Sorry this is long, but there are some practical suggestions:
from a pathologist and molecular virologist Dr. James Robb, who believes that it will probably be widespread in the U.S. by March/April

Date: February 26, 2020 at 2:35:50 PM EST
Subject: What I am doing for the upcoming COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Dear Colleagues, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s). I was the first to demonstrate the number of genes the virus contained. Since then, I have kept up with the coronavirus field and its multiple clinical transfers into the human population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different animal sources.

The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable, due to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to be widespread in the US by mid to late March and April.

Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take. These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza seasons, except for the mask and gloves.:

 1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.

 2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.

 3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.

 4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.

 5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.

 6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.

 7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!

What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:

 1) Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping, using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in contact with contaminated areas.

Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average - everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs) The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.

 2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you - it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.

 3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.

 4) Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.

I, as many others do, hope that this pandemic will be reasonably contained, BUT I personally do not think it will be. Humans have never seen this  virus before and have no internal defense against it. Tremendous worldwide efforts are being made to understand the molecular and clinical virology of this virus.

Unbelievable molecular knowledge about the genomics, structure, and virulence of this virus has already been achieved. BUT, there will be NO drugs or vaccines available this year to protect us or limit the infection within us. Only symptomatic support is available.

I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful during this potentially catastrophic pandemic. You are welcome to share this email. Good luck to all of us! Jim

Well, I printed out 7 copies of that email and am sending 7 cards  out to my family members with that in it. Its really all I can do at this point. I feel like I must do something and I like the practical things and how its not very alarmist. That was (is) my Pandamic Prepardeness Project of the day today.

I keep Zinc Lozenges at school and at home.  When I feel a cold coming on I take one right away then one 2 to 3 times a day if the feeling continues.  I have had a lot of luck not getting sick using these.  I keep a bunch around my house so I do not run out.   If I get a cold I use up to 4 a day and I seem to get well faster.  I never take as a prophylactic only if and when I am getting a cold or have a cold.

This is what I needed to do this morning upon arriving at school. This is the email I sent to the district Superintendent and other parties:

A person who had been on a missionary trip in the Philippines for a month or more has returned to (my small town). On his trip home he transited through Beijing, Tokyo and Seattle. Despite my posting a number of articles on the (my small town) Community FB page regarding Covid-19 this person has not been moved to self quarantine, and has visited with two families who have a total of seven children at school. (out of a total of 20)

My four year old has severe asthma, and my wife is a type 1 diabetic. Their risk of severe consequences from becoming infected with the virus is high. Out of an abundance of caution my boys will be staying home until it is clear to me that the person who returned to (my small town) is not a carrier.

This is an opportunity to turn a problem into a solution. My boys have brought all their school materials home this morning, and will be doing classwork on the same schedule as (my small town) School. My class lesson plans are already on Google Classroom, so Joe and David are used to using that system on a daily basis. I would like to see if Joe can participate in his VTC classes via Google hangout during his VTC classes. It will help us see how doing classes from home would work in the event that the district closes schools.

I'm going to spend a lot of time on AFT with you folks, at least until the power goes out & the Internet goes down!

I'll probably put on 40 pounds from recreational eating.

Think it's refreshing being with like minded people instead of having the frustration of "it's just a flu" mentality.  I hope we are all wrong but if Albert says it is red it's red.

LOL True story: On Monday I went to make Kitchari (basmati rice with moong dal) - and I couldn't find where I put the rice!!!  Finally found the small bag I was looking for in a dresser drawer.  (Yes, I'm that tight on space).   This weekend I get it organized and write down where I put everything, THEN I'll join y'all in stress baking!

This would explain why all the flour was sold out at my local supermarket on Monday - comfort food!

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Roti or chapatis are fantastically easy to make, as are pancakes.  Pizza bases can be made with bicarbonate of soda and yoghurt to make the dough rise.  I have a breadmaker, but I don't think much of its products.  I'd rather have a box of crackers or oatcakes.

I just got off the phone with my GP who returned my call of yesterday.  I wanted her advice on two appointments I have coming up with a pulmonologist  (new... never been to this one but my neurologist suggested it).  With NY declaring a state of emergency and advising high risk to stay home I wasn't sure if I should keep those appointments.  I didn't know how necessary they were.

She said not to keep the appointments. Evidently there have been big meetings at the hospital where some procedures were structured for dealing with patient needs. Non-essential appointments should be cancelled or rescheduled at the hospital and related clinics. She took a wait and see attitude on what comes this spring. She also noted that I'm due to have my six month check up with her next month. She said "let's skip that". My vaccines are all current, checkups, bp and bloodwork have all been excellent for the last three years and I could skip a round. She extended my prescriptions another six months and if there was any problem to call the nurse and she'd advise me on what to do.

I'm glad I was pro-active about this instead of sitting and wondering.

Ok, here is my SIP plan.

First, I am going to take a nap.

Second, I am going get my jazz records out and play some Louie Armstrong.

Third, I am going to pour myself a glass of bourbon.

I might repeat this for a few hours and then go back to bed.

Then I plan to watch movies and build model kits.  Clean my shotguns and rifles and pistols.

May watch home  movies one more time...

I'm moving furniture that I have been promising myself I would do for ages.

Evenings with a dirty, wet martini and dry, clean hubby (I think I may have that the wrong way around; getting old is no fun!).

California here, also state of emergency. I have 5 IV infusions (iron) scheduled weekly for the next 5 weeks. I'm dreading going. I have anemia and need infusions each year because I don't absorb iron from my diet (thanks celiac disease!). Last year it made me feel a LOT better, and now I need more. And I still don't want to go. I will go this week, but depending on how it seems there I may cancel my future appointments. The only reason I'm going this week is that the infusion is done in my oncologists infusion center. They're usually really careful around the chemo patients. Usually. And I can wear a mask there and not stand out. A lot of the chemo patients wear masks and I'm sure they appreciate others wearing masks too. So I'll go this week, but I'm not sure about the rest of my appointments. We just had community acquired spread confirmed in my county.

Okay.. so in another thread I mentioned I'm having some angries.  Evidently someone upstairs decided to do me a solid with this grocery order.  I ordered two Idaho baking potatoes.  I got two 5lb bags of Idaho baking potatoes for the price of the two single ones I ordered.

Thanks Universe!  Now all I have to do is figure out how I'm going to store 10lbs of potatoes.  I think maybe I'll make potato soup next week...

Thanks WitchMisspelled. Even though I work from home my husband can't. He's a service technician and has to go all over Southern California from job site to job site. He sees so many people in a day. And I have so many health issues going on it it always seems like I have to go to the doctor several times a week. So sometimes I feel that it's futile to try not to catch it. But we're not going down without a fight. Still have to try not to get it.

I hope you find something to do with all those potatoes. I had a similar thing happen with instacart on beef roast. I ordered 4 lbs of chuck roast, and they brought me 4 chuck roasts (which were several pounds each!). They told me to just keep it, and only charged me for 4 lbs. Oops.

Yah!  I just looked up.  There is some controversy as to whether you can refrigerate them, but I figure the fridge is cold, dark and dry.  So that's where they'll stay until I use them up.

SoCalMom now that was some score!!!  Things like this happen to me all the time.  One time I ordered six cases of kitten food.  I got six cases of cat food they told me to keep and sent me the kitten food.  Then there was the Target debacle.  To make a long story short, I ordered three boxes of treats.  They sent me all one flavor.  They sent out the order again... THREE MORE TIMES!  I ended up with 12 1lb boxes of treats.  I was afraid to call again for fear they'd send me more!  There's more ordering foibles that always ended up in my favor... but your eyes would glass over!

They also need to breathe.  I buy them by the sack and keep them in wooden boxes in the barn.

Well I made sure and got a Hawaiian vacation in before this outbreak totally got out of hand. Had it planned well before this virus popped up and deemed the threat low right before we went so we didn't cancel and went and had a great time. Actually forgot all about the virus sometimes, well until we touched something or went out in public and continually used hand sanitizer.  Travel protocols were used, surfaces cleaned and again tons of hand sanitizer while flying. Now back in WA which has seen a tremendous increase in cases(there was only one when we left) so social distancing ect are now in effect. I'm going to see how things play out and then act accordingly to the situation. I'm as ready as you can be and zero stress about it as a result of that. What will be will be.

Well woke up at 5 am thinking about getting rid of my aluminum cans and  getting all of my garden amendments today.  So that is what I am doing after work.i have two grocery store runs planned for Sat. really early and Monday late at night.  Hope that is my last visit  on Monday  for any more food.  If I can just make it until next Friday without getting sick I will be very thankful.

Started some seeds for container gardening. The squirrels are a problem in my yard. So, may need to consider some plan to detour them. I do some container gardening every year, this year will be both pleasurable and practical perhaps.

FluMom, is there not a grocery delivery service from the markets were you live?  I worry less when I have things delivered.  I feel like I have more control about what I'm touching and wiping down to put away to protect myself.
