Hi Betty here's your post

Yancey flu scare draws CDC

by Angie Newsome, ANEWSOME@CITIZEN-TIMES.COM

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research team is scheduled to arrive in Yancey County this week to investigate a recent flu outbreak that closed schools and some churches.

Lynda Kinnane, supervisor of the Yancey County Health Department, said the four-person research team would help local and regional officials research how the flu spread from person to person and whether the decision to close the school system last Wednesday was effective. < = =text/> OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1');

“We’ve never had anything like this happen here before,” Kinnane said. “We welcome them coming.”

Officials are also set to decide today whether the county’s nine-school system should reopen Wednesday as originally planned, Kinnane, Yancey County Manager Michele Lawhern and Yancey County Schools Superintendent Barbara Tipton said.

Officials decided to close the 2,575-student school system last week after about 250 children and up to 45 teachers became ill with a widespread flulike illness, causing mass absenteeism.

Debbie Crane, a spokeswoman with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, said last Thursday that preliminary tests showed that the county has at least two cases of the flu, the first confirmed influenza cases in the state this flu season.

Local health officials gave a total of 1,200 flu shots in the last week, Kinnane said, adding that the health department may organize another flu shot clinic for the weekend. Flu shots are also available during regular operating hours at the county health department.

It generally takes about two weeks for flu shots to be effective.

Tipton said the school system offered flu shots yesterday. Flu shots will be offered to current and retired school employees again from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday.

While officials have recently encouraged residents to avoid gathering places, Lawhern said that all polling places are equipped with hand sanitizers and disinfectant spray for today’s election.

“We are encouraging folks certainly to still get out to vote,” she said.

Betty, often when you cut and paste, the fonts will be in black, on this black background they don't show up. What you can do is cut and paste and then run your cursor back over the 'invisible' text to select it. Then change the font color by clicking the box with the A up above on the far right. Then just choose another color for text.

Oh fudge... If yancey does like our county they close the schools because thats where people go to vote.Which could potentially cause more infections.....

And if the schools are out there local kids are possibly going to hit the local gathering place...Walmart....Which is where I go to get grocerys..kids from 3 counties hang out at walmart.

I dont think I want to go get grocerys this week or next...

hi Carolina kid....  What you mention makes me wonder about somerhing I read.

So if it's possible with Sars (see below)... is it possible in other cases of vaccination meets the real wild thing?

China just bought up 1.8 ? million worth of (not available commercially) H5N1 vaccine...  :O
.................................................................................................................

"...some vaccines against feline coronaviruses actually enhanced disease

when vaccinated animals were exposed to wild-type virus, and

antibody enhancement of disease is a potential risk of SARS vaccines in humans..."

so... is antibody enhancement of disease...

a potential risk of H5N1 vaccines in humans?

Up here in northeast Ohio where I live everyone is coughing, bronchitis, etc...I ended up with walking pneumonia. I'm still coughing after 3 weeks but I get this almost every year or every other year and can last 3 month! Now my husband is starting to have "flu" symptoms...achey muscles, very weak, but no fever so I think you have to have fever right? to have flu? or am I wrong? He called me from work and might come home early. Even my doctor is not working cause she is sick(not sure with what) Everyone is sick but not so sick they can't get around to stores, schools so they can spread this...

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause encephalitis(inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

West Nile virus is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. A mosquito becomes infected by biting a bird that carries the virus. You or your child cannot get West Nile virus from a person who has the disease. West Nile virus is not spread by person-to-person contact such as touching, kissing, or caring for someone who is infected.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene encourages New York City residents to report all dead bird sightings within NYC, especially crows and blue jays. This will assist us in our efforts to monitor possible WNV activity.

My son came home from school yesterday complaining he didn't feel well, by five he had a high fever and sore throat. I could see the white pockets in his throat and sure enough: strep. It's that time of year again. Flu, strep all the other junk. Makes our job a little tougher sorting through what is common stuff and what may be a sign of serious outbreak.

Flu Outbreak in Western North Carolina

An early and fast-moving influenza outbreak has hit the western portion of North Carolina. The outbreak has reached the point of being an epedimic.

On Nov. 2, Yancey County officials closed the school system through Tuesday, Nov. 7 because of the unusually high rate of students and faculty experiencing influenza-like symptoms. It has been confirmed that a 9-month-old and 7-year-old child have been hospitalized with the flu.

"This outbreak is moving fast and could reach Union County very soon," said Jenny Kirksey, director of the Union County Health Department. "It is imperative that citizens of Union County get a flu shot."

The Union County Health Department is offering flu shots to adults on Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Monroe. Flu shots are also being provided at the Health Department. For more information, call the Health Department at 704-296-4800.

North Carolinians Urged to Help Stop Spread of Flu

RALEIGH – In the wake of yesterday’s preliminary confirmation of the state’s first two flu cases this season, public health officials urge North Carolinians to take measures to prevent spread of the flu and other respiratory viruses.

“This is good common sense,” says State Health Director Dr. Leah Devlin. “We call it respiratory etiquette – covering your coughs and sneezes and using tissues. Just like they teach you in kindergarten, you need to thoroughly wash your hands.”

Dr. Devlin says that people with flulike symptoms – a temperature 100 F or higher, a cough and/or a sore throat – should limit their exposure to others. “If you are sick, stay home,” she said. “There is no need to spread your viruses around.”

Earlier this week, Yancey County public school officials closed schools after more than 16 percent of the student body was absent with flulike symptoms. Yesterday, the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health preliminary confirmed two cases from Yancey County as Type B influenza. An absolute laboratory confirmation will not be available until next week.

There are two kinds of influenza that commonly infect humans – Type B and Type A. Influenza B is generally less serious than Influenza A. It is too early too know what the predominant strain of flu will be during this year’s season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been other reports of influenza in the country and most of the viruses reported in the southeast have been in children. Both Type A an Type B have been reported elsewhere.

According to the CDC, a record amount of flu vaccine has been produced this year, but there are still some problems in the vaccine distribution process. Now through December is a good time to get your annual flu shot.

I live in the HighPoint area and I heard it is influenza type A. However, we do need to watch because furniture market was just a few weeks ago, where people from all over the world, including Vietman, and China were in our area.

DESCRIPTION
Officials decided to close schools Thursday in Mitchell County after health officials confirmed 20 cases of the flu. The district's 2,200 students will not attend classes Thursday or Friday, which was already a scheduled holiday. Schools in neighboring Yancey County have been closed all week because of an outbreak of flu symptoms, and Mitchell County school officials say the illness may have spread from Yancey County. "This has been such a fast outbreak," Superintendent Brock Womble said. "We were in constant contact with the health department to make sure this (is) what we need to do." Researchers from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the North Carolina Division of Public Health this week were trying to assess the effectiveness of closing schools in Yancey County. They were also investigating how the illness spread.

Hi I'm not Carolina Kid, but, if this were anything but seasonal flu, like the panstrain, we would be seeing many many more sick and there would also be many deaths. It's just seasonal flu, this happens every year. When/if we start seeing hundreds and then thousands trying to get in the hospital with many people dying then we need to worry. Besides, we'll most likely see the pan strain emerge in Asia before the US.

CK,

I hope your little ones get better soon and that you stay healthy as well.  Thanks for the front line reports.  Unfortunately it appears that you are in the middle of a bad situation there.  Also it is frustrating to see that with all of the predictive analysis of the flu virus strains we have endured, to now see that we can't even get a seasonal flu vaccine right!  It will be interesting to see how this progresses.  Stay well!

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) reached an aviation milestone Oct. 18, successfully completing 20,000 arrested landings since the ship was commissioned in 2003.

The event occurred off the coast of Southern California while conducting training squadron carrier qualifications (CQs) with Naval aviators from the “Tigers” of Training Squadron (VT) 9.

Completing the milestone recovery was Lt. j.g. Robert “Fresh” Prince, a native of Rochester, N.Y., who has been in the Naval aviation training program for the past 18 months.

“After we landed, they told me I had to go and see the ship’s commanding officer,” said Prince. “I thought I was in trouble.”

Prince joined Capt. Terry B. Kraft, Ronald Reagan’s commanding officer, in cutting a ceremonial cake to mark the aviation milestone. He was also presented with the Ronald Reagan commanding officer’s coin.

“The entire experience aboard the carrier was great,” said Prince. “Capt. Kraft even took the time to show me around. I had no idea I would be making the 20,000th arrested landing aboard Ronald Reagan.”

Kraft said he was proud of his crew and the aviator's accomplishments.

“Being able to safely launch and recover 20,000 planes successfully just goes to show the outstanding work that our dedicated air and deck departments have done,” said Kraft. “Those Sailors, along with the rest of the hard working crew members of Ronald Reagan, are the reason why the ship has been so successful.”

“The fact that a student pilot was able to get the 20,000th trap showcases Ronald Reagan’s ability to not only perform well during combat operations, but also to perform efficiently and successfully during training evolutions as well,” said Kraft.

Keep us posted.  Remember to minimize the spread of germs.  Make it known to wash your hands long enough to sing row row row your boat 3 times and don't turn the water off before that.  If you sneeze or cough into your hands you should go wash them.

carolina kid,  I know your heart must be heavy with all those situations with loved ones.  You have my prayers and am sending good thoughts and wishes your way.  My mom always told me, 'This, too, shall pass'.  I have hung on to that thought many times.  Hang in there, things will be better soon.

Satomick:  You said you were in Watauga county = the Wilkes County Health Dept (your next county over) has flu vaccinations (for adults) so if you still need one and want one, call them and go get it.  They'll give you one from out of county.  If you need any info, call 336-651-7450.  I have a friend that works there in that Health Dept and she and I keep in touch via e-mail and she just told me yesterday they had plenty.  Take care, stay well!

CarolinaKid, I'm sure sorry to hear about all that you and your family are going thur right now.  When things get to be a bit much for you, just still away to a room by yourself for a minute or two and just sit, take a few deep breaths and repeat what your mom has told you. ( This to shall pass)  and just hold on to this thought regardless of what happen.  I'm sending you lots of peace and energy.  Now take a long long deep breath and let it out slowly.
