They know this is bad, they wouldnt be having press conferences "daily". Besser says "we wouldnt have even found this if we wouldnt have been doing surveillance". " All hands on deck" by Gibbs tells me that they are worried. They are clearly trying not to panic but I do not think they are disclosing ALL information, but we expected that. I do not think that they are acting fast enough to activate procedures, they are trying to put that off...they are just giving spippets to get people to think about what is to come. According to the Mexico authorities medication is not helping.

If they weren't concerned, they wouldn't have put us at a state of emergency. But hey, don't panic! I think you're right levy

Declaring a state of emergency is necessary to activate certain procedures and release govt. money, testing procedures and stockpiled antivirals. They made that clear during the press release. In my opinion, they are probably holding back information only until they have confirmed information, which is wise, and professionally appropriate. They will look really stupid if they run around spouting numbers and later have to say "oops, we were wrong, false alarm!"

True, this is what we expected anyway. I agree they have to be sure. Its amazing how fast the information is changing.

When the reporter asked, How long is a marathom?", the guy did not answer 18-24 months. He started talking and did not answer the question.

Would you go on national TV, with a couple hundred million people watching and confirm that it will definately last 18-24 months, and stake your reputation and your profession on that? I just think that are only confirming what they KNOW. I know I would.

He could have said the Spanish Flu came in 3 waves and lasted 18-24 months. We don't know yet if this will work the same. He said a marathon. That implies a long time. They should have told people to stockpile food and the didn't. Now they don't want to start the panic. I'm not feelin sorry for them. Let them handle it.

How long have we known about this? A nurse I know in MS was called into an emergency meeting about a week ago and they we told to fill out a large packet of material and she said they signed their life away. |

I believe they will not tell people to stockpile food and supplies until people go back to work during the week, thus not creating as much of a commotion at the stores as you would on a weekend, when everyone would try and get out at once. If they make the announcement while people are working the stores won't be so congested, some will go during the day those that are off, then some will go on their lunch hours, some will go after work. It would be more spread out than if it was on the weekend when most people are off work. The stores will be bad anyway.

Suzi1 by what the person in Mexico, unconfirmed source, said that this has been going on for 3 weeks. If this person from Mexico is correct no wonder the nurse had to sign their life away...CDC was aware!
I know government they will not lie they just wait until "all the facts are in and confirmed and rechecked and confirmed again" by that time it will be too late for people to do much of anything. |

I just made a run to the store, people are clueless!!! If today they came out and said to stockpile food...I dont know that anyone would listen. I did notice that they did say it was time for people to take personal responsibility and they did make mention that the food supply was safe.....the people Ive talked to, Ive asked what they thought about the flu on the news....here is their response...."what? what flu" I dont feel sorry for those people either. Its a catch 22, to me no matter what the govt put out, its also up to the people to hear what they say and take action. |

I don't think they're gonna tell anyone to sockpile any thing. Because (if poeple listen anyway)its going to make people panic. And not because of the flu itself but because there will be more mandatory quarantines of folks like a family in Texas whose teenage son has a mild case of the swine flu but "the whole family is quarantined indefinitely" - cnn.com. Folks will further freak out once they see the government exercise all of the powers at their disposal because of the declared state of emergency.

Mary BroPHY MARCUS, USA TODAY: Hi, I actually have two questions the first; do we have any idea about the infectious window for this particular strain of influenza? SCHUCHAT: You know, it's usually within a few days but can be as long as nine days at this point. So, we are looking at the, you know, a spectrum. Some of the cases that we are reporting occurred quite a while ago. But have now made it through the laboratory system. And some of the cases occurred in the more recent past couple of weeks. |

Just heard an interview with a guy from WHO on the radio here in Australia. He says they don't recommend wearing masks, and aren't too concerned about the spread of swine flu until they get further information.
Biggest crock I've ever heard.

Since its Mexico & the US playing a major role in the new outbreak the WHO & CDC advisory states that travel ban or containment is not effective at this time because of its economic impact on affected countries. Further they say containment is not feasible at this time because it has already spread. Mitigation they say instead of containment of the disease! This I believe is baloney & we should stop the disease from spreading by step up cleaning & disinfection & impose a travel ban on these countries even the affected states of the US. |

I just read a post by another person on this board - somewhere and sorry I don't remember where. I think the poster's name if "medclinican" from West Va.
He has access to CNN reporter "Sanjay" tweeter messages. According to this reporter, people are beginning to drop their masks in Mexico City. I saw a video on CNN with Sanjay getting into a hospital to film. There was no crowd and it looked and sounded clean and calm. There were flu patients on the ward with their doors closed. The massive mess of the previous days appears to be slowing down some from the appearance Sanjay is giving today. |

The reason why there are no more masks is maybe there isn’t enough mask to go around

I do think it is getting a lot better. Although we still will see a peak in the next 3 days, beyond that, everyone is so well informed, I think the buck stops there. I will not take my kids out this weekend to any public places, but I think next week things are back to usual. next fall is another matter though!

I had a thought this morning. What if this is actually the second wave in Mexico and the first one went unnoticed as in 1918?

This time I dont think they will tell anyone to stockpile I think its because we cant do that without a huge effect on our economy . One we would stop regular shopping shoes and stuff furniture . As we would only buy food and since that mostly imported now .
Its too late for that warning to do anything but panic people .
We would run out of food . Anyone know how much of our food is from mexico and how long before we shut the borders. Most of our food is imported and comercial large scale farmes which may be forced to close .
I am afraid of the panic of desparate people food . I say quietly [prep and shut up.
Has anyone heard of farmers in mexico being told to close their farms especilly the one been blamed for the swine flu
