Epidemic expert says Youre on your own

Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - Updated: 04:29 PM EST

Despite spending billions of dollars, society is far from prepared to deal with a mass outbreak of a killer influenza strain, delegates were told yesterday at the 2007 BIO International Convention in Boston.

Youre on your own, concluded David Ozonoff, a doctor at Boston Universitys School of Public Health, referring to worst-case scenarios of an outbreak.

We dont have a clue what the (degree of virulence) might be, said
Ozonoff of the strain of influenza that could hit the world.

Yesterdays session on a future flu pandemic - at which Ozonoff and other experts spoke - was one of scores of seminars and conferences held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, where thousands of biotech executives have gathered for the giant BIO 2007 event that runs through tomorrow.

Biotech and pharmaceutical companies are working hard to ramp up operations in the event of a pandemic, thanks to billions of dollars set aside by the federal government for research and preparedness, experts said.

The recent avian flu scare in some countries has put nations around the globe on alert for a pandemic.

Experts agreed its not a matter of if but when a flu pandemic, perhaps as severe as the strain that killed millions in 1918, breaks out.

Bruce Gellin, director of the national vaccine program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said substantial progress has been made in developing potential vaccines, antiviral therapies and diagnostic
kits.

But the nations vaccine production capacity is still far short of what is ideally needed if a pandemic occurs, said Gellin.
I dont think were going to be able to stop a pandemic in its track, said Gellin. Our goal is to slow it down and lessen its impact.

I wonder if folks really understand the phase "you're on your own!"

Let's take a pretend look at what being on our own could possibly mean:
In the medical field: No annual physicals, no elective surgeries, no attention for minor cuts, bumps or bruises...well, you say, I can handle that!

Okay, how about no available emergency rooms for gall stone attacks, angina, panic attacks, ...keep going I can handle that you say!

No one to fill grandma's oxygen bottle, no one to set an arm or leg splint, no milk or baby-food on the shelf, no aspirin at the drug store, no cold or flu medicines at the pharmacy, getting the picture. You are on your own!

Prepare now, get extra of everything! If you have to have something, get extra now. I have a prescription I must take daily. It comes in the mail every ninety days. I mail it in a little early each time so I have a pill or two extra that I stash. I rotate all of the stash when a new ninty day supply arrives. I hope to have at least thirty days, eventually a ninty day surplus. That will take a long time. Prepare now. Those daily prescription medicines may also be delayed or stopped during a pandemic. JMHO

You're right ShaRenKa, I don't expect any help from anyone. Thanks Kilt for the post reminding me to stay on the Prep Track!

I have to agree with Annie, we need to be prepared. I also agree with no one will be there to help us. I already have a supply of OTC meds and trying to get any prescription meds refilled, etc.  Things I would have normally thrown away, I have kept like a walking cast for a broken ankle from when DD broke her foot, a wrist imobilizer from when I had tendonitis, crutches, ace bandages, all this stuff I would have normally thought of as clutter and gotten rid of, but now.......what if something happens and we can't get to a doctor?  Kilt, thanks for reminding us we need to continue our prepping for all items!

I'm not the fittest person around, however i never really thought i was anything but "on my own".  One thing everyone should be doing is getting into the fitness mode.  A few hours in the gym each week will certainly help.  Hiking, what if you have to hike somewhere, can you do it?  Think 10 miles.  You surely don't think you'll be able to take your car and fill it with gas when it's low?  What happens if they are giveing shots downtown and you live 10 miles out, or they are only available in the next city and your tank is on empty?  Being prepared is more then just having a few bottles of water on hand and a cupboard full of food.  What happens if you have to leave and carry your provisions on your back?  Did you prepare for that?  Do you have a backpack that is comfortable and something you can carry, do you have a tent or shelter of some sort if you have to leave your home?  I recently bought a tent trailer, (cost $300) very light weight, and it can cary a lot of provisions.  I could survive a long time out at lake meade in it and use a water purifyer that works like a pump to get safe water.  Fish would be available for food to go with my rice and beans.  Prepare for the worst case senario you can think of.  What about an inflatable boat, that maybe a life saver, if you have to escape to the everglades or move out on the great lakes now and then.  I have two inflatable  kyakes (coleman, paid $100 for both at amazon and took advantage of their rebates.   What will you do if you have to abandon your home?  How many rounds of shotgun shells do you have?  you might need them just to escape from your home.  If you're in a subzero area, do you have sleeping bags to accomodate the weather?  Do you know how to fish? hunt? watch the survivor shows and see what is safe to eat, can you eat worms or grubs?  Dandilion, is a tasty meal when you're hungry.  Do youhave plenty of vitamin C?  Think outside of your 4 walls.

Shame on all governments for preparing behind the scenes but not getting the national media to ramp up the reporting of this possibility. In their effort not to panic people they are writing many death certificates instead.

Sandman - Kiwi mate

It is a difficult thing to contemplate the reality of such an event and for that its good to look at history

If a couple of years ago someone said a hurricane would wipe New Orleans away and there would be no food or water and the police would desert and the government would do nothing, the law and order would break down and chaos would rule - with rapes, murder and robbery on a grand scale - no body would have believed it yet it is precisely what happened.

With a H5N1 pandemic - doctors and nurses plan on deserting and leaving all patients - broken legs, heart attacks, car accidents, cut feet, broken fingers - all will have to fend for themselves.

Then there is lawlessness and if doctors and nurses desert there will be chaos, as peopel who are used to getting everything they want on demand get nothing - they will turn violent - not everyone but many.

Plus on top of this there is a rampant disease sickening and killing and starvation with no food in the markets

There will be a complete breakdown and the police will desert and I believe with all my heart that it will be like thousands of katrinas in every town and city all over the world every day.

If this happens - and history has shown it can - then there is nothing to stop a marauder from killing and raping your family except you and whatever provisions you have made.

If I cant ring the police because there is no police and there is no phone and I am faced with an intruder, I am in the situation that its them or me and I have a God given right to protect myself and my loved ones and my possessions if I am attacked.

The legal situation is based on "belief"

In the case of an unprovoked assault I am only legaly able to use "reasonable force "to protect myself" and that "reasonable force" must only be what is needed to protect myself and no more.

However - if the "Nature of the unprovoked assault" is such as to place me in fear of death or grieveous bodily harm and that fear is held on reasonable grounds, I may use "any force" to defend myself even if such force inflict death or grevious bodily harm.

This means:

Am I in danger of death?
Do I fear death?
Is that fear reasonable?
Have I done anything to provoke this person?
Is anyone coming to my aid?

If the answers are yes yes yes no no

Shoot first and ask questions later

If they come to you to take what is yours and hurt you and there is no law - you have a God Given right to defend yourself with deadly force.

Anything less than deadly force will only give them a chance to come back at you with deadly force the next day or next week.

With no police and no phone - you are the law and as such harsh words will not be enough to enforce the law - this could be like a war zone and you do not know who the enemy will be.

That is why I ask people to not tell people about their provisions and to be armed.

Kilt, if all comes true as you are thinking, do you really thing there will be a court of law left in this country?   The courts and judges are the first to abandon ship.  After this pandamic is over, if we survive, it'll be a whole different world, my thought are we'll revert back into the 15th century.

I was helping out a mate for a month - he has a fruit and vegie wholesale business

Its very labour intensive and it all boils down to the fact that is of all the people who put food on your table - growers, truck drivers, fork lift drivers, pickers, packers, buyers, sellers, all this before it even gets to the supermarket.

All these people handle the food and all are needed - if half the truck drivers get sick and cant drive - thats a disaster - the same with fork lift drivers and so on.

Food will not be available - there will be none and it will last for months and months - not days like Katrina.

People will become desperate and they will go out to take what they need.

Katrina showed us a complete breakdown and that was from a storm in one city - a pandemic will be everywhere.

Once the pandemic starts it will be interesting to see what part of our civilisation can take the challenge - law and order will be the first to go - police will either get sick and die or desert to avoid death - as they did in Katrina.

So with no law and order - crime will be out of control.

As for the courts - if there are no police there can be no courts.

The health system - already a disaster without a pandemic will breakdown and desperate people will take matters into their own hands - like in Katrina - the Doctors deserted there as well.

No food no water no power no fuel no law nothing except what we have put aside.

We will be on our own.

Kilt,     I'm glad you are seeing the whole picture.  This will be a movie with "No happy ending."  I look at the health of most people out there and it's sad.  I have a young friend (37 years old) and he is dependent on medication.  I know what happens if it's not available, he dies.  I am 65 and don't take any type medication.  I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, i watch my weight, I hike, I eat good food, no sugar, very little potatos and no white bread.

We still have time to try to get our bodies into shape and get off the prescription drugs.  There is a reason you're taking drugs, try to get into shape so you can manage without health care.  Because ther won't be any.  Don't worry about a respirator, there won't be any.

The grocery store will close and won't reopen.  The drug store will close and won't reopen.  The lights will go off and stay off.  Your furnace won't work because - no gas.  Water, there won't be any in the tap.

Some things you can control.  You can buy ($65) a water purifyer at the sports store and it works as a hand pump.  You'll at least have water safe to drink.  You should all have your crank radio, crank lights for night vision.  You should all be able to make a solar stove or at least have some sort of knowledge how to do it.  by now everyone on this site should have a shotgun and shells and know how to use it.  If you have to bug out, do you have a place to go.  You should have that planned.  Furthermore, don't plan on going any further then you can go with the gas in your car, there won't be any gas stqations open.  So if mother lives 300 miles away, you aren't going there.  Sure wish we would have developed solar cars.  When this starts, fill the tanks in your vehicles and park them for bug out vehicles, but only if you have a place to go to.

One thing for certain is the mental health of most of the population will go down the tube.  expect that.  During Katrina, there were people shooting at the helicoptors that were flying in with aid and for evacuation of the stranded people.  The gov had to send in snipers to take them out so the rescue could  continue.  expect the worse.
