Admittedly, I think Carbon's point is right and yes, this is an open forum.  In fact (as the propaganda of the other country's government can't reach far enough to overwhelm them) people from other countries can often see more clearly, what the residents of the land-in-question can not.  Not just in America,  this applies to everyone, even Australians!

But Newbie1A has a point too.  So this is off to politics where it belongs.

Not 'sad' - just sick and tired of politics pushing people off/out of this forum...  Why I now come & post links I find in news and leave... follow very few posts here anymore, and as soon as I see one turning to political cat fight - I leave and make sure not to click on it again.

This forum has lost a few long term members over the continual childish bickering of politics - and if you feel the need to yammer about US, Canada or Aussie politics...I REALLY don't care, just "please kindly dear sir, please, please put it under the Political Discussion heading"!!!!

If it's to be - it's up to me!

You'r kinda a drama queen. You are the Aussie equivalent of TRUMP as you both like to run your mouths, maybe TURDBON20 is more fitting  a name because you never really say anything too intelligent just like to start sh*t.

Of course you have to consider the source of TURDBON20's information he's completely uninformed as to US history and has never even been to the US but he loves to tell us how to run our country. That is kinda hilarious and pathetic.

Newbie1A, I get what you're saying.  I really do.  But in the US climate of pandemic, it is nearly impossible.  The pandemic has been politicized.  Heck, even wearing a mask has for some become a matter of civil rights.

Considering what happens here in the U.S. impacts the rest of the world, it's unrealistic, even naive, to expect those who don't live in the U.S. fail to have an opinion. We enjoy freedom of speech. Something I believe all people world-wide should have. But that's not to say freedom of speech comes without consequences. The consequences here is being attacked by members who's ideology includes a belief in isolationism and gives them what they think is an excuse to attack those for expressing that opinion. But it's not an excuse for personal attacks. That's my issue... just sayin'...

Having and stating an opinion is completely different from consistently and continually berating an opposing view point before it is even expressed. Interesting that as AFT has a rather large international draw there doesn't seem to be many who feel the need to tell other countries how to conduct their internal domestic business or political business on here. Just a few.

AI, please don't get personal.

Call Carbon's opinions horses**t if you want.  But don't call him names.

I know AI got personal with you first, Carbon, but you don't have to sink to that level too.

BOTH of you are entitled to your opinion AND to disagree with each other.  NEITHER are allowed to name-call.

Oh, and Carbon, you did call Newbie!A sad.  OK, so not such a big insult, but please bear in mind that Newbie has feelings too.

Hey Carbon!  I will play!  haha.  I have to say at this point, I do not know which one of them to believe.  I also feel like educated people outside of scientist or epidemiologist as well as the medical scientist, are all split on what they think.  I haven't seen a consistent message from the same group of people at all.  Its crazy how divided everything is.  I am reaching out to people like you and others I can find across the country to try to determine what is really happening out there.

One thing I will say that is still confusing to me is how Trump supporters think this whole thing is happening to keep him from getting elected.  I see two problems with this theory.  1.  even if there were a crisis, a President could come out on the positive side based on his response, so if the response was amazing, re-election could easily happen.  2.  how did we get all the other countries to participate in this because they don't give a crap about our elections.

Anyway, with that said, I want to state I am a Republican but not a Trump supporter.  With all the division in this country, I really don't know what to believe anymore.  Only time will tell in my opinion!

Carbon you do make me laugh. I'm in the middle of a bugger of a day here with lots of unpleasant negotiations going on, and I clicked on here for a bit of distraction over lunch and you have made me laugh out loud. Good on you.

As for me, I like Dr Fauci. He appears to be calm, sober and educated - what's not to like. All jokes aside, Trump is literally gambling with people's lives. Real people who have lives and families and a reason to live and now tens of thousands of them are dead and it didn't have to be this way. Unfortunately it's not Trumps actions that have directly killed them, it's the results of his inactions that have. And 60,000 plus new cases a day is just shameful.

Roni, how can anyone seriously think this is a conspiracy to stop Trump getting reelected? Seriously I can't believe anyone is that stupid that they would think the whole world would play along. It's complete madness.

I fully appreciate that it's easy to criticize a politicians actions or lack of them and opposition leaders all over the world are having a field day doing just that, but what many of them are failing to do is to provide a reasonable alternative action at the time. With hindsight, of course, it's very easy to suggest alternative action. But in times of crisis, politicians really should listen to experts. If a nuclear power station was in meltdown, politicians would be talking to nuclear scientists about it and heeding their advice and so I fail to see why some politicians believe that they (with no medical education whatsoever) know more than the doctors. It beggars belief.

History may well prove that some of the early medical advice given during this pandemic was wrong, and that time has proven another way to be better, but at the time it was given, it was the best informed choice available. The countries around the world that are coping best with this disease are the ones who listened to their medical experts and not just to their economic advisors.

You can't fix stupid.

Not much of a numbers guy are you. Best estimates now are that 40% of cases are asymptomatic, 80% of symptomatic cases are mild and that the IFR is 0.5%.  99.5% of those infected will live. The vast majority of those who die had underlying medical conditions. So it's hardly a case of roll over and die. Odds are pretty high you'll live no matter what.

I've said it before and I'll say it again there are no experts on COVID19 everyone is in best guess mode and their best guesses keep coming up short. The experts in Feb said "no you don't need to wear a mask" and now today they say "yes you need to wear a mask".  How much lower would the infected numbers be if they has said yes everyone wear a mask to cut down transmission in Feb? And I'm not talking about N95's. That just goes back to there are no experts, they are in the learning curve. Although I will say seems funny they didn't know about large droplet transmission and masks preventing it. No different than a common cold transmission in that aspect.

You crowed and trumpeted after low numbers due to the lock down in AU and your governments actions as a model  for the world but yet here you are again in lock down mode in your major cities in AU. Is it anyone's fault or is it just a virus that has a large asymptomatic segment, highly infectious and is hard to contain?

It's not a lack of leadership that is spreading the virus, it's the stealthy nature of this virus and it's humane nature and actions that is continuing to propagate the spread of this virus.

And as for a vaccine, while I don't think it's impossible, I think due to the nature of corona viruses and the rate of mutation I think a working vaccine is improbable.

And so instead of politicizing the virus like you do and hoping the government (leadership) will save you, the only thing you can reasonably due is take an individual responsibility and act accordingly and follow protocols to limit your chances of infection. Or not and chances are high you'll live anyway.

I use the analogy that the virus is like a long cold hard winter and is taking out the sick, old and the weak as well as the occasional strong one. It's nature culling the herd and it happens. Just be glad it's not something more virulent and that the winter isn't colder and longer. Of course the caveat being this isn't over yet, now is it.

Going to rant so bare with me:

I'm a US citizen and we all need to understand this is both a failure of leadership and of personal responsibility.  The political message was garbled, people got confused, then the message turned to political division.  So people don't social distance, don't ware masks, and there goes the economy.  We should have been better off then other countries, we had an extra month to prepare. Then we closed the economy for two months, spent 3 trillion dollars and bent the curve.  All we had to do at that point is test, contract trace, maintain some social distance when possible, and ware masks when you can't distance. The economy rebounds and Trump probably wins re-election.

Six months later and we still can't test everyone and are worse off then when we locked down before.  So yeah the Aussy is right, the US is now where the bulk of the virus resides and it is a threat to the rest of the world. Once Trump, the self described stable genus, that can't read and has no powers of concentration, decided he was going to run the show the wheels come off.  139K dead and counting, many more with long term impairments, there is nothing worse then a leader that thinks he knows it all, and It is not the things he knows that will screw him, it is the things he knows that aren't so. (Mark Twain).   Pathetic and embarrassing.

Excellent post, Taxman.  The only thing I'd add is that it was less of a matter of a garbled message, but mixed messaging that has led to outright lies.  This pandemic or the handling of this pandemic should never have become a political issue.  I don't blame the scientists for this.  Science recognizes virus knows nothing of politics and doesn't care.  And anyone who thinks the handling of this virus is a matter of personal, economic or political opinion is (and I could use stronger words) wrong.

AI and Carbon: Calm down!

Just look at Roni, Witchy and Taxman; they can all dissagree politely!

Thank you for the apologies Carbon.  They are noted, although it would be better to take the rants to me on a PM - I don't mind. *

As this was a novel (that means new, formerly unknown...) virus, I would expect good medical advice to change with time as more was learnt about the virus.   So I find it reassuring if doctors can change the advise (but only if they give the reason for it).

Like at the early stages masks were in short supply so the recommendation was to reserve them for the front line medical staff as this was the priority.  As supply increased then the recommendation could cover everyone.   This the recommendation from the medical world has changed, but I can agree with the reasons for the change.

What a pity that politicians weren't just honest about the mask shortage. If only they had explained that masks save lives and then they could have encourage people to make their own - which everyone is doing now anyway. If that had happened at the start things would have been so different in every country, not just America.

What really worries me now is Trump collating all the virus figures and bypassing the CDC. It's obvious that he will manipulate the figures to show a sudden decline in numbers so he can claim he's crushing the virus in the run up to the election. That behaviour is positively deceitful and fraudulent and should not be allowed. He is becoming a dictator.

You can't fix stupid.

CNN: New poll reaffirms that most Americans don't trust the president, but they do trust Dr. Fauci.

cnn...lmao

fauci...the guy who called hydroxy evidence anecdotal but advocates a social distancing approach that has never been practiced...

good luck hiding from a virus...my wife believes in all this stuff but even staying home you still come in contact with  others who dont...thats just life

and the only real numbers that you can trust are still the diamond princess

4k onboard...7 deaths...older population...and a population density twice that of nyc

years from now it will be interesting to see what the hindsight verict is on the social distancing "experiment"
