My question to you all is will you have the vaccine when it's offered to you?

Would you refuse it and if so why?

Is there one vaccine that you'd prefer or one that you simply wouldn't have.

Thanks.

I did not want to be among the first.  Too risky!  But now, YES!

Of course there is a risk.  ALL medical procedures carry some risk, new ones even more.  But the risks of not having it seem to me to be several thousand times higher than those from getting it.  People are untrustworthy, science is more trustworthy, maths is unalterable (except in the eyes of those too stupid to fathom it).

Lots of my family front line NHS workers doing ward rounds etc including DH.  They all took vaccine in Dec got Pfizer.

I am not so keen on Moderna as they use a very high concentration of mRNA, but that could just be me.  They dont use the beads that Pfizer do to wrap their RNA around so shouldn't cause as many allergic reactions as the former.

Oxford may not be as effective as Pfizer but using an adenovirus based vaccine that has been used in small scale studies over many years for Ebola, Zika and Rabies.   They have 10 years experience with it.  These vectors have been used in vet medicine as well.

In a perfect world I would like a more traditional based vaccine but not sure if these will come.

I would prefer the more "traditional" vaccine, less the mRNA one-maybe also out of fear for long term complications-but also because I am against making profit out of a pandemic.

Another question is WHEN to get a vaccine...in many ways I am "strong and healthy" and can manage in "a certain form of isolation"-so others may have much more benefit from a vaccine then me...I can wait-if need be-for myself-even several months...

The global vaccine inequality (mentioned by the WHO) is a major concern. If it would help I would even be willing to get a vaccine in 2022 if more vulnarable, or "strategic" (Indonesia is vaccinating those that may most likely spread the virus most-drivers, people in shops etc.) people did get a vaccination earlier around the globe...the One World idea..But it does not work that way..

If I could choose a vaccine I would go for the AstraZeneca/Oxford one...here in NL I'm also very likely to get that vaccine (offered) in april is the plan.

Yes, I will take what is offered.

But it seems likely that it will not be before April here in Finland, s I am not in the high risk groups (ie am under 70 without health conditions).

I will take what we get here,

I did say in another thread that I like the J &J that also is not a mRNA ........

If I have a choice that's what I would like.....

Looks like we will get the Pfizer one here in my retirement community, but I will take whatever I can get. I was allowed to put my 31 year old son on our list here since he is my one and only "caregiver" who would come into the community to help me if I needed that. I feel that is a good thing- offer it to others instead of perhaps wasting any vaccine on the day that we get it.

I have mixed feelings about these Covid 19 vaccines. I do believe in vaccinations but am wary of vaccines released in their experimental stages, which is what has happened with these vaccines. I have a number of elderly relatives and relatives who work in hospitals overseas who are all very keen to get whatever is offered to them. As for me and my family here in NZ, firstly I'd say that we are all fit and healthy and comparitively young, we have no underlying health problems and we live in a place with no virus circulating, so we find ourselves in a luxury position that is not available to everyone and I am acutely aware of that.

The vaccine program is being rolled out here in April. I'm hoping by then that more information on safety of the vaccine will be available. My children are fully vaccinated, but one of them reacts badly to every vaccine he receives. He developes a vaccine fever that is flu like and lays him low for 5 days. Our doctor says he's just very sensitive to vaccines, so I am very wary of him having anything other than a time tested and safety proven vaccine. So we'll watch this space and take medical advice when the time comes. Due to our ages and health status, the odds of us dying from Covid are very small, but you never know.

Myself and my coworkers are still waiting for our first shot, which is ridiculous as we’re healthcare workers. The vaccine roll out in the US is a farce.

Kiwi mum you are right in that different peoples circumstances will produce different needs.

Here in UK we are getting hammered.  We had over 1800 die today and it is relentless day after day. We aren't that big a country, but we have the worst daily death rate in the world at present.  Our whole country is locked down, only essential food shops open, and only allowed to leave for exercise, no work and no schools etc, and still the numbers keep rolling in.  I know people have got lockdown fatigue, but this is something more, it seems so dam infectious.  People are reporting that they have stayed at home, had no contact with anyone, but are still getting it. Young people with no underlying health issues ending up in intensive care with this variant.  Something is different about it, its fast and relentless.

One of my relatives hospital in London featured on BBC.  Large hospital 12 out of 15 floors crammed with Covid patients,   400 army medics helping.  They say every floor is just filled with alarms beeping as O2 saturations are  so low.  They hears them in their sleep now.

Its a harrowing few minutes video from BBC but covers it quite well.....we thought Italy was bad last year, we are in a worse situation now.

So over 70% of health workers have now been vaccinated.  The NHS booking forms go up and are filled in hours.  A lot were vaccinated in December.   In Scotland  a set of new dates were released just before midnight on New Years Eve, and by 2am they were all full.   I think UK has vaccinated 4million people first dose now.  A lot of people here in UK at the moment are knowing they could end up like those in hospital, and they don't want to be lying there suffocating knowing they had turned down the vaccine.  So because of the mess our country is in due to this disease people are fighting for the vaccine.  making decisions under pressure and duress aren't the best, but it is terrible here, just terrible.

NZ have done amazing.  How much that is genetic, environment, leadership, population distribution etc I am no expert.  You have a good control over this that many of us here in the UK dont have.

Take care everyone

Here in NZ the first people to be vaccinated will be border workers, people who work at airports, on planes, dockside, in ports  and in quarantine facilities. They are hoping to bring forward deliveries of the vaccine to February to do those people and then it'll be health care workers, then, beginning in April,  the vulnerable and elderly and then the rest of the population by October this year. I do know that Jacinda Ardern has paid for 22 million doses and we have a population of 5 million. The additional is to cover all the people of the small island nations of the Pacific, which I personally think is such a great idea, as the islanders suffer greatly from obesity and diabetes so that would put them in a high risk category.

I got my 1st Covid vaccine on Tuesday this past week. I had no issues. I thought I might since I have a lot of allergies and have a history of anaphylaxis to some drugs and food. They kept me extra long for observation but I was fine. I get my 2nd dose on February 9th.

It is good that you had no reaction, and heartening to hear that they (medical staff) were taking your history seriously to keep you under observation longer than most people.

Healthcare worker here in Mid-Missouri USA. I just got my 1st round of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine yesterday. I would have been interested in other options had they been available in this country, but this and Moderna are what we have. I was happy to not have the Moderna version, as we've seen more issues with it locally. So far I have experienced a bit of tiredness, arm soreness, and one wave of nausea and vomiting about 6 hours after the vaccine. I felt much better afterwards, and no repeat performances. Shot #2 will be Feb 13, and I'm hopeful but anxious as I've read about more enhanced reactions on the second dose. I have a history of anaphylaxis as well, and was monitored by a RN for an hour after receiving the vaccine; I expect that the same will happen with dose #2.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort!

Relatives of mine who've had the vaccines so far have reported the following:

88 year old man, Pfizer vaccine, no side effects and not even a sore arm. He's delighted.

79 year old man and woman, Oxford Astra Zeneca, no side effects at all, both feel fine and very relieved.

92 year old woman, Pfizer, has had both of her shots and reported no side effects and she feels fine. She has no underlying health problems and is as fit as a flea.

23 year old woman, a nurse at a large UK hospital who has had Covid, Pfizer vaccine, felt awful afterwards, full on flu symptoms for 8 days afterwards, she is expecting even more of a reaction with her second shot. Has been told that people who've had Covid react badly to the vaccine. She's still going to have her second shot regardless.

24 year old woman, currently in bed with Covid. She's a police officer and caught it on the job. Has been ill for a week but starting to feel better. Has to delay having her first jab until 6 weeks after recovering from Covid.

FYI: Is there any reason to avoid fever reducers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen with vaccine administration? — Dear Pandemic

Q: Is there any reason to avoid fever reducers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen with vaccine administration?

A: It is generally recommended NOT to pretreat with fever reducers prior to vaccine administration, but if you develop a fever or feel uncomfortable after the vaccine you can take over the counter medicines. Pretreating may decrease the immune response to the vaccine.

News article......."After you get each dose of the shot, Petri says it’s still important to practice those public health measures.

“The volunteers in the studies were wearing masks, so it’s the vaccine plus the mask, and the social distancing, and the hand washing is getting you to 95%,” Petri said."

So how effective is the vaccine alone? If you are still practicing all the safe measures to achieve 95%?

Petri's wrong. Masks, handwashing, and social distancing had no bearing on how they calculated the 95% figure.

You dont reduce fever unless you have to.

Immune cells are made to work in slightly higher body temperatures, also higher body temp gets liver to release back up immune fighting chemicals and components.  We used to have fun looking at immune cells eating labelled antigen under normal and elevated temperature.  You can used video microscopy. They would zip around like rabid little beasts in heated conditions.

Lots of other reasons why fevers help with antiviral responses. Its role in vaccine success  (generation of long term memory response),  not yet fully understood, but led NHS to suggest not to take NSAIDs, unless necessary.  As well as reducing temp these also dull down release of inflammatory mediators you need for immunological memory.

Not quite, but sort of.......................

The 95% applies to vaccine effectiveness after both doses and on a personal basis.  You do not reach 95% personal effectiveness until 2 weeks after the second dose.  This was the results of the study.  Public health did not (could not) form part of the study.

But because of the delay and the unknowns in how easy it still is to spread the virus even if you are immune, as far as both personal and public effectiveness is concerned the other measures are needed too.

Here is the entire article from Dr Petri

As more people begin to get their first dose of security against the coronavirus, there are still many wondering when you should and should not get the COVID-19 vaccine, but one UVA Health doctor clears up some of your lingering questions.

“Having COVID is not a reason not to get vaccinated,” Dr. Bill Petri, professor of infectious disease at UVA Health, said.

As some people wait to get their second vaccine shot, there’s still a chance of contracting the virus: “The vaccine is about 60% effective after the first dose, and it’s only after the second dose that we get up to the 95%,” Petri said.

The doctor says there are two instances where folks should not proceed to get their second COVID-19 vaccine: “There’s only two contraindications to getting the coronavirus vaccines, and one is if you received these anti-spike monoclonal antibodies,” Petri said. “The other is if you have an allergy to one of the components of the vaccine.”

Before getting the second dose, Petri says it’s important to note which vaccine you received and when in order to maximize its effectiveness.

“We know that 95% effectiveness for Moderna came from spacing those two doses out four weeks apart. It’s slightly different for the Pfizer vaccine, which is also being given out by the Blue Ridge Health District. Pfizer is three weeks apart,” Petri said.

After you get each dose of the shot, Petri says it’s still important to practice those public health measures.

“The volunteers in the studies were wearing masks, so it’s the vaccine plus the mask, and the social distancing, and the hand washing is getting you to 95%,” Petri said. “They’re really revolutionary vaccines. We have never had vaccines that are as effective as these are.”

With many people wondering how long the vaccine will likely work in the body, Petri has some good news: “I’m pretty optimistic that we’re going to see a prolonged antibody response, so that these are not going to need to be boosted in like six months or a year from now,” he said. “Hopefully by this summer we’re going to have everyone vaccinated and then we’ll be able to see the diminution in the transmission.”

Why Do You Have to Wear a Mask Even After Getting the COVID Vaccine? Here's What Experts Say

Don't toss your face mask stash yet.

By    Claire Gillespie
January 21, 2021

An effective vaccine is the first big step toward ending the coronavirus pandemic, and that's exactly what's being rolled out across the US right now. But our days of wearing face masks aren't over yet. While both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are more than 90% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19, we still don't know whether they prevent you from  spreading the virus to other people. That's why experts strongly advise that everyone mask up, and that includes anyone who has received the vaccine.

Both the Pfizer and Moderna trials tracked only how many vaccinated people became sick with COVID-19, meaning it's completely possible that some vaccinated people could subsequently get infected but not develop any symptoms. Those people could then transmit the virus without being aware of it, and the biggest risk is that they spread it to others who haven't been vaccinated yet, Anne Rimoin, PhD, MPH, professor of epidemiology at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, tells Health.

"It will take time to widely distribute the vaccine and achieve herd immunity (and that's not guaranteed), so non-pharmaceutical interventions like mask wearing and social distancing will continue to be crucial to stopping the spread," explains Rimoin. If many Americans continue to be hesitant about getting the vaccine, there could be a lot of susceptible people, she adds. Remember, some people aren't able to get vaccinated, such as those with severe allergic reactions to vaccine ingredients. And some pregnant or breastfeeding women may choose not to receive the vaccine until more information is available about the safety of the vaccines in those groups.

Continuing to wear a face mask is also important because of the new COVID variants that have been identified. Because they're thought to be more infectious, they can spread more easily to more people if vaccinated people are able to transmit the virus and don't wear a mask, Rimoin warns.

There's another reason to keep masking up even after you've been vaccinated. "In our modern society, we don't discriminate by immune status, and the ethics of doing so would be a very slippery slope," Michal Tal, PhD, an immunologist at Stanford University, tells Health. "It's already hard to get everyone to follow current masking regulations, and now if you have some people who are vaccinated (and likely, but not certainly, immune from developing COVID-19 symptoms) not needing to adhere to those same regulations, it will wreak additional havoc on what has already been an extremely chaotic pandemic response."

The advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is clear. According to the group's guidelines, "not enough information is currently available to say if or when CDC will stop recommending that people wear masks and avoid close contact with others to help prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19."

Per the CDC guidelines, we need to keep social distancing (by staying six feet away from other people), too. The CDC also recommends avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, and washing your hands often—even after you've had your COVID-19 shot.

So will we ever be able to ditch our masks? Hopefully, yes—although they might remain a significant part of life for some.

"I think that we have to continue to wear masks until everyone has had a chance to get vaccinated and we have gotten the virus under control," Tal says. "When community transmission is low and the majority of people are vaccinated, I think we'll safely be able to put our masks away."

However, nobody knows for sure what role masks will play in our future. "I've often wondered if one day we will move houses and discover an old box of masks from these days and dust it off, not having thought about it in years, or if we will start to utilize masks more and more to control the spread of other respiratory infections, such as on an especially bad flu year," Tal says.

"I suspect that moving forward, doctors and nurses may incorporate masks as a standard part of personal protective equipment for their interactions with patients, much as glove wearing became standard during the AIDS epidemic and then became standard protective gear," she adds. "I think that the vast majority of us, however, can look forward to mask-free days as soon as everyone has had a chance to get vaccinated and viral spread in the community is low."

My significant other had a doctor's appointment last week. His doctor said covid is extremely bad in our area and to not go out if you don't have to. When you have to go to the grocery store wear 2 masks. I have noticed this week (I had 3 doctors appointments) that a lot of medical staff are wearing 2 masks now.

I just ordered face shields to wear over my two masks if I need to go to the doctor. I don't grocery shop - get all delivered, but wanted the shields just in case.

When you wear two masks, what kind of masks are you wearing?  I switched my family over to KN95s in December and we all wear them whenever we will be around other people. We also have surgical and cloth that are worn occasionally (when a mask is required by law, but not by common sense).

I have noticed that often at large televised gatherings (New Years Eve, The Inauguration...) that people will wear what looks to be a N95 under a “pretty” cloth mask.  I wonder how many people do that?

Me for one, LH.

My "personal protection" masks are vented.  This means that they do not offer much protection to others from me.

I am certain I don't have the virus, as we are hermits, but it seems to be a politeness not to scare everyone else.  So another mask goes over the top.

And yes, I am asthmatic, but manners are manners.

I wear KN95s under a cloth mask - my cloth masks have filters in them also.
I have n95s on order and KF94s on order too. Too many non-compliant folks in my senior apartment building. I can't be a total hermit- still must use the laundry room and go get my mail.

I saw a picture of Tom Cruise this week wearing 2 masks. He appeared to have a surgical mask on covered by a black cloth mask.

The district I am student teaching in bent over backwards and somehow got a bunch of us access to vaccinations on Friday. I got my first dose of the Moderna vaccine Friday evening...I am so grateful, because our students come back in person tomorrow. At least I’ll have 50% protection. I still don’t know how our district did it.

Va. Woman Dies Shortly After COVID Vaccination, Though No Link Has Been Found – NBC New York

While an official cause of death was not immediately determined, Keyes did not die from any allergic reaction connected to the vaccine, according to state Health Commissioner M. Norman Oliver.

A Virginia minister died shortly after she received a coronavirus vaccination, authorities said Friday, though there was no indication the vaccine was at fault.

Tim Zook’s last post on Facebook brimmed with optimism. “Never been so excited to get a shot before,” he wrote on Jan. 5, above a photo of the Band-Aid on his arm and his COVID-19 vaccination card. “I am now fully vaccinated after receiving my 2nd Pfizer dose.” Zook, 60, was an X-ray technologist at South Coast Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. A couple of hours later, he had an upset stomach and trouble breathing. By 3:30 p.m. it was so bad his colleagues at work walked him to the emergency room. “Should I be worried?” his wife, Rochelle, texted when she got the news. “No, absolutely not,” he texted back. “Do you think this is a direct result of the vaccine?” she typed. “No, no,” he said. “I’m not sure what. But don’t worry.” (Sforza, 1/26)

I will take whatever vaccine is offered although I do have concerns due to pre-existing multiple autoimmune issues, hoping will not cause a flare up.

I know of two people who've had the vaccine:

49 year old female HC worker, Moderna vaccine.  Extreme health and fitness nut. Down for one day after vaccine with  chills, fatigue, myalgia, joint pain.  Planning on taking a few days off work after second vaccine.

66 year old male retired, Pzifer vaccine.  Fitness and nutrition minded, generally healthy currently.  Cancer survivor 8 years out, pre-arthythmia (sp?) condition.  Sore arm after first shot.

I'm still a yes, and, the unexplained reactions and deaths will definitely keep my anxiety up for awhile.

My folks (83 and 85) both had both shots of the Pfizer vaccine. Zero symptoms after first one, and my stepmom only had a day where she was a little more tired after the second one. Otherwise zero side effects.  It's been 6 days since their 2nd shot, so I've almost stopped worrying.

I got my 2nd shot 4 days ago. I was really tired the first day but no other issues.

Usk has just posted this in another thread but I think it's relevant here.

I have some news of interest and I think this the best place for it. My cousin is a surgeon here in Virginia   He got  vaccinated in early Dec and 2nd shot end of Dec.  he started to feel unwell monday  he was diagnosed with Covid today!!!  He has mild respiratory issues enough to have him on home oxygen   We are all hoping he does not get worse   They sent out blood work to see what strain. He got Phizervaccine

Had to go in for a medical appointment - my Primary Care doctor told me he had his first vaccine, then two weeks later he got Covid. He was bedridden and unwell, but not in hospital (he is older too).

He thinks that he got it somehow at the indoor hockey rink that he plays at. He did not wear a mask while playing of course OR in the locker room. Said there were many unmasked players in the locker room and of course there are showers that you won't wear your mask in.

I can not help but think that people tend to let their guard down after their vaccine. Been reading more and more stories like this.
He goes a year seeing patients and NOT getting Covid, then gets the vaccine and gets infected!

I suppose this will cause "heads to explode", but I'll just leave this right here. I am clear that it isn't all about mortality, and in fact I'm considering taking the J&J injection. That being said, me and mine will not be taking any experimental gene therapy injection.

I looked into the rest of the site and they are clearly VERY anti-vax in general.

It is never possible to be 100% sure who is lying to you; it could be the anti-vaxers or the government.  In my personal belief system, it is both.  However, Hubby had the Pfizer jab several weeks ago and I am having it next Friday, alongside our daughter.  Hubby is fine and I have no worries.

This time, on this given site, I believe the biggest twisting of the truth is underway*.  Yes, a few people develop covid just after vaccination, those who were already gestating it.  A few have anaphalaxic reactions; which the attending medical staff  are ready for.

Our hospitals are not full of sick and dying vaccine recievers.  But they are bursting at the seams with sick and dying covid patients.  That should tell you all you need to know about comparing figures.  Those numbers speak for themselves.

*They have a manefesto of sorts:
