the definition of the specific nature of the disease, the head of the Ministry of Health said: "The nature of infections is viral one. But at the moment it is not defined, is it the Californian influenza H1N1, or it is our seasonal influenza. To date, there is no precise diagnosis."
In turn, First Deputy Prime Minister Olexander Turchynov urged "not to slow in the matter, and hold a conference tomorrow," and noted that preliminary information about the nature of infections will be received tonight.
According to the Minister of Health, to date, 12 adults have died in the Ternopil Region. "There are problems, people of working age 20-45 years are sick, there is a problem with pregnant women (we have the death in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil Regions), 17 patients remain in the grave condition, 4 of them have artificial pulmonary ventilation", - said Vasily Knyazevych.
According to the Minister, leading international experts, particularly from Russia and Europe, will be involving into establishing the diagnosis.
He noted that the Ivano-Frankivsk region reached the epidemic threshold. 6 deaths are registered there which are related to this situation. Also, the Minister of Health noted that the climatic and temperature conditions in the Ternopil Region did not lead to the development of disease in these regions.
In turn, Yulia Tymoshenko ordered before the end of today's meeting of the government to bring her all the data, the estimates associated with the epidemic disease as a draft form. She also ordered Oleksander Turchynov to consider the issue of informing the public through the video and broadcast that person should avoid work and study if he has signs of cold, and urgently appeal to the doctor.
In addition, Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Health to send special circulars, which contain instructions for the doctors in this situation, to all hospitals of Ukraine, and to explore the amount of necessary additional funding to counteract an outbreak of viral diseases in the western areas.
In connection with the spread of flu quarantine has been declared in schools in the Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk Regions.
04:10 p.m. Despite the fact that doctors do not state that epidemic of swine flu has started in Ukraine, the facts speak for themselves: a man died in Transcarpathia. Precisely swine flu killed him.
According to reports, a week ago the man returned from Saint Petersburg, where he was on a business trip, with symptoms of cold, but sought medical treatment only when the health condition was already critical: there were complications in the form of inflammation of the lungs and pulmonary edema.
Doctors and specialists of the Transcarpathian regional sanitary-epidemiological station previously recognized swine flu as the cause of death, but in connection with the complexity of the final laboratory tests the cause of death of the man has not yet succeeded, reports Obozrevatel.
Another patient with symptoms of swine flu has been hospitalized to regional infectious diseases hospital in Uzhhorod. The resident of Koritnyany village, Uzhhorod district recently returned from Moscow, and felt a deterioration of health. Doctors are confident due to the timely treatment the patient will recover.
Today in Uzhhorod a press conference is planned to be held involving specialists of the Office of Health and State Administration. It will be held at 03:30 a.m. in the regional center of health.
As MIGnews.com.ua correspondent has learned, a group of specialists of Transcarpathian regional sanitary-epidemiological station has left for investigation of a fatal case in Volovets village, whence the deceased comes from. Doctors say that it would be too difficult to confirm the presence of swine influenza in the region - in Ukraine there are no special methods and technical capabilities, Vitaly Logos, MIGnews.com.ua correspondent reports.
An epidemic of A/H1N1 influenza may appear in November in Ukraine, told the director of the Ukrainian Center of influenza and acute respiratory infections Olexander Hrynevich. "Most likely, it will appear when the weather deteriorates. People will be cold”,- said Hrynevich.
05:22 p.m. 21 people have died in three western regions of Ukraine, according to preliminary data, of pneumonia, ForUm reports. Swine influenza has not been found, but the final results will be known in two days, when the additional tests will be spent in London.
Olexandr Hrynevich assured that Ukrainian epidemiologists have been prepared for the epidemic of influenza A/H1N1, reports ForUm. According to him, the state has reserves of disinfection means, necessary tests to identify A/H1N1 have been purchased, places for treatment of patients have been prepared. Hrynevich suggests that an epidemic of swine flu may start soon in Ukraine.
Today, on October 29, it has become known about another case of death from pneumonia in Chernivtsi. Ministry of Health calls on all citizens if symptoms of influenza or other acute respiratory viral diseases appear, go to hospital immediately.
Due to the epidemiological situation the trip of President Victor Yushchenko to the Lviv Region may fail, Glavred cites the chief state sanitary doctor of the Lviv region Roman Pavliv as saying.
On Saturday, October 31, business trip of President of Ukraine to the Lviv Region is planned to be on the occasion of the establishment of the West Ukrainian National Republic.
Three members of Ukraine’s embassies are being checked by doctors on influenza A (H1N1), Foreign Minister Petro Poroshenko reported. "There was information that the three officials of embassies are suspected of being ill with virus A (H1N1). All necessary facilities were provided for treatment and diagnostics," - he said.
Petro Poroshenko said that the Foreign Ministry established a fund for immediate disbursement of funds for treatment in cases where the health of members of diplomatic missions of Ukraine is under threat. The Ministry is also developing mechanisms for temporary insurance for diplomats working in countries where the epidemiological threat or an emergency for their social protection are declared, Ukrainian News reported.
05:39 p.m. Doctors are calling on citizens not to vaccinate against influenza, because such vaccination in the midst of the epidemic may injure the health, coordinator of epidemic influenza in Lviv Miron Borysevich claimed at a press conference, proUA.com reports.
"When an outbreak of influenza begins, nobody is being vaccinated. From the point of view of epidemiology this can not be done because it is harmful. It may harm the patient," - he said.
At the same time, doctors advise not to communicate with people who are sick. If you have to contact with sick people, use flu masks.
A closed meeting has been held in Ivano-Frankivsk, at which participants agreed that epidemic of the so-called "pneumonic plague" is being spread throughout Ukraine. But the problem is its form is unknown, it is ATYPICAL nobody knows how to treat it.
PNEUMONIC PLAGUE has an acute course than other forms, over and is accompanied by a very high mortality rate. The incubation period of primary pneumonic plague rarely exceeds more than 1-4 days. It begins, as a rule, suddenly - with shivering, fever, headache, myalgia, weakness, nausea. The symptoms of pneumonia - cough with phlegm, chest pain, shortness of breath - usually appear on the second day of the disease. Blood spitting, growing respiratory disorders, heart failure, respiratory failure, shock are being observed. In primary pneumonic plague phlegm usually is watery or mucinous, foamy, with blood or visibly bloody.
A secondary pneumonic plague occurs as interstitial pneumonia. Phlegm is scanty and more dense and viscous than in primary pulmonary plague. It is believed that in this regard, patients are less contagious.
As a reminder, yesterday, on October 28 flu epidemic in the Ternopil Region, which had appeared a week ago, mowed down nearly 10,000 of residents. Moreover - unknown virus has already killed seven people. Ministry of Health has confirmed 20 deaths from pneumonia in Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions.

Oh yes, ops144,
I think the numbers:
A total of 2, 998 people have been hospitalized, including 1, 252 children under 14.
The overall number of patients is 106, 112, including 50, 136 children aged under 14 are just for the Lviv region of the country and not entire Ukraine.

I think the issue is flu vaccination people in Ukraine or Russia have very backward mentality when it comes to vaccinations the don’t trust the doctors or vaccines , they prefer to use holistic medicine for all their ills, the best medicine is vodka then stem room. If the virus slowly lingers in the body people just go about their business until it’s too late

What's being desccribed does sound more like pneumonic plague than H1N1 after doing some (superficial) reading on the two. From Wiki:
Onset of symptoms can occur anywhere from 24 hours to 10 days after exposure. There's overlap in the incubation period for the two diseases, which could explain confusing the two - especially if you have thousands sick with H1N1, and then a fluke patient with PP comes into the hospital and exposes a few hundred people that already have compromised immune systems from fighting flu. A Dr. misses it because they're tired and already saw 100 H1N1 cases that day, and now you have 2 bugs with similar initial symptoms moving through the same population.
<snip>
Pneumonic plague is a very aggressive infection requiring early treatment. To reduce the risk of death, antibiotics must be given within 24 hours of first symptoms.[1] Streptomycin, gentamicin, tetracyclines, and chloramphenicol are all effective against pneumonic plague.
Antibiotic treatment for seven days will protect people who have had direct, close contact with infected patients. Wearing a close-fitting surgical mask also protects against infection.[1] Without treatment, the mortality rate from pneumonic plague approaches 100%.[3] ...
The most apparent symptom of pneumonic plague is coughing, often with hemoptysis (coughing up blood). With pneumonic plague, the first signs of illness are fever, headache, weakness, and rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and sometimes bloody or watery sputum.[1] The pneumonia progresses for two to four days and may cause respiratory failure and shock. Without early treatment, patients will die, some within 24 hours. <snip>

see the map ????
the areas of radiation are not located near Minsk where the deaths were. I do not understand your point. The same with the cases in Western Ukraine and the high radiation levels to the north and E of Lviv.
What point are you trying to make?
